Animal Care Studies - Western Sydney Institute of TAFE, RichmondDry seed can be provided in hoppers, installed undercover, which have suitableremovable trays below for catching seed husks and any wasted seed. Catching trayswould need to be emptied and cleaned on a regular basis. Hoppers should be cleaned outand washed/disinfected at least once a week more regularly if time permits.Water containers and landscape water features are required to be cleaned out and freshwater supplied daily. The water containers should be made from a smooth, non-porousand easy to clean surface, which would also assist in reducing the growth of algae.Behavioural enrichment feeding should be provided to stimulate natural behaviour and toadd variety to the presentation of food for P. swainsonii. Forage trays with a layer of seedand bark/leaves mixed together can provide ground-feeding opportunities similar to awoodland floor. Flowering branches of Eucalyptus, Melaleuca, Grevillea, or from anyother food plants that are listed in Figure 11, will simulate tree top foraging and can beplaced in suitably sized PVC tubing secured in the floor or to the framework of anenclosure. Eucalyptus branches that are infested with lerps (refer Figure 10) could becollected to provide natural protein especially during the breeding season. Fruit andvegetables can be skewered on the ends of perches to give some physical activities (referFigure 25). Alternative behavioural enrichment feeding methods are provided inAppendix 2. (Macwhirter 1987) (Sindel and Gill 2003) (Willemsen and Hawkins 2003)(Wilson 1990)Figure 25. An example of fruit and vegetable items skewered on perches for behaviouralenrichment feeding.Keith Naylor 28/3/2005 Version 3 45
