It is EU policy that any development within a designatedNHA, SPA or SAC (see over) must be compatible with the protection of theenvironment or it will not avail of EU grant-aid. The DoEHLG has requestedthat it be advised by local authorities of any development likely to impact onNHAs.A building or other structure which is used for professional, administrative,financial, marketing or clerical work and in which the principal activity is thehandling or processing of information or research and includes a bank or abuilding society but not a post office or a betting office.A structure or land used for the retail sale of petrol, diesel, motor oils, car partsand accessories and the provision of minor services for vehicles such as air,water, cleaning facilities, car wash. It does not include a commercial garage orcar salesrooms but may include small convenience shops limited to a specificarea.A building or part of a building used as a church, chapel, oratory, monastery,convent, meeting house or other place of public devotion. It will also include theuses of structures for the social, recreational and educational activities of areligious body using the structure.An outdoor facility for the playing of games and sports.A building or part of a building used for the provision of public services whichwill include electricity, telephone, television and other statutory undertakers andstructures required by statutory undertakers in the carrying out of theirfunctions. It will also include public lavatories, telephone boxes, bus sheltersand other similar structures.A building or part of a building which is used as a swimming pool, skating rink,gymnasium, squash centre, health studio and for most indoor sports facilities. Itmay also include a concert hall, a music hall, a dance hall/disco, theatre, cinemaand similar type buildings. The use of any such building for any of thosepurposes specified above may be restricted by planning permission.The use for human habitation of a building or a part of a building including houses,flats, mews buildings and including other buildings located within the curtilage of adwelling which are used incidentally to the enjoyment of the dwelling.107
