PREMIER: Market nervous over Cards and Lions2Michael FitzgeraldWith one week gone, we know little more thanwe did a week ago. Yes, Collegians did fire ahuge shot, but a Xaverians’ loss on Opening Dayis just as common as a September success. Onthe flip side, Old Scotch had a meritoriousvictory, but they regularly win their opening tilt, and perhaps drawing Uni Blues first-up was abonus. Well, so goes the conventional wisdom, but there may be a little more to theseimpressive wins.De La Salle President Martin Kelliher, Prince ofPessimists, was telling anyone who would listenlast week that his team was akin to that takenaway each week in wheelie bins by councilsanitation workers. Marty is the sort of blokewho doesn’t believe in keeping a lid on it whenyou can use a steel manhole cover instead. Still,as the rain (yes, rain) poured on the new lushWaverley Park to ring in the season, De La didindeed look a ghost of its 2009 self. OldMelburnians looked bouncy and betterprepared and quite capable of running awaywith it. However, if they’d watched the tapes, they would have realised that the Blue andGolds are true stayers of great pedigree. Thethird quarter saw them swan past the Men ofHarlech and in the last, they kept running tosecure a strong victory.North of the Eastern, Trinity accounted for theirneighbours Marcellin quite easily, but only afterthey had temporarily surrendered the lead. Themen in green held sway narrowly for most of theafternoon but took their time in sealing thedeal. First gamer Callum Pohl was lively, whilethe timeless Andrew Ramsden was both abeacon and a magnet up front for the Ts. TheBortolottos were in the best for the Eagles, aswas Jarrod Carlson, while his younger brotherTrent suffered a serious spleen injury in amarking contest. It was a must-win game forboth clubs, or so the pundits said, and not onlyfor the honour of holding up the Boags BulleenCup.Last time St Bede’s Mentone Tigers went toBrighton, they lowered their colours. They didbetter this time, despite a tremendous fight fromthe Tonners, who hung in hard each time thevisitors threatened to put them away. Converteddefenders Josh Dickerson and Nick Marstonkept the scoreboard ticking over for theCarmine Hose but Luke Terrell and Pat Keandid the same at the other end to keep thevisitors ahead. The brothers Tyquin, James andPatrick, were instrumental in getting the Tigershome in a tight one.A glance at Collegians contributors in their winat the Trott reveals a familiar cast of characters. In fact their depth ran much deeper than thosenamed, James Jorgensen proved a stumblingblock for the Red ‘n’ Blacks as he has been onmany previous occasions while wingster JackBull impressed the large crowd on debut withhis silky skills. Chris Smith slipped five throughthe sticks for the Xavs but the Lions defenceotherwise shut down a potent attack and thehome team grabbed the points going away.Old Scotch dominated early against Uni Bluesbut it was the Varsity who looked winners aslemon time drew near. There was no lack ofconfidence at the huddle with both teams sensinga win. It was Blues, however, who emerged tosnatch a two goal lead and had the seasonedTODAYSelections in BoldOLD XAVERIANS v OLD TRINITYOLD MELBURNIANS v COLLEGIANSST BEDES/MENTONE TIGERS v UNI BLUESOLD SCOTCH v DE LA SALLEMARCELLIN v OLD BRIGHTONTHE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010wondering if the spirits of Scotch seasons’ pasthad returned. Not so. The Cardinals shook offtheir short-lived malaise and finally grabbed thegame by the throat. Their new players stood upwhen it counted – Rob Ferraro, Rowan Nayna,Lachie Hill – and while the home team keptgoing, the Red Men did it better, sending a sternwarning to the rest of the competition that thingshave changed at Camberwell.Round 2 encounters should tell us more, butdon’t expect too much sieving for anothermonth yet. PREMIER C: All even, all up for grabsDi LangtonI might wear a skirt, but there’ll be none ‘a that -Maximus Decimus MeridiusWhile everything might look a littledifferent in Premier C (even the AmateurFootballer you’re holding) what’s reallychanged? The commitment, rivalry, passion, pain and glory are just the same. No moresleeps, the footy’s back! Let’s have analphabetical look at the contenders.AJAX - Last year: 6th.Coach: Bernie SheehyThe Jackas suffered a massive blow whencaptain Jason Ritterman (2008 C Grademedallist) suffered a broken leg at training, likely 10-12 weeks. Luke Jankie returns fromoverseas but is also nursing medial ligamentdamage while Adam Laitt has had aninterrupted pre-season after a surfing accident. On the flip side, a number of players returnfrom injury and various commitments, plus inthis non-Maccabi Games year there’ll be noexodus of players.BEAUMARIS - Last year: 4thCoach: Jason MifsudI’m hoping for a few tidbits from the stats vanthis year. Lots of usual movement and benefitto the Sharks from Sandringham (viz ThomasDean), as well as Quirk (Tas) and Edmonds(Old Brighton). Mifsud has a deep young listcoming through and will expect to figurelargely in September.CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS - Last year: 3rd.Coach: Steven LawrenceGutted with their straight sets failure afterfinishing minor premiers (yes, understatement)Caulfield has flexed its significant might in afresh bid to catapult back up the sections. Nonotable departures, major recruits includeJustin Perkins (Port Adelaide Magpies), BrettSinclair (Old Brighton) and Dean Scheetz (OldScotch), while Nick Fallu returns to the foldfrom the Northern Bullants. Ben Hyland andGavin Winter are back from overseas.FITZROY - Last year: 2nd (Div 1)Coach: Simon TaylorTaylor’s Roys gathered huge momentum in2009 but maintaining it will be tricky givensignificant losses at BSO over the summer, including the injured Biggs (op) andKelleher (hip) while retirement will see offexperienced campaigners Sneddon, Daffand James Taylor. Distant shores beckon forClarke and Cahill and the departure ofMeighen and Hughson will be sorely felt, but a talented crop coming throughincludes 2009 debutantes Polidoras,Dimond and Best First Year player, RossBorland, who together with B&F winnerDullard will give opposition defenders aserious headache.MAZENOD - Last year: 5th.Coach: Dave MurrayMajor loss for the Nodders over the breakwas Michael Johnson (Casey Scorpions), butthe ledger balanced with VFL pickup ReesThomas (Port Melbourne), joined by someTODAYSelections in BoldCAULFIELD GRAM v OLD CAMBERWELLOLD GEELONG v FITZROYPARKDALE VULTURES v