Chapter 5: Community & Social Development5.6.1 Amenity Paths and Networks“<strong>Waterford</strong> <strong>County</strong>: a Monument for the future-<strong>Waterford</strong> <strong>County</strong> Strategy forEconomic Social and Cultural Development 2002-2012” sets out an objective:“To enable <strong>Waterford</strong> to become the Walking Capital of Ireland”<strong>Tramore</strong> is home to a spectacular and varied coastline that provides exceptionalwalking routes such as Doneraile walk, the Cliff Road and Newtown woods. The<strong>Council</strong> will encourage all walking initiatives established in <strong>Tramore</strong> as atourism product for the area and in achieving <strong>Waterford</strong> <strong>County</strong>’s goal inbecoming the walking capital of Ireland.5.6.2 Need for Additional FacilitiesCommunityImpactAssessments…..Given the significant population increases in <strong>Tramore</strong> over the past number ofyears it is necessary that certain additional community and social facilities bedeveloped in line with future housing developments. It is necessary to supportthe increases in population with the required community facilities. The <strong>Council</strong>may require prospective developers of larger housing estate developments tosubmit a Community Impact Assessment to ascertain the capacity of the existingcommunity facilities to absorb the proposed development and the possible needfor additional facilities to accommodate the population increase. The report mayinclude a needs assessment of the following (amongst others)• Childcare facilities• Community buildings• Recreational/ sporting areas• Additional educational facilities5.7 ARTS AND • Elderly CULTURE housing unitsThe Office of Public Works has recentlyrestored <strong>Tramore</strong> Coast Guard Station.Every effort was made to retain thearchitectural and historic integrity of thislandmark building which is located on aprominent site overlooking <strong>Tramore</strong> Bay.<strong>Tramore</strong> Coast Guard Station has played animportant role in hosting various exhibitionsand social and cultural nights since itsrefurbishment and reopening to the public in2004. <strong>Waterford</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Council</strong> lease partof the building and run it as a centre for arts,craft & heritage activities in partnershipwith <strong>Tramore</strong> Development Trust Ltd.43
