6.7 Fuse C<strong>or</strong>ds<br />

These fuse c<strong>or</strong>ds are used f<strong>or</strong> igniting propellants and incendiaries <strong>or</strong>, with a nonelectric blasting cap, to<br />

detonate explosives.<br />

6.7.1 Fuse C<strong>or</strong>ds — Fast Burning Fuse<br />

The burning rate of this fuse is approximately 40 inches (100 cm) per minute.<br />

Soft cotton string<br />

Fine black powder <strong>or</strong><br />

Piece of round stick<br />

Two pans <strong>or</strong> dishes<br />

Procedure<br />

Materials Required<br />

Potassium nitrate (saltpeter) 25 parts<br />

Charcoal 3 parts<br />

Sulfur 2 parts<br />

1. Moisten fine black powder to f<strong>or</strong>m a paste <strong>or</strong> prepare a substitute as follows:<br />

a. Dissolve potassium nitrate in an equal amount of water.<br />

b. Pulverize charcoal by spreading thinly on a hard surface and rolling the round stick over it to crush<br />

to a fine powder.<br />

c. Pulverize sulfur in the same manner.<br />

d. Dry mix sulfur and charcoal.<br />

e. Add potassium nitrate solution to the dry mix to obtain a th<strong>or</strong>oughly wet paste.<br />

2. Twist <strong>or</strong> braid three strands of cotton string<br />

together.
