Chapter 9: The Built EnvironmentStructures such as street furniture, boundary walling or entrance gateways whichcontribute to the visual identity, character and existing sense of place, althoughperhaps not warranting protection in their own right but still forming part of thearchitectural heritage of the locality, can be given a degree of protection withinan ACA. The <strong>Council</strong> will assess the viability of designating an ArchitecturalConservation <strong>Area</strong> over the life time of the <strong>Plan</strong>.9.1.4 National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH)The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) interim survey waspublished in May 2004. This survey identified and highlighted a representativeselection of the architectural heritage of <strong>County</strong> <strong>Waterford</strong>. Many of theidentified structures were considered of Regional importance within theircategories of special interest. It isthe recommendation of theMinister of the Environment,Heritage and <strong>Local</strong> Government 3that these particular structures,specific parts of particularstructures or specific featureswithin the attendant grounds ofparticular structures be includedon the Record of ProtectedStructures (RPS).
