The Population Reference Bureau estimates that in 2008 older persons comprise seven percent<strong>of</strong> the world‟s population. In Europe, the regional average proportion <strong>of</strong> older persons is 16percent and is highest in Monaco at 22% (6600 older persons). In Asia, Japan is estimated tohave 28 million older persons comprising 22 percent <strong>of</strong> the country‟s population. South Africa isestimated to have 1.9 million older persons. In other words, 86 percent <strong>of</strong> all older persons inSouthern African reside in South Africa.2.4 Ageing in South Africa2.4.1 Demographic TrendsSandra Marais and Ilse Eigelaar-Meets (2007) make reference to numerous studies conductedby Joubert and Bradshaw which provide a useful overview <strong>of</strong> the situation <strong>of</strong> older persons inSouth Africa. The authors indicate that South Africa has one <strong>of</strong> the most rapidly ageingpopulations in Africa, with a particular increase in the 64-70 year age category (May, 2003). Inthe year 2000 South Africa had the second highest number <strong>of</strong> older persons on the Africancontinent, being only surpassed by the older population <strong>of</strong> Nigeria (5.24 million).
