CIVIC EDUCATION PROJECTThe Civic Education Project, an international voluntary organisation rooted inthe belief that democratic society requires critically-minded <strong>and</strong> informed individuals,works to enhance the development of higher <strong>and</strong> professional educationin societies engaged in political <strong>and</strong> economic transition.CEP was started in 1991, with 15 lecturers in eight universities of Czechoslovakia.This year CEP has 200 teachers working at almost 100 universities of Albania,Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary,Kazakstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro,Pol<strong>and</strong>, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan <strong>and</strong> Yugoslavia.VISITING LECTURER PROGRAMSocial science academics commit to a year of living <strong>and</strong> working at a universityin Central or Eastern Europe or Eurasia. CEP attracts Visiting Lecturersfrom the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Far East <strong>and</strong> Australasia.By introducing critical thinking, academic writing, research <strong>and</strong> analyticalskills, CEP Visiting Lecturers expose their students <strong>and</strong> faculty colleaguesto a new <strong>and</strong> exciting range of materials <strong>and</strong> methodology. CEP VisitingLecturers also bring with them books, journals <strong>and</strong> articles that theydonate to their regional university libraries.THE EASTERN SCHOLAR PROGRAMCEP’s Eastern Scholar Program is a conscious strategy to reverse the“brain drain” from the region <strong>and</strong> help talented individuals return to theirhome countries. CEP assists these scolars by providing financial <strong>and</strong> institutionalassistance for up to two academic years. Without CEP’s support,many of these scholars could not afford academic careers <strong>and</strong> would beforced to take additional jobs.CEP is committed to assisting regional universities win back <strong>and</strong> retainthese promising young scholars in the hope that they will revitalise departments<strong>and</strong> help reform higher education.OUTREACH ACTIVITIESIn addition to teaching, CEP Fellows initiate a wide variety of outreachactivities for both their students <strong>and</strong> department colleagues, recent examplesinclude curriculum development, library projects, faculty trainingworkshops, conferences, moot courts <strong>and</strong> debate forums.
