Neutral Grounding ResistorsNeutral Grounding TransformersAvtron Neutral Grounding Resistorsare designed to provide added safetyto industrial distribution systems bylimiting ground fault current toreasonable levels. In a typical solidlygrounded four wire system, theneutral is tied directly to earthground. This can cause high groundfault current (typically 10,000 to20,000 amps) and excessive damageto transformers, generators, motors, wiring, and associated equipment.Inserting an Avtron Neutral GroundingResistor between neutral andground limits fault current to a safelevel (typically 25 to 400 amps)while still allowing sufficient currentflow to operate fault clearing relays.Limiting fault current also reducesthe problem of transient overvoltages(up to six times normal voltage)which can occur during arcingtype ground faults.Avtron Neutral Grounding Resistorsare engineered with reliability, safety, and ease of installation as top priorities.Resistor elements, terminals, support rods and exterior fastenersare made from stainless steel foradded durability. Enclosures aremanufactured from corrosion resistantaluminized steel finished withASA-61 gray polyurethane enamelpaint. Multi-lingual voltage warningsigns are provided for increasedsafety. Forged lifting eyes arefurnished for easy handling. Internalconnection points eliminate conventional“live” external bushings andthe need for expensive elevatingstands or towers.Grounding Resistor rated 2400 volts L-N, 400 amps, 10 seconds, with 200:5 C.T.Avtron Neutral Grounding Resistors are designed and tested in strict accordancewith IEEE Standard 32-1972. This standard specifies maximum allowabletemperature ratings for neutral grounding devices for various duty cyclesas follows:DUTY CYCLE MAX. TEMP. RISE TYPICAL CURRENTContinuous 385°C 1 to 25 ampsExtended * 610°C 15 / 25 / 50 amps60 seconds or less 760°C 100 to 2000 amps* Defined as 10 minutes or greater, no more than 90 days total per year. Also referred to as “Mining Duty”.Avtron Neutral Grounding Resistors can be supplied with open frameconstruction, for installation inside switchgear or similar enclosures, or fullyassembled with indoor / outdoor safety enclosures. Options include:• Current Transformers• Potential Transformers• Disconnect Switches (oil or air insulated)• Overcurrent Relays• Aluminum or Stainless Steel Enclosures• Special Paint• Seismic Qualified Units• High Altitude Ratings (above 6000 feet)• Hazardous Location Ratings (Class 1, Group D, Division II)Grounding Transformer rated 2400 volts L-N, 10 amps, 60 seconds, with 15KVA 4160:240 P.T.Avtron Neutral Grounding Transformersare similar in design to AvtronNeutral Grounding Resistors andprovide high resistance groundingfor medium voltage generators andtransformers. The standard packageconsists of a single-phase, dry-type,Epoxycast transformer plus a secondarypower resistor, mounted in acommon enclosure. The transformeris typically selected with a primaryvoltage equal to or greater than thesystem voltage to maintain a highinsulation rating for added safety. The transformer secondary is ratedat 240 volts and factory wired to theresistor. The resistor is sized so thefault current reflected through thetransformer produces the desiredfault current on the system neutral(typically 2 to 12 amps for 60 seconds).A voltage relay connected tothe secondary resistor is used todetect the presence of a groundfault. If the fault persists beyond acertain time period, the relay willsend a signal to open the maincircuit breaker. The following information is requiredwhen specifying Avtron NeutralGrounding Resistors or AvtronNeutral Grounding Transformers:• System Voltage• Line-to-Neutral Voltage• Current Rating• Maximum Time On• Open or Enclosed• Current TransformerRatio (if applicable)• Grounding TransformerKVA Rating (if applicable)• Special Options