RUPERTSWOODAJAX v ORMONDBEAUMARIS v MAZENODEFL talent in brothers Lachlan and TravisAllen (Scoresby) and Jake Beard returnsfrom Mulgrave. TheWellsmen bid farewell to Chubbs Hendrie(EFL) as well as their retiring ex-AFL players. The critical glue to bond this new-look sidewill be the 8 or more senior playersremaining from their 2007 premiership.OLD GEELONG - Last year: 8th.Coach: Nick MitchellStayed two games clear of relegation butrequire a better effort to consolidate.Omissions include 2009 Most Consistent,Charlie Fairbairn, (work commitments) andretiring former B&F winner, MattGolsdworthy. However a few familiar nameshave popped up at the Oggery, hotbed offather/son combos. Look for Jack O’Shea(son of Nigel); Sandy Nevile (Richard);Charlie Swan (Peter); and AngusCarmichael (Iain, who played a season in1976 when the property market was a littleslower). Notable SFL recruits include Lloyd(South Yarra) and McEvoy (Caulfield Bears).ORMOND - Last year: 9th (B).Coach: Michael OatenWith the assistance of new conditioningcoach, Ryan Eastgate new coach Oatendevised an intense pre-season fitness regime;an area the Monders hope to significantlyimprove. Did GeoffReilly broker that deal?PARKDALE - Last year: 7th.Coach: Dave MatthewsMatthew Boland, winner of the club 2009B&F and goalkicking awards has left theVultures for Sandringham, while AFLdrafteeRohan Kerr (whose earlydevelopment was given a nudge by outgoingSpider Kennedy), has a new home atCarlton. Dave Matthews is the newlyappointed coach of the Vultures and we waitto see what gems he too may uncover. ThankGod for the Sullivans.RUPERTSWOOD - Last year: Premiers (Div 1).Coach: Gavin KerrThe young Rupo running machine hasfaltered slightly over the summer with anumber of exits to the Ballarat and Riddellleagues, as well as impressive youngsterDylan Murphy to the Calder Cannonsfollowing a stellar 2009. But the fresh air inSunbury seems to churn out a never-endingstream of footballing doppelganger. DIVISION 1: ALL IN THE STALLS AND SET TO TRAVELRees QuilfordSeason 2010 rolls around and for the firsttime in recent memory it actually feels likeit’s time for footy. The grounds are lookinglush and have a bit of give. With its spiffynew title, Division 1 is more appealingthan ever. In many ways the week leadingup to Round 1 is the best time of year. With the memories of pre-season sweat, sunburn and spew firmly repressed, all thatremains is excitement and anticipation. For all ten clubs the slate is clean andanything is possible. Come 2pm Saturdayafternoon, the autumn sun will shine onthat cherry red Sherrin. Once the sirensounds the reality of the season proper willburst through with the brutality of a ByronPickett shirtfront. The off season has been a busy one for ourten combatants so here is a rundown onwhere the clubs stand at the cusp of theseason:Aquinas Old Collegians: Looking to improveon a disappointing 2009 season where theynarrowly avoided relegation. Senior coachBrett Davidson says the pre-season has beentremendous. They have definitely beenaggressive in the recruitment sakes, adding anumber of seasoned players including AndyCultrera and Scott Krakouer from OldTrinity as well as goal-kicker Marcus Tooveyfrom Old Ivanhoe. These players are sure toprovide greater support to the “outstandingyoung talent” coming up from the juniorranks. According to Davidson the Bloods aimto be more consistent in 2010 in the hope ofsecuring a finals berth.Bulleen Templestowe: Back to Division 1after a brief sojourn up to C Section after aseason that yielded just three wins and adraw. The Bullants will be looking tocapitalise on the return to what has been asuccessful hunting ground in recent times.Incoming Senior Coach Harry Harisiouwill be aiming to steer the team back intothe form that delivered a D1 premiershipin 2008.Monash Blues: The ‘Ashes also come backto Division 1 after a disappointing 2009.The scholars from Claytona will be lookingto Senior Coach Tim Powell to quicklyreverse the clubs on-field fortunes. Powell, who coached the Club to a D1 flag in2003, returns to the fold after a workinduced sabbatical. The off-season signshave been promising. Despite the allure ofcheeky pots at the Nott, numbers havebeen strong throughout a torturous preseasonin which the Chapman brothers,Shane and Michael were standoutperformers.North Old Boys/St Patricks College: A 9and 9 win-loss ratio left NOBSP ostracizedfrom the 2009 finals campaign in fifthposition. This ‘so close I can taste it’ typeof voyeurism is sure to have been amotivator over the pre-season. Returning Senior Coach AndrewHayes will be looking to translate thatmiddle of the road finish into a finalsberth in 2010.Peninsula Old Boys: The Pirates from MtEliza bring their marauding ways up toDivision 1 in 2010. The Pirates enjoyed astellar 2009 where they were the bestperformed D2 team throughout most ofthe year. Unfortunately they were unableto sustain their barnstorming run andfaltered at finish line going down by 27points to Williamstown in the D2 GrandFinal. Returning Senior Coach MarkGlenn and his charges don’t have to waittoo long for their chance for revenge withthe round three clash against the CYsshaping as a classic.South Melbourne Districts: The Bloodsdidn’t come on as they would have liked in2009. After seven wins in 2008, the 2009season yielded just five. Senior CoachGerard Jess remains at the helm and willbe looking to steer them back toward finalscontention. Like all Albert Park residentsthey have had to work around the GrandPrix but reports have Ash Nunn, JoeHocking and Jack Cronan smoking thetrack like a Lewis Hamilton burn-out.Werribee: The Tigers will be looking tobuild on a very successful 2009 season thatdelivered a preliminary final berth. Theoff-season has witnessed some majorstructural changes at a junior level that willallow smoother transition for players intothe senior ranks. The senior group remainslargely unchanged but is coming off a bigpre-season. Andrew "Rocca" Taylor hasimpressed on track with his off seasoncommitment to gain an extra yard. SeniorCoach Kirk Norton and the boys from thewest will be eying off promotion.Whitefriars Old Collegians: The Friarswill be looking to once again bookthemselves a place amongst the finalsaction. Returning Senior Coach GregFeutrill will be super keen to see his sideatone for a disappointing performance inthe 2009 first semi. Their pre-season formas been solid with a trip to Adelaide for theannual Friars Cup returning a convincingwin and five goals for John Daou.Williamstown