Chapter 8: InfrastructureOBJECTIVESDistrictMeteringScheme…Upgrading andimproving thewater supply..Objectives:WSO1: To continue implementing the District Metering Scheme for watersupply and the detection and control of unaccounted for water (UFW)in the network.WSO2: Maintain a programme for upgrading and improving of the watersupply scheme in terms of quantity, quality, pressure, storage andreliability8.3 WASTE WATER TREATMENTThe existing <strong>Tramore</strong> Sewage system is a combined system, which incorporatesstorm overflows. All the sewage in <strong>Tramore</strong> discharges to the main pumphouseat the eastern end of the Promenade. This includes the Newtown area, which isserved by the Cove pumping station which in turn pumps sewage into the town’snetwork. From the Promenade pump house the sewage, after comminution, ispumped to the outfall.Construction is currently underway for the first phased of a waste watertreatment plant at Riverstown to serve the <strong>Tramore</strong> <strong>Area</strong>. This plant will providetreatment of effluent to E.U Urban waste water treatment Directive Standardsand EC and National Bathing water quality standards. The design population ofthe plant is for a year round population equivalent of 11,000 persons and thecapability of treating up to 20,000 p.e for the peak summer period. The actualload to the treatment plant is not yet known and will not be determinedaccurately until the commissioning of the plant when a build up of flow and loaddata can be collected during the process. The new scheme consists of anupgrading of the collection system, the provision of new pumping stations, awastewater treatment plant at Riverstown and a 2km outfall pipe for thedischarge of treated effluent into the Bay. The scheme is expected to becompleted by the end of 2007.POLICYProvision ofInfrastructure…Policy:WW1: To endeavour to facilitate the orderly growth of the urban area and topreserve coastal amenity by providing sewering of those areas delineatedfor development under this <strong>Plan</strong>.59
