Supplementyour walk with Historical Walks inYangon: A Myanmar Heritage Trust GuideMap – map available from Silkworm Books(www.silkwormbooks.com).We recommend starting this tour in thecool hours of the morning, so kick it off witha caffeine boost and Burmese-style breakfastat a teahouse such as 1 Thone PanHla, a typical Burmese teahouse. From hereit’s only a short walk to the 2200-year-old2 Sule Paya, the geographic and commercialheart of the city, and where the Britishdesignedgrid street pattern was centred.Make a circle or two around the monumentto get just the right angle for your photograph, but don't feel obligated to go inside,as the largely unremarkable interior isprobably not worth the $2 entry fee. Aftera complete rotation or two and an insidevisit, cross the busy traffic circle to the eastand you’ll find the twice-rebuilt 3 CityHall, a yellow colonial building with orientalovertones. On the next corner further easton Mahabandoola Rd is the 4 (former)Immigration Office, once one of the largestdepartment stores in Asia, now seeminglyabandoned. Across the street is the5 Immanuel Baptist Church, originallybuilt in 1830, though the present structuredates from 1885.Continuing east on Mahabandoola Rdyou’ll pass a couple of alleyways crammedwith food stalls, many selling the type ofdeep-fried snacks and sweets that theBurmese seem to love so much. Considerrefuelling and take the next major rightonto Pansodan St, where on the east sideof the street you’ll find several stalls sellingsecond-hand and photocopied books. TheBurmese are big readers and this strip iscolloquially referred to as Yangon's open-airlibrary.