CYMS: The CYs are aclub well and truly on the up. Senior andreserve premierships in successive yearshave delivered Willy to Division 1 with abullet. Club chairman Peter Welshrecently pointed to a “young and verytalented playing list that has developed a‘winning habit’ and which is hungry forfurther challenge”. Pre-season flyersinclude on-baller/forward Ben Gray, former University Blacks leading goalkicker Josh Vanderloo as well as CraigTaylor and James Wong. DIVISION 2: OPEN SEASON OPENSJames CoyneThe 20-X VAFA season is here and we greetsome familiar faces in Div 2 football. Div 3Premiers, Bentleigh ascend with St Mary’sSalesian, but we also welcome Prahran andEmmaus St Leo’s down from Div 1. The ManCity of the north, Banyule, was busy over thesummer recruiting over 25 players to theirstrong list. Despite the bears losing players toNorth Brunswick they are one of the strongestif not the strongest this season. Bentleigh’s oneyear coaching hoodoo was broken over the offseasonwith premiership coach Lex Munrostaying on as senior coach for 2010. The Dees, despite losing Theodore Aiken to the slopes ofCanada, have gained club legend Scotty Sice.Old Paradians showed plenty in their recentpractice matches and are another side boastinglarge numbers. There is much talk about thesecond coming of the great one David Boundy.Hopefully the centre of the ground is givenback to Plenty Road soon.Eltham’s confidence will be high after a solidpreseason. Their new coach, Kevin Brinkley, appears to have worked them hard over thebreak, but as we all know, preseason formcounts for nothing. We be a big ask to crackthe top four but anything is possible with theseTurtles. Emmaus St Leos ultimately paid theprice for winning just three games in 2009. Butthe Animals will certainly be more at home inDiv 2. I don’t expect them to drop downanother section. With the drop between thetwo divvies being what it is, don’t be surprisedif they get themselves up for a big year If theymanage to keep their list. Therry Penola wouldhave started the season with sharingfavouritism with the bears. The loss of CoreyBannister will hurt, and they will desperatelyneed someone to step up to replace him orthey will face an unfulfilled year. Expect sparksespecially against Bentleigh and OP. Their 12wins was a great effort last season and they willhope for glory in 2010.Werribee’s noisy neighbours, Old Westbourneare primed for a big year. Injuries and a poorstart to the year really hurt the Warriors and afinal four position is the target. Westbournebarring injuries, will make the finals. Theirhome ground advantage is a hard place totravel to, physically and on the pocket. Upthere with the best canteen too! (Hot JamDonuts, inspired!) St Mary Salesian Saints willbe looking to redemption following thedisappointment of last year. With FerndalePark getting a makeover, the Saints will have anew environment to attack 2010. Best andFairest Marc Hill and Co, must continue their’09 form if they are any chance to claim a latefinal spot.Prahran only managed to win five games in’09, and will obviously like to improve on thatrecord this season. Former premiership player,Serge D’Angelo, has been appointed as seniorcoach of the Two Blues. Daniel Falcone,Damien Stewart and Adam Sleigh will be thebarometers this season and if fit Prahran cango either way this season. While they had adisappointing season in D1; a completeturnaround is not out of the question. Like all things, time will tell.Expect the unexpected come round one assides look to settle on line-ups to kick off 2010.I think this season’s division will be hotlycontest one filled with plenty of upsets. TheWarriors will win to open their account overthe Saints by 26 points. Bentleigh will hope beclose to full strength for their round one clashand will take the honours over the mysterymen from Prahran; Bentleigh by 18 points. The Turtles will emerge from the underpassand knock off the Raiders. The match up ofEmmaus St Leos and St Mary’s will providemore questions than answers as the relegatedand promoted clash. Honestly can’t pick awinner so ill choose the home team by 15points. This leaves us with match of the day!Banyule play host to Therry Penola and whileI feel the return bout will be far moreinteresting and entertaining, the Bears will winby 40 points, as TP looks to fill a void.Lastly I have really tried to avoid writing teamsoff before the season starts, as this does nogood to anyone. DIVISION 3: ‘HOUSE A POWER BUT WATCH FOR OTHERS12Jonathan HibbertIt seems a severe case of foot-in-mouth disease forthe Division 3 review panel. I take no responsibilityfor the content last week. It was a private memosent out by my media advisor. It will placate allreaders to know she has been promptly fired. Thissaid, it might be a good idea to take my tips with agrain of salt until about Round 6, when a patternmight emerge. In a contest of will and cohesiveness, the Combinetrumped the fancied Yarra Valley by ten points atDomeney. The game was characterised by goodsportsmanship and intense passages of play. TheVultures blooded ten players including excitinghalf-back Pat St John, while captain LucasGorringe’s efforts on the ball saw his men lead by26 points at three-quarter time. With Amosperforming consistently in the ruck, and GregCoutts inspiring the Bushrangers, Yarra Valleyrallied in the final term, booting 4.7, but theVultures absconded with the points and a healthyattitude for round two, while Yarra start theirrenaissance with a very young list.Meanwhile, at the home of football, ElsternwickPark, guns were blazing in a duel between keyforwards. The Wickers’ Justin Hunter bagged eightand St John’s Chris Peake nine. St John’s tossedmany young players into the cauldron that is seniorfootball and they proved their worth. After pushingto a six-goal lead at half time and forging to a final53 point margin, the JOCs were never threatened, with Hanger racking up possessions and Arnoldcontributing a handy three goals. On the road at Ivanhoe Park has never been abreeze. Every man and his dog had written offAlbert Park. In a stunning upset, and coming frombehind at three quarter time, the Falcons led by aninspirational Nathan Dallas scraped home by 9points. This was impressive given Albert Park havenot trained on their own ground in over a month, and have been generously assisted by Power Houseand Elwood in this matter. Captain StuartMaunder, playing on the ball, was flying with threegoals. It will comfort Ivanhoe to have Angelo Paceback. After a year