Linked behind this isthe ‘Hall of Victory’, then the so-called GlassPalace (aka Central Palace), where the kingslived. It was so named not because of anywindows, but because King Thibaw slept ina four-poster bed made with glass pillars. This bed still exists, and is today displayedat the Culture Museum, the westernmostbuilding within the palace oval, which wasonce Chief Queen’s Audience Hall. The museumalso includes 13 life-sized models offormer cabinet members in traditional attireand some great vintage photos: the Burmeseenvoys to France must have caused a stir incostumes that even Gaultier couldn’t havetopped. Many other buildings within the oval areopen but empty. Outside the oval (and thusout of bounds), you might spy the tomb ofKing Mindon, ruined narrow-gauge trainsthat once ferried tourists around, sheds containingover 600 stone inscription slabs anda small airplane on some rocks in the trees.
