ESTORIL / SINTRA...
The aristocratic Estoril & Sintra
area is an established golfing destination
with a great mix of courses, a taste of
which we provide here...
The European Tour returns this year
to Penha Longa’s superbly designed
18-hole Atlantic championship course,
which enjoys stunning views of Estoril,
Cascais and the Sintra hills.
This lavish 5-star resort thrust the
Estoril/Sintra coast into the golfing
spotlight during the 1990’s.
Penha Longa incorporates a palace set
in an ancient monastery. It has served as a
private retreat for Portuguese Royalty and
foreign dignitaries.
Oitavos Dunes is a fine addition to
the Lisboa Coast golfing landscape. It
features three distinct landscape forms;
forested area (with beautiful umbrella pine
trees), dunes land, and more open coastal
transition areas. The course is carefully
routed to take advantage of all three
zones and provides lovely views of the
Atlantic and Sintra hills.
Another impressive golf development
is the Hotel Quinta da Marinha
Resort, just 30-minutes from Lisbon,
which offers a new vision of comfort and
refinement following an extensive
refurbishment programme that has earned
the resort a 5-star classification.
The delightful Estoril course is
steeped in history and a pleasure to play.
it was formed in 1929 when Fausto de
Figueiredo, a gambling concessionaire at
the local casino, decided to develop a nine
hole golf course.
In the mid-1940’s the course was
upgraded to 18 holes by acclaimed course
designer MacKenzie Ross and the lay-out
is now separated by the Lisbon-Estoril
motorway.
Be sure to plan a visit also to the
delightful Pestana Beloura course,
which is situated between Cascais and
Sintra. This flat and enjoyable 18-hole
course provides fine mountain views and
it’s fun negotiating the 40,000 trees of
various species that flank the verdant
fairways.
QUINTA DO PERU
THE COSTA AZUL...
The Costa Azul is a beautiful part of the
Lisboa Coast. It is steeped in history and
tradition, famous for its cuisine and wines,
and it is a natural holiday retreat that has
a relaxing effect on visitors.
Portugal’s Blue Coast is situated on the
south bank of the Tagus river, just a few
kilometres from Lisbon.
Visitors enjoy great hospitality, a
relaxed pace of life, easy access to Lisbon,
excellent gastronomy and a very
impressive golfing menu.
Highly rated Quinta do Peru is set in
the Azeitao region close to the castles of
Sesimbra and Setubal. American architect
Rocky Roquemore maintains this was one
of his finest course designs. Trees, lakes,
large bunkers and undulating greens add
definition to a thrilling golf course. It is a
‘must play’ when you visit the Lisboa Golf
Coast with the delightful 4-star
Sesimbra Hotel & Spa serving as a
perfect base for golfers exploring this
charming region (see advertisement on
page 38). continued...