in the wilderness, the chosen onehath returned, and was near unstoppable with eightgoals; and with 15 new players in the senior side,he’ll have a team to work with. The Magpies were well and truly mauled, by thebetter drilled and higher-flying Hawks. It seemsMurray’s boys made it back from Swan Hill withno problems, with an emphatic victory, ten newplayers, and a long list of goal kickers with Booth,Kilgower and Tremowen all scoring. Having onlykicked two goals at the final break, and with adepleted list thanks to transfers, there really weren’ttoo many obvious positives for West Brunswick, except Robert Henham trying in vain to urge onthe black and white.La Trobe thrashed Kew. A76 point win on the roadmust be encouraging for the Students, who arelooking to cement a good spot under DeanSheldrick. At Victoria Park, the game seemed tightuntil half time, but a flurry of Uni goals in the thirdbeat the Bears into submission. Stuart Pattenmarshalled his team with nine goals whileMatheson and Ross fought all day to pull a tiringKew back. The biggest news was the Power House demolitionof St Francis Xavier at e Lakeside. DIVISION 4: AN ARRESTING OPENING14Jim SuttonIt was an exciting first round with three matchesnot decided until late in the final quarter. Allbodes well for a tightly contested season ahead. The most dramatic finish was at Mt Martha, where Manningham Cobras overcame a five goalhalf time deficit to pip South Mornington at thepost by the narrowest of margins. In a highscoring last quarter the Cobras grabbed the leadmid-term, only for South to snatch it back in thelast minute. Trent Stonehouse was the hero forManningham as he took a mark in the dyingseconds, and kicked truly from 35 metres afterthe siren to secure a famous victory. The Cobraswere pleased with Warrick DeVercelli’s clearancework, while brothers (I’m guessing) Michael andBrent Heib got the nod for the Tigers, the formerbooting seven.A game of fluctuating fortunes at Point Cook asthe VAFA new boys opened brightly with the firstfour goals, before Richmond Central bouncedback with the next eight to give them somebreathing space at the half. The Cookies cameagain and scores were level early in the last, beforethe experienced Snakes steadied with the finalthree goals to take the points. Dan Pike, LukeJamieson and Sean O’Connor showed greatleadership for the Snakes to quell the earlyonslaught, while big Aaron Marsh proved ahandful up forward with six goals for Point Cook.Another tight encounter was at Allard Parkwhere the better conversion of MonashGryphons got them over the line against NorthBrunswick. Five third quarter goals gave Monasha handy lead at the last break, but North weren’tfinished and got within a goal before theGryphons were able to seal it in the last tenminutes. Despite being forced forward with anearly injury, Adam Jeffrey proved a thorn in theGryphons’ side with five goals, while OscarBaring in defence and Robert Santacroce on thewing also played top games for North. DanBaxter was outstanding at half back for theGryphons, who were also pleased with theperformance of a couple of youngsters in JeremyCrow and Nick Booth. At Jordan Reserve, Chadstone and Mt Lilydalegot an early test of their wet weather skills as arainy first quarter turned the early stages of thematch into a slippery affair. As conditionsimproved the Rams were able to kick away in thesecond half, with Joel Black, two-time B & Fwinner Tom Wall, and new recruit Jim Baughanin the ruck among their best. With many newplayers in the senior side Chadstone willcontinue to improve, Trent Rapp and SeanSceney among the newcomers to impress inround one.Swinburne Uni dominated the first and lastquarters as they posted a convincing 53 pointvictory over Eley Park. Six goals to zip in the firstquarter shocked the Sharks into action, and themiddle two quarters were an even contest, beforethe fitness and creative handball of theRazorbacks again took over. Darcy Higgins’attack on the ball was a highlight for theRazorbacks, who also had great games fromMitch Hodgson and Roy Hurst (seven goals).Eley Park named Blake Sahlstrom and JustinNelson as their best. This week: No time to linger on thedisappointment of last week’s heartbreaking lossas South Mornington travel to East CaulfieldTODAYSelections in BoldMONASH GRYPHONS v SOUTH MORNINGTONBOX HILL NORTH v ELEY PARKSWINBURNE UNI v POINT COOKMT LILYDALE v NORTH BRUNSWICKRICHMOND CENTRAL v CHADSTONEMANNINGHAM COBRAS - BYETHE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010Reserve to take on Monash Gryphons. RESERVESTHIRDSReserve Grade Footy - the place where“LEGENDS” are made.So Round 1 has come and gone in Premier,Premier B, Division 3, and Division 4, andit takes a bit of getting used to those newmonikers. Some interesting results: plentyof high scores, a couple of close games andmany great individual performances werethe highlights.By gee, the depth of talent must be strong atOld Xavs with Marcus Allan, former BrisbaneLions player, and son of new West SydneyFooty Manager Graeme Allan, making hisdebut in the Ressies. Also seen in an Old Xavsjumper in the Magoos was last year’s U23State Rep Nick Dimattina, who has spent theoff-season on a cultural exchange program inMexico, apparently learning the language andcustoms of the Aztecs and probably scoutingnew restaurant locations. Some incredible talent took to the field in theearly game at McKinnon with seasonedplayers of the ilk of Bryce Shaw, DavidRobbins, Mark Seccull, Matthew Brewer, andBrett Carson all running around. Someexcellent ex-VFL talent there, and a formerVAFA State Captain. Yes, but how well canthey play in the Ressies, alongside the grisledveterans who long ago learned that skill isonly part of the picture in the Magoos. Also in that game, one of the umpires, RobinMunting, a major sponsor of St Bede’sMentone Tigers made a return to whistleblowing for the first time in some 30 years.Robin who lost an incredible 28 kegs over thesummer months, enjoyed the experience andis looking for some more games. Benny, please note!North Brunswick opened their new clubroomsand celebrated in style with the closest result18Tom Brainof the day a 1 point win over MonashGryphons. Evergreen Ang Sammartino, nowinto his 40s, continues to pull on a Green andGold Jumper with style. Cameron Twaddleand Donny Manonkian both with 4 twins werefine focal points.Things must be looking good at HamptonRovers and Elsternwick where previous regularsenior players Stuart Burgraaf, Gerard Woods,Danny Byrne, Shane Mahony