After a time delay, the acid will eat through the rubber disc and ignite the sugar chl<strong>or</strong>ate mix. The<br />

delay time depends upon the thickness and type of rubber used f<strong>or</strong> the disc. Bef<strong>or</strong>e using this device,<br />

tests should be conducted to determine the delay time that can be expected.<br />

Note: A piece of standard automobile inner tube (about 1/32 inch thick) will provide a delay time of<br />

approximately 45 minutes.<br />

5.6 <strong>Improvised</strong> White Flare<br />

An improvised white flare can be made from potassium nitrate, aluminum powder and shellac. It has<br />

a time duration of approximately 2 minutes.<br />

Wooden rod, 1/4 inch diameter<br />

Tin can, 2-1/2 inch diameter x 5 inches long<br />

Flat window screen<br />

Wooden block<br />
