Ammonium chl<strong>or</strong>ide (sal ammoniac)<br />

Charcoal powder<br />

Copper <strong>or</strong> brass plate about 4 inches (10 cm) square and 1/16 inch (2<br />

mm) thick<br />

Aluminum plate same size as copper <strong>or</strong> brass plate<br />

Wax and paper (<strong>or</strong> waxed paper) Candles<br />

Wire, string <strong>or</strong> tape<br />

Container f<strong>or</strong> mixing<br />

Knife<br />

One of the following:<br />

Medicines<br />

Soldering fluxes<br />

Fertilizers<br />

Ice melting chemicals f<strong>or</strong> roads<br />

Potassium permanganate, solid<br />

Disinfectants<br />

Deod<strong>or</strong>ants<br />

Manganese dioxide Dead dry batteries<br />

Note: If ammonium chl<strong>or</strong>ide solution is not concentrated (at least 45% by weight) boil off some of the<br />

water.<br />

Procedure<br />

1. Mix th<strong>or</strong>oughly (do not grind) approximately equal volumes of powdered charcoal, ammonium<br />

chl<strong>or</strong>ide and one of the following: potassium permanganate <strong>or</strong> manganese dioxide. Add water until a<br />

very thick paste is f<strong>or</strong>med. If ammonium chl<strong>or</strong>ide is in solution f<strong>or</strong>m, it may not be necessary to add<br />

water.<br />

2. Spread a layer of this mixture, about 1/8 inch (3<br />

mm) thick on a clean copper <strong>or</strong> brass plate. The<br />

layer must be thick enough to prevent a second<br />

plate from touching the copper plate when it is<br />

pressed on top.