and Mark Thieleall kicking off the dew. The Wicks had a win, while the Rovers found the travel just a bit farand could not get over the line. Some great individual performances at thegoalfront with Paul Tsoucalas from Oakleighthe best with eight. “Dangerous Dan” Rushfrom Old Xavs bagged a lazy seven and mustsurely warrant a sleep-in on a Saturdaymorning soon. The man in possibly the bestjumper in the VAFA, Swinburne Uni’sThomas Kennedy also slotted seven. PatHarris, Ross Slater, Danny Byrne, Scott Myersand the big fiery Mat Terech all had Michellesas did former Premier C scribe Johnny Aitkenfor MHSOB.And so to Round 2 with everyone on thepark there should be plenty to write aboutnext week. Please email any Match Highlights, outstanding performances, milestones etc tobrainco@optusnet.com.au, by 8pm MondayNights, or feel free to give me a call on theMobile 0423 433 488.VOLUNTEER OF THE WEEKNominate your club’s great volunteers and tune in88.3FM (streaming live at www.southernfm.com.auon Sundays at 9:15am to hear the weekly winnerinterviewed.) The matchof the round wasn’t the close contest predicted, with Xavs creating an 8 goal buffer by 3/4 timeand merely going through the motions in the last.Rory Lynch stood tall with 3 majors, supportedby the damaging Mark Trovato. De La providedthe first upset of the season, storming home overOMs, who did nothing to quash speculation of apremiership hangover. In a result as predictable asdeath and taxes, Uni Blues demolished anundermanned Old Scotch, despite an exceptionalperformance from Al Harkness across half-back.PREMIER THIRDSRichard HummerstonOLD XAVERIANS 3.3 6.8 10.1 10.15 (75)COLLEGIANS 1.2 2.5 3.6 4.6 (30)GOALS: OLD XAVERIANS: R. FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAMEAt exactly 7.30pm on 11 April, Ivanhoe AmateurFootball Club turned 100 years old.Congratulations on that, but did the telegramarrive from ER II?The previous day, the VAFA’s newest clubPoint Cook had its first day out. Asmemorable an occasion as it was, thepremiership points were taken back across thebridge by Richmond Central. Those venturing to North Brunswick’s AllardPark in the past were greeted with an old tin shedchange room, which converted to a social roomafter the match. Last Saturday, President SofTsialtis proudly opened the new facilities thatinclude two change rooms and a separate socialclub. The rooms were named after club legendDino Dimarco who was taken aback by theannouncement. Whilst the result didn’t go theirway it was obvious to all that the club was on theway up and big things can be expected this year.Last season the VAFA entered an arrangementwith the Collingwood FC where the winner,Christian Stagliano, formerly of Banyule andnow at North Brunswick, attended a week at theclub attending all practice sessions and meetings.Christian must have impressed the coaching staffas he has been appointed as the forward scoutfor their VFL team. Well done to Christian andwe look forward to continuing our relationshipwith Collingwood. For the first time in VAFA history clubs, competed against each other at 4 different levels– seniors, reserves, thirds and U19s. The Pavvy atUni was heaving with players from the 8competing teams assembled for the after-match.Uni are particularly fortunate to have twogrounds and all teams competing in the samelocale. The other clubs were De La Salle and OldMelburnians who competed in all four grades. For the record Uni Blues won 2-1 with the Under19’s having a tie and De La defeating OM’s 3-1.Winning Edge is the proud sponsor of the newVAFA Club Championship. Four points will beallocated to the seniors, three to the U19s, two tothe ressies and one to the Thirds/Club XVIII.After last week’s results nobody got the perfect 10but De La Salle head the table with 8 pointsfollowed by St Kevin’s on 7. See how your club isfaring at the back of this publication. Thewinning club will receive a $500 gift voucher fromWinning Edge. For all your clubs trophies, trophies and gifts contact the team at WinningEdge on 9660 9211.The VAFA announced their list of ambassadorswho will be assisting the board in going aroundthe grounds to liaise with clubs each Saturday. The Ambassadors are Lachlan Beaton, NickBourke, Frank Dunell, Richard Evans, PeterHannan, Tony Gilchrist, Michael Lentini, MickOverman, Geoff Reilley, Phil Stevens, Rick Sykesand Norm Walsh. Each of these gentlemen hasbeen assigned six clubs to visit throughout theyear. When you see them, feel free to invokeprotocol and address each as “Excellency” whenasking them to buy a round after the game!Milestones GaloreIvanhoe’s very popular Reserves coach RossToogood played his 200 last Saturday. Ross is a“stand out” personality at Ivanhoe. His loyal andfriendly demeanour has made him a delightfulclub member off-field and his contribution onfieldhas been significant. A wonderful win lastSaturday by his team was a great way to celebrate- Last week, one of Yarra Valley's greatest clubmen,Tim Hale, former President, former Treasurer,2002 Reserves Premiership player, leadingReserves goalkicker in 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008and 2009 (215 career sausages) celebrated his 200games. - Greg Coutts this week pulls on the YarraValley jumper for the 150th time. Greg has beena Bushranger since 1999 when he played his firstgame in the U19s. Since then he has built areputation as one of the clubs most reliable backmen, often taking on forwards taller, yet nevermore determined than himself. His highesthonour no doubt came when awarded thecaptaincy of the senior side last year, hisemotionally charged half time address will beforgotten by few. - Monash Gryphons’ ‘gunmidfielder’, Nick Rutherford brings up 150 gamesthis weekend against South Mornington. Nick, last year’s senior Best & Fairest Winner, has notonly been an excellent contributor for the Gryphsover the years, but also played nearly 100 seniorgames for Albert Park FC before transferring in2001. A hard worker on the track (ask him toshow you his biceps!!), Nick has recently started afamily and runs his own successful DJ business -Elsternwick’s Eugene Alter, Kim ‘Shirty’Cummins and David ‘Cuddles’ Grace all playedtheir 100th games in the first round against StJohns. Alter, a crumbing, goal sneak forward, joined the club in 2002 and finally reached thismilestone in the reserves. Grace has played in theshadow of his brother Scott but has developedinto a more than handy half forward/winger.Cummins joined the club in 2004 along withDavid when they transferred from