It’s obvious to any parent whoreads the news or is reallyconnected to their children’s lives, that drug and alcohol abuse anddependence are a major problem amongtoday’s adolescents and young adults. What may not be as obvious is what todo about it if you know or suspect thatyour child is caught up in it.Traditional approaches normally involveinpatient rehabilitation programs ofvarying lengths using strict adherence toa 12-step program. Group or individualoutpatient treatments use the 12-step model alone or as a follow up toinpatient rehab.Unfortunately, results from suchtraditional methods are frequentlydisappointing. Success rates (i.e., totalabstinence after one year) followinginpatient rehab treatment are as low as18%. Successful outpatient treatmentprograms have been highly variable, with few prevailing standards. However, a new team approachcombining a Board Certified physicianin Addiction Medicine, Dr. MichaelFrost, and Clinical Psychologist, W. E.‘Ted’ Dewart, Ph.D. working in tandem, has shown promising results.A D V E R T I S E M E N TNew Treatment ForAdolescent SubstanceAbuse Shows Real Promise.H54 www.mainlinetoday.com Healthcare guide 2010Their new individualized treatmentplan often provides outpatientdetoxification and medical treatmentfor withdrawal without an adolescentmissing a single day of school or work. And, when indicated, medicationscan be given after detoxification tohelp reduce the potential for relapse. When combined with a unique weeklyintensive psychotherapy program, theirinitial results show the success rate oftotal abstinence after one year to bevery encouraging, surpassing 75%.Their positive outcomes are a resultof using a whole new category ofmedications that change the chemistryof the brain coupled with intensive,two-hour long psychotherapy sessions. Here, Dr. Dewart works to re-structurethe adolescent’s underlying personalityby teaching how his or her thinking, relating, and behaving is getting in theway of an otherwise successful life. For more on how Drs. Dewart &Frost’s team approach may be ableto help your adolescent or youngadult, call 610-825-6607 or visitwww.DewartandFrost.com.William E. ‘Ted’ Dewart, Ph.D. Diplomate American Boardof Psychological Specialties; former Adjunct AssociateProfessor, Temple University; Former Director, GroupPsychotherapy, Philadelphia Psychiatric Center; CFC.Michael Frost, M.D., Double Board Certifi ed in AddictionMedicine and Internal Medicine; Internationally renownedspeaker; Advisor in Chemical Dependency to CountyPrograms, Hospitals, and Schools.Authors of the upcoming book: “The Self-Medicating Generation: The Experts’Solution to the Cycle of Addiction”UrologyDr. Donald Andersen15 Industrial Blvd., Suite 201, Paoli,(610) 647-3660; Brandywine Hospital,213 Reeceville Road, Suite 21, Coatesville,(610) 383-7663Education: Jefferson Medical CollegeDr. Leigh BergmanBryn Mawr Urology Associates, 919 C1stoga Road,Bldg. 1, Suite 300, Bryn Mawr,(610) 525-6580Education: University of Pennsylvania Schoolof MedicineDr. Guy BernsteinCenter for Urologic Care, 245 Bryn Mawr Ave.,Bryn Mawr, (610) 525-2515Education: Columbia University College ofPhysicians and SurgeonsDr. Kenneth P. The American Cancer Society’s most recent estimate for the numberof colorectal cancer cases in the United States are for 2009: 106,100 new cases of coloncancer and 40,870 new cases of rectal cancer in both men and women. While colorectal cancer is often found after symptoms appear, most people with earlycolon or rectal cancer have no symptoms of the disease. Symptoms usually appearonly with more advanced disease. This is why getting the recommended screening testsbefore any symptoms develop is so important. The American Cancer Society recommends colonoscopy as well as other options. When colorectal cancer is caught at an early stage, it has a 90% survival rate. “Colonpolyps are the seeds for colon cancer. By finding and removing them, we hope to keepthe garden clear” according to Robert R. Atkins M.D., Medical Director.Take control: be an informed health consumer, get screened.Call your physician and discuss what option is right for you.For more information visit the American Cancer Society:www.cancer.org or call 1-800-ACS-2345Robert R.
