A pleasant surprise, for thoseon a budget at least, is the associated SunnyVilla, located just across the street, wheresimilar rooms, also decked out with TV,fridge and air-conditioning, are available fora fraction of the price.Yamonnar Oo Resort HOTEL $$(%40338, in Yangon 01-530 722; kbzinfo@bzbank.com.mm; r $37-45, bungalows $38-70) Down atthe southern end of the beach this modernhotel offers good value for money. Therooms and bungalows were being extensivelyrenovated and refurbished at researchtime, making them an even better deal. Thelandscaped gardens are another highlight.Silver View Resort HOTEL $$(%40317, in Yangon 01-502 681; silverviewresort@gmail.com; r $30-50) Also located south of thevillage and popular with vacationing locals,this attractive compound offers green,condo-like, duplex bungalows, most offeringsea views. Packages with transportationfrom Yangon are available.5EatingYou should try your hardest to break out ofyour hotel restaurant at least once in orderto eat in the village, where there is a goodrange of cheap restaurants. There is little todistinguish one from another – most placesshare a facsimile menu that focuses onseafood-based dishes prepared in the Chinesestyle. They’re open for breakfast, lunchand dinner.Ngwe Hline SiRestaurant CHINESE, BURMESE $$(mains K3500) Maybe the pick of the bunchin the village, the Ngwe Hline Si has allthe usual seafood and mixes it up withpastas and a variety of tasty starters.Golden MyanmarRestaurant CHINESE, BURMESE $(mains from K1000) When asked for a goodplace to eat, most locals will point you inthe direction of this seafood shack, locatedin the middle of the village.Kaung Kaung Lay CHINESE, BURMESE $(mains from K1500) This restaurant has thesame facsimile menu as the others, butdoes Burmese dishes, including a goodchicken curry, quite well. Located in thecentre of the village.Happy Restaurant TEAHOUSE $(dishes from K400) If you didn’t fork out fora hotel breakfast, or simply want somethinglocal, head to this buzzing teahousewhere you can get Myanmar-style breakfastfaves such as mohinga (noodle soup)or deep-fried sticks of dough.8InformationLocated towards the northern end of the village,Sandalwood (%09 856 8130), a cafeinformationcentre, is the place to go for localinformation. Tom Tom may have a few raggedcopies of a good local map printed by theMyanmar Hotelier Association, can arrangea day trip or snorkelling excursion, and rentsmotorcycles. If he’s not here, Tom Tom can alsobe found at his second offi ce at the Shwe HinTha Hotel.8Getting There & AroundTo get to Ngwe Saung from Yangon, see p 71 .A bus leaves for Yangon every morning at6.30am (K8000, six hours) from the crossroadsbetween the village and the beachresorts.Minibuses from Pathein (K3000, two hours)stop fi rst at the intersection between the beginningof the village and the Treasure BeachResort.
