A love of writing prompted Year 7 student,
obvious talent for writing resulted in
her being awarded the title of Regional
pack, with all proceeds used to ‘adopt’ a leafy
sea dragon through the World Wildlife Fund’s
“Sponsor an Endangered Animal Program”.
Special thanks to all who supported this initiative.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program at St Luke’s continues to
grow, both in numbers and in the levels of achievement, attempted
by students. This year several different expeditions occurred both on
land and on water.
The peaks around the local area were again visited with groups
walking on Mt Woowoonga and at Coongarra Rock. These groups
encountered varying conditions including a very steep descent from
the south western side of Mt Woowoonga through thick vine scrub
which proved very challenging.
An expedition was also conducted on the Mary River with Jana Rohen
utilising this opportunity to complete her Silver Badge. This expedition
encountered a variety of wildlife including platypus, snakes and a very
distressed steer.
Whilst the expeditions are an exciting component of the scheme,
there are services, physical recreation and skills components as well.
The scheme is available for students from 14 years of age and fits in
very well with other co-curricular activities.
Students interested in participating in the
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program in 2005
should see Mr Deer.
Pictured is Rebecca Garrad who completed
the first St Luke’s student to reach the
accreditation of the Silver Badge.
BRENDAN LOGUE
2004 was a huge year for Brendan Logue. In addition to completing his
Year 12 studies and participating fully in the co-curricular life of St Luke’s,
Brendan found time to further his Cricket aspirations as Captain of the
Queensland Country Under 19 Cricket team. Brendan was also a pivotal
player for Queensland Schoolboys Under 19 Cricket in their match against
New South Wales on the Gold Coast, which resulted in his acceptance to
the Queensland Academy of Sport Regional Program.
2005 will see Brendan studying Business Management at Central Queensland
University in Bundaberg, and working for Queensland Sport and Recreation
touring schools across the State to encourage children to participate in
sport, and promote the importance of pursuing an active lifestyle.
Nicholas Sward achieved his dream of National representation, when he
an outstanding Touch player who
possesses lightning speed,
agility and the ability to
take the ball to the line