Monash BluesUnder 19’s when David’s father Denis wasappointed coach. Kim is currently Vice Captainand is renowned for his attack on the ball whetherplaying back, forward or on the ball. - OldBrighton Grammarians’ gallant co-captain, JonPerrett, plays his 100 against Marcellin this week,a further milestone in a career that has beenhighlighted by courageous and determinedfootball every week. Jon won the Tonners’ B&Fin 2003, his debut year, and again in 2008. Heworks tirelessly, encouraging team-mates toimprove their footy at every opportunity, and he isat the heart of everything happening at the Beach.Pezza is one of OB’s most respected players andhe is gradually blanketing the ample shadow castby father Ross, who still believes his boy has a bitto do! - On the other side, Marcellin’s JonathanBortolotto hits 100 this weekend v Old Brighton.Captain of the 2005 U19 Premier Divisionpremiership side and a key member of the 2008 Bsection premiership success, ‘JB’ is a highly skilledand courageous player and has developed into aversatile and important member of the Eaglessenior line up. - 100 up for Oakleigh’s JasonReynolds today against St Bernards. Jasondebuted against Peninsula in 2005. Jason is a2004, 2006, 2007 premiership player and won theclub’s 2006 Senior Most Couragerous. - TheKrushers’ Tom Ristevski also hits 100 club gametoday. Recruited from Oakleigh YCFC, Tomdebuted in the U19s in 2005. - Still at Oakleigh,it’s 50 up for Stephen Doherty and over atBentleigh, it’s 50 for Bobby Bennet.VALE STEPHEN LEITCHIt is with great sadness that the OldWestbourne Amateur Football club advisethat Stephen Leitch lost his battle with cancerthis week.Steve was their inaugural VAFA premiershipcoach (Reserves – 2004), former player and aman who touched the hearts and minds of allthe people that had the pleasure of meetinghim. He was more than a leader and morethan a friend, he gave his all for the love of histeammates, the Club and the game that wereall such a big part of his life. The VAFA and Old Westbourne’s committee, players, members and supporters pass onsincere and heartfelt condolences to Steve’sfamily and close friends at this difficult time.44THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010 45

CLUB 1846Norm NugentAnother season brings hope to allcompeting sides, including newcomers StBernard’s, University Blacks and De LaSalle. Old Paradians are back for the firsttime since 1994 while UHS-VU andRichmond Central are making theirdebut in Club XVIII. Here’s a look attoday’s games:Section 1: Old Melburnians should openwith a win over Old Camberwell. It isdifficult to assess these sides because theOMs carried all before them in the South in2009 whereas Old Camberwell endured aseason of fluctuating fortune.University Blacks and St Bernard’s meet onthe Crawford Oval. Without any confidenceI select the Snow Dogs based on universityteams often being slow starters due to theirannual turnover.Traditional rivals Prahran and OldXaverians meet on Darling Park. I select OldXaverians, who have always been the teamto beat to attain Club XVIII honours.Monash Blues, who have been a settledside for several seasons, are at home toDe La Salle. The game could prove to bea tussle between experience andyouthful exuberance and at home Iselect Monash Blues.North: Old Essendon will start favourites todefeat the Old Paradian side, who will taketime to adjust. Conditions at Old Essendonwill certainly be to the home side’sadvantage so I select them to win over the“Bundoora Boys”Williamstown C.Y.M.S. face North OldBoys/ St Patrick’s at the Fear on Reserve, where prevailing winds are a great advantageto “C.Y.” teams. Today I select them to beatthe visitors, many of whom will be playingtogether for the first time.Whitefriars face the first of many westwardtrips, when they visit Therry Penola, wheregeography and climatic conditions havetraditionally not been friendly to visitors.Lack of size has troubled Therry Penola forsome seasons and unless they have recruitedwell, it is hard to see success coming theirway in 2010. With no great confidence, Iselect Whitefriars.Old Carey, according to my sources, havelost many players and face a battle todayagainst Fitzroy. Ramsden Street Reserve willbe new territory to many Carey players andwith the strong Fitzroy following, shouldresult in a home victory.Old Westbourne welcome UHS-VU to ClubXVIII. The visitors will find westernconditions different from Royal Park andtheir lack of developed teamwork shouldenable Old Westbourne to win.South: Mazenod welcome CaulfieldGrammarians to Central Reserve. WhilstCaulfield played in the finals in 2009 in thissection, Mazenod have come from Section2, where they enjoyed only moderatesuccess. When in doubt, stick to the triedand true formula by selecting the home side,Mazenod!St Mary’s Salesian welcome HamptonRovers. As neither side enjoyed muchsuccess in 2009, the influx of new blood willbe the determining factor. Based on newsfrom Roverland and with the good formshown by their Premier B team, I amconfident the Rovers will be fitter and tootalented.THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010In the twenty-first century sequel to Caesarcrossing the Rubicon and Washingtoncrossing the Potomac, many Old Scotchplayers have “gone west” and joinedRichmond Central, whose colours havenever graced a Club XVIII arena. In 2009,Kew finished eighth place (of twelve)whereas many of their opponents today werefinalists in the Southern Section. On thefamiliar Victoria Park soil, I selectRichmond Central to win the game.Get Well Danny: Popular umpire andformer Eley Park player Danny Carroll hasbeen hospitalised of late with a seriousillness. Danny is recovering well and afterhis recuperation, his friends hope to seehim back on the field. Zac HubberDarren DawsonRichard WilkinsonU19 PREMIERU19 Premier: Put to the swordFour ten-goal-margins and a draw; a unique way toopen proceedings in Round One. The two grandfinalists flexed their muscle and sent an ominouswarning to the competition, as did newcomers OldCamberwell, who pummelled St Bedes/Mentone by71 points. Sam Killworth continued his grand finalform of seven goals by kicking five against theinaccurate Tigers. The ambulance that arrived atday’s end could have been attributed to the work ofRob Penn-Tonkin and Alex Lattuada, who causedheadaches for new coach Des Ryan.Beaumaris and Marcellin were always hard to split, but no one predicted the 142-point shellackingdished out by the Sharks. Beauy kicked 16 goals intwo quarters of