Spread this powdered mixture, the lead<br />

picrate, in a flat pan to air dry.<br />

Note: If possible, dry the mixture in a hot, not boiling,<br />

water bath f<strong>or</strong> a period of 2 hours.<br />

1.21 Preparation of Picric Acid from Aspirin<br />

Picric acid can be used as a booster explosive in detonat<strong>or</strong>s (section 6.13), a high explosive charge, <strong>or</strong> as<br />

an intermediate to preparing lead picrate (section 1.20) <strong>or</strong> DDNP (section 1.19).<br />

Materials Required<br />

Aspirin tablets (5 grains <strong>or</strong> 325 mg per tablet)<br />

Alcohol, 95% pure<br />

Sulfuric acid, concentrated, (battery acid – boil until white fumes appear)<br />

Potassium nitrate (section 1.2)<br />

Water<br />

Paper towels<br />

Canning jar, 1 pint
