Chapter 10: Open Space, Amenity & The Natural EnvironmentThe main threats to the Dunes and the Backstrand area are as follows:Threats to theDunes &Backstrand• Threats from recreational purposes including horseriding, bike scrambling and casual walkers;• Proximity to <strong>Tramore</strong> town leading to high usageand trampling ;• Erosion.It is the aim of the <strong>Council</strong> to protect the sand dunes in so far as possible. Sandfencing and sand ladders are now the subject of funding applications and theseworks could be undertaken in the immediate to medium terms.POLICYProtection ofthe sanddunes….PolicyCZM1: It is the aim of the <strong>Council</strong> to protect where possible the sand dunes in<strong>Tramore</strong> and to implement any findings that may arises from the Centrefor Marine and Coastal Resources Report (2006)10.2 URBAN FORESTRY/ WOODLANDSUrban Forestry plays a major role in developing urban areas in terms ofsupporting flora and fauna and acting as a natural habitat for wild life. Visually,it can enhance the amenity of an area, often serving as a barrier betweenadjoining landuses. Furthermore, it may have valuable amenity potential for thelocal residents providing attractive walkways and paths.Generally urban forestryproposals for amenitypurposes will be supported,where planting of deciduousspecies will contribute to therichness and diversity of floraand fauna of the area, and theoverall visual amenity of thearea. <strong>Plan</strong>ting of coniferousforestry shouldbe avoided in the urban areaand in areas overlooking theNewtown Woodscoastline or along the riverestuary. Urban forestryproposals should include abroad mix of deciduous species indigenous to the area. Newtown woods wasestablished as a ‘Neighbourwood’ Scheme of the Forestry Service.69