football and will be out to show thatit was no fluke against the Xavs this weekend. Theyhad seven multiple goal-kickers with Nick Dickinsonleading the pack with seven. Old Melburnians had adifficult round one encounter with De La Salle in itsfirst hit-out in Premier. The game was over by halftime, but the OMs held their own in the second half.2009 finalists Old Scotch and Uni Blues shared thepoints at Crawford Oval. Trailing by 19 points at thefinal break, the Students came back courageously butjust couldn’t get all four points on offer. Maxim Allenand Llewyn Butler kicked nine majors between themfor the Blues. Butler was the hero after he marked inthe dying minutes of the match from a Scotch kick-inand ensured the draw. Angus Nice was best afield forUni while Max Davis starred for the Cardinals.Old Xavs returned to Stradbroke Park afterhaving nowhere to call home last year, anddominated all four quarters against Uni Blacks.New arrival Hicham Nidam was devastating withhis left boot, as was Tristan Parker, while WillMolony and Ed Maas were too strong in defence.Jack McDonald was a standout for the Blacks, sweeping through packs and penetrating theforward 50 on many occasions.THE NORTH: Intrigue aboundsThe Under 19 North sections will provide plenty ofintrigue in 2010, and it will probably be a number ofrounds before a clear pattern emerges and we canbegin to determine where the season is heading. Byits very nature, results in Under 19s can fluctuatewildly depending on injury, availability and, ofcourse, how well a club’s senior team is travelling. And a big question will always be: can last year’slower age players step up a level? The off-season has seen some minor changes to themake-up of the two North divisions: best of luck toOld Camberwell who move up to Premier, andwelcome to Old Trinity (down from Premier) andnewcomers Werribee and Old Ivanhoe. In North 1, expectations will be high at OldEssendon following their grand final appearance in2009, whilst finalists Fitzroy and Old Carey shouldalso be in the mix. I am expecting St. Bernard’s tobe competitive given last year’s Under 18 team weresemi-finalists, whist the Sharks will be looking toimprove on last year’s performance. As in North 1, ’09 runners-up Therry-Penola shouldbe thereabouts again in North 2, with Ivanhoe andOld Westbourne the other early favourites. Onewould think that Bulleen-Templestowe will also becompetitive having dropped back from North 1.The beauty of pre-season is that every team is on alevel footing right up until the first siren sounds forRound 1. Every player, coach, and official will beenthusiastically awaiting that first bounce. Good luckto all for the season ahead, particularly those playingin the VAFA for the first time.THE SOUTHThe long pre-season was longest for Old Brighton, who narrowly missed promotion to PremierDivision. With new coaching structures they willlook to be a force in 2010. After dominating South2 last year with only a couple of losses, Old Geelongwill find the jump is a massive leap, especially withmany of their strong premiership players gone. DeLa’s second under 19 side cannot be taken lightly, asthe depth that pours into the club each year producestwo extremely competitive teams. They may be evenstronger than last year. Hampton Rovers, a massiveclub which stretches all the way down to Under 9shave had a huge injection of U18s ready to stepup.Ajax kick their season off with confidence, butmeet the team to beat - St Kevin’s. Having won theAPS football premiership last year, the word is thatSkevs are ready to make an assault on this flag.Collegians always seem to just plod along and will belooking to start well against a strong CaulfieldGrammarians. Both teams should be overflowingwith talent from their school sides. I applaud thekeen Old Mentonians who feel they will be bettersuited to South 1 than South 2. They believe theycan figure late into the year. Old Haileybury will bewishing them no luck in their endeavours as theymeet on Saturday. Ormond, who have the bye, againhave another big list to choose from and shouldreach September. The South 2 competition kicks of this weekend witha smaller tighter group of eight teams, all hoping tostart the climb through the Under 19 sections. BothOld Xaverians and Beaumaris field a second team inthis division, which should see them produce somegood football from the players fighting to play intheir sides number one team. Mazenod who playBeaumaris in the opening round will be looking toget their group of U19s back on track. Monash Bluesand the Parkdale Vultures clash in what should be avery close contest. Monash each year threaten to playgood football which could see them in South 1however maintaining numbers throughout the yearseems to be a challenge for the Blues. Peninsula willtravel to the home of the VAFA to play prime timefooty on Saturday against Old Xavs, the wide openspaces should suit Peninsula in what I’m tipping tobe a low scoring affair. Oakleigh are favourites toelevate themselves into South 1, with a strong groupof U18s that performed well last year. AgainstOakleigh are the Melbourne High Old Boys, the clubhaving moved its senior side into Premier B, will belooking at their youth to maintain the success, a winagainst Oakleigh will further enhance the generalfeeling that MHSOB are a club moving forward.TODAYSelections in BoldU19 PREMIERDE LA SALLE v OLD SCOTCHOLD MELBURNIANS v OLD CAMBERWELLOLD XAVERIANS v BEAUMARISST BEDES / MENTONE TIGERS v UNI BLUESBrindisi St Oval (9.30am)UNI BLACKS v MARCELLINU19 SOUTH 1AJAX v ST KEVINSLindsay Hassett Oval (1.00pm)ORMOND - BYEOLD BRIGHTON v OLD GEELONGOLD HAILEYBURY v OLD MENTONIANSHAMPTON ROVERS v DE LA SALLEBoss James Reserve (9.30am)COLLEGIANS v CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANSU19 SOUTH 2MONASH BLUES v PARKDALE VULTURESMAZENOD v BEAUMARISOAKLEIGH v MHSOBOLD XAVERIANS v PENINSULASportscover Arena (2.00pm)U19 NORTH 1FITZROY v OLD TRINITYOLD IVANHOE v WERRIBEEOLD CAREY v ST BERNARDSOLD ESSENDON v MANNINGHAM SHARKSU19 NORTH 2THERRY PENOLA v IVANHOEBULLEEN TEMPLESTOWE v LA TROBE UNIFITZROY v EMMAUS ST LEOSW.T. UMPIRESUNDER 18Here we go again! (continued)Even though Premier, Premier B, Divisions 3 & 4 gotunder way last weekend, we see the rest of the VAFAkick off today. All the very best to the players andumpires as they get into “the real stuff”.Practice MatchesOne umpire who’ll be glad to see the end of practicematches will be Jamie Gunn. Gunny has been aregular in Club 18s whilst filling in for other sectionsusually umpiring double-headers most weeks for thelast few years. Surely he must have set a record thispre-season considering he umpired 7 matches inabout a 14 day period. Whew! We look forward tocelebrating a big milestone with him in a month orso when he becomes “Two-ton Gunn”.There she blows! As we all saw on TV recently, the AFL had a fewteething problems in a game at Blacktown as thetrain from Rooty Hill went past the ground and blewit’s whistle. Well, it appears we are not exempt fromthis in the VAFA. About 20 minutes into the firstquarter of the St.Kevin’s/St.Bernards match lastweek, field umpire Jon Auditore put the arms in theair as the siren went. Unfortunately it was a truckiegoing mad on the horn as he flew down the Monash.Jon soon realised his error much to the amusementof everyone and quickly re-started the quarter.Maybe we need to go back to those old-fashionedschool bells.WelcomeAs mentioned last week, we have a few new and/orre-cycled faces in the coaching ranks this year. We canintroduce our first one to you with a profile.Name/nickname: Tony Hales/ Rowdy.Role: Senior Squad Field Umpires Coach.Umpiring/coaching experience:Coaching umpires: VFL 1996 to 2001, SFL 2002 to2005, SUA 2006 to 2009.Junior football coach: 1991 to 1994 at MoorabbinBears (MSJFL) including Under 12 Premiership in1993.Umpired/played previously:Umpired SESFL 1980 to 1982, VFL/AFL 1983 to1990, VAFA 1991 to 1995.Played junior football at Murrumbeena 1977 to 1978.Current Occupation: Teacher at Stella Maris,Beaumaris.Pet peeve about football: People who whinge aboutchanges to the rules. They bring up false notions58Steve McCarthy & Leah Gallagherabout other sports not changing their rules.Completely wrong! I believe that all changes havemade footy a much better game.Favourite Hobbies other than football: HorseRacing, Hosting Trivia Nights.Achievements (in life and/or football): Beinginvolved in umpiring non-stop for 30 years. Why do you coach umpires? It is so satisfying seeingyoung people reach their full potential, whether itbeing umpiring at VFL or AFL level or justprogressing through the grades at local level.New CareerMost umpires (especially the older ones) look forwardto the end of the year and the opportunity to put thefeet up and relax for a few months. Well one of ourveterans certainly didn’t do that over summer. Ourformer president Rob Mayston decided that at theage of “no comment” he would resurrect his athleticscareer. His comeback season was very successful withRob winning in the Victorian championships andthen the National championships that were held inPerth over Easter. Rob picked up gold in the 200m(24.55) and 400m (55.28). These were both his fastesttimes of the season. It just shows that in some casesolder umpires don’t get old, they just get faster. Welldone Rob!!WebsiteDon’t forget to keep an eye on the VAFAUA website(expertly maintained by Tim Sutcliffe) athttp://www.vafaua.asn.au/Bookmark it, as you’ll need to look at it each Friday.Southern FMDon’t forget to tune into Tommy Brain and SteveMcCarthy for all the latest VAFA news at 9:30 everySunday morning on 88.3 Southern FM. So weexpect even better. It’s a hard job to define before the year begins justhow good these clubs will be or how competitivethe two grades will prove. For a start, they aregeographical groupings, which is good for parentsor over-aged players as the commute isn’t as long.As a young person myself, I appreciate keepingthings local. Yes, GPS is a big help, but it’s hardlyon the priority list as a birthday gift from the folksand Melway is, well, so 1998.Close geography, of course, might mean thatthings get a little out of balance on the ladder. However, the VAFA has decided that all theneighbourly stuff will end mid-year and ifWerribee travels to Mentone, so be it.The other big factor on the competition is thefootball nurseries from which these teams spring.Northern Bullants is a club with just one team inthe Amateurs. They were runners-up last yearafter dominating early. They did, however, makemany friends and win admiration for theirsartorial splendour. St Bernard’s, on the otherhand, have junior clubs galore that compete inthe WRFL before switching to the Ammos forthe U18s and for senior footy. I have no ideaabout their dress sense, but let’s hope they do.Old Camberwell put up a fair showing last yearand their junior program is looking stronger. They might have gone closer in this section hadthey not sought to supplement their terrific U19team with some Eighteens. Then again, if yousmell an opportunity at a flag, you don’t ignore it.Oakleigh had a great year, with their seniors beingpromoted to Premier B and the 18s of coursewon the flag. The intriguingly named Krushersshould again be a top contender. It’s good to see St John’s enter a team this year. The school football culture in the deep-southeastis perhaps not as strong as it is inMelbourne’s heartland, so players cansometimes be tempted to play in some of thoseregional leagues. I’m not sure when the schoolplays its footy, but JOCs could end up fieldingquite a number of schoolboys, as other clubs dowhen they have no school footy on Saturdays.Aquinas are in a similar boat. This U18competition could not only begin real orenhance school rivalries that are not yet there, but could be a terrific pathway to the clubseniors. Anyway, good luck to them.St Bede’s Mentone Tigers have proven to befierce in almost every grade they’ve played. Acouple of years ago, their U19s were unbeatableand their seniors nearly so. Their entry intoU18s indicates they want their cubs to learn theways of the Tiger very young. Good for them, not so good for other clubs in years to come.St Mary’s Salesian was the club of 2009 ScribeJoe Morsello and readers will be sorry to hearthat he has moved on from both that club andfrom his job as scribe. His insightful, factualanalysis will be missed, while Joey’s Jargon willlong be remembered. I take it that his club willsurvive without him and their 18s might bebetter without the scribe’s intense spotlight.Werribee, Therry Penola and Rupertswoodhave all entered teams, setting up westernderbies. These areas are football hot-housesand it’s great to see Ammo clubs getting inearly and setting young players on the rightfootball course.UHS-VU/Flemington enjoyed their year in2009 and will be looking to be as successful onthe field as they were off it.Good luck to all and please send any stories ornews to walda_91@hotmail.comTHE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010 59
