As the campus' Chief AcademicOfficer, responsible for: over $110 million operating budget; over 1,000 faculty; over 1,000 pr<strong>of</strong>essional andsupport staff; and over 100 baccalaureate programs, 80 master's degree programs, 20 graduate certificateprograms; and 38 doctoral degree programs <strong>of</strong>fered to approximately 17,000 students. Overall responsibilityfor the administration, planning and budgets <strong>of</strong> nine schools and colleges, and associated academic andadministrative services. Long-range planning for institutional research and community outreach programs isalso the responsibility <strong>of</strong> the Provost and Academic Vice <strong>President</strong>, as is the identification <strong>of</strong> external fundingfor such initiatives.Accomplishment highlights: chaired and led the Strategic Plan for the <strong>University</strong> which resulted in thestatement <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> Values, Strategic Goals and Initiatives; established the Resources and PrioritiesAdvisory Committee which advises and guides budgetary decision-making for the <strong>University</strong> inkeeping with the Strategic Plan; supervised enrollment management for the <strong>University</strong> which hasresulted in the increase <strong>of</strong> applications and enrollment in the last three years while maintaining highquality standards; reorganized the academic support services <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> to increase integratedservices for students, including admissions, advisement, registration, graduate studies, career planningand placement; co-chaired the Master Planning Committee <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> which designed $130million <strong>of</strong> new construction including a Life Sciences Building, Art Sculpture Studio, Entry Building,Safety and Police Unit as well as renovation <strong>of</strong> several existing facilities; re-organized the Office <strong>of</strong>Information Technology to provide specialty service and state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art equipment to the <strong>University</strong>;expanded new programs <strong>of</strong> distance and extended learning, including international Web based learning(SUNY Learning Network) and interactive distance education; served as <strong>University</strong> representative tothe Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce’s Technology Business Alliance; collaborated with the Center forEconomic Growth to showcase the many regional s<strong>of</strong>tware companies to students, alumni and thecommunity; represented the <strong>University</strong> in a coalition <strong>of</strong> SUNY research centers requesting larger state2/18/2010, 2:14 PM 4


and government funding for research in economic development for New York State; participated inuniversity external and fund raising efforts, including activities with alumni and friends, privatefoundations, grant writing and specific donor solicitations; promoted Initiatives for Women Fund whichraised half a million dollars for university women for education and pr<strong>of</strong>essional development;increased international activities significantly on campus; initiated an interdisciplinary internationalstudies undergraduate major; developed academic planning principles for the campus (in consultationwith the <strong>University</strong> Senate) to inform decisions, both programmatic and fiscal, to allow the channeling<strong>of</strong> limited resources to best fulfill the mission <strong>of</strong> the university; established the primary distancelearning network for the State <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> New York in Eastern New York (resulting in projects withother SUNY campuses in Slavic languages, educational administration, social work and humandevelopment); implemented an interdisciplinary, living-learning, team-taught, curricular initiative inGeneral Education; implemented a School/College Scholars Graduate Initiative to attract outstandingnew doctoral students; established a process for the review and revision <strong>of</strong> the criteria for promotionand tenure; instituted programmatic initiative for an undergraduate environmental sciences program;established pr<strong>of</strong>essional development workshops for department chairs; expanded operations andservices <strong>of</strong> Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning; host <strong>of</strong> public radio show, “The Best OfOur Knowledge,” which broadcasts to over 80 public radio stations nationally and covers general issues<strong>of</strong> concern on college and university campuses.Dean <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Education, <strong>University</strong> at Albany, State <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> New York, (1992-1995)As the School's chief academic and administrative <strong>of</strong>ficer, responsibility included an operating budget<strong>of</strong> $10 million, program development, curriculum, personnel budget, and fund raising, as well as leadershipfor programs involving the School with external constituencies. The School is comprised <strong>of</strong> about 70 FTEfaculty organized into five academic departments and five research centers. External funding exceeded $4.5million annually. The School's primary focus is at the graduate level, with more than 1,100 students annuallyleading to the M.A. and M.S. degrees, as well as the Ed.D., Psy.D., and Ph.D. degrees. Undergraduate levelinstruction included courses in education foundations and secondary school teacher education.Accomplishment highlights: reorganized the teacher preparation program <strong>of</strong> the School andcreated the Academy for Initial Teacher Preparation; secured more than $5 million dollars in federaland state grants and contracts; established first School <strong>of</strong> Education Alumni Association; significantlyincreased fundraising activities and dollars for the School; established the <strong>University</strong> wide Initiativesfor Women fundraising program; established an enrollment management plan for the School; headedTask Force on Planning for the New York Excelsior High School <strong>of</strong> Science and Mathematics (NewYork legislative mandate); established international agreements with universities in Portugal, Israel,Korea, and Egypt; served as Senior adviser and consultant to the New York State Special Commissionon Educational Structure, Policy and Practices to examine expenditures, management, and affairs <strong>of</strong> theState <strong>of</strong> New York's school districts; provided administrative support for the successful $12.5 milliongrant (U.S. Department <strong>of</strong> Education) to establish the National Research and Development Center onImproving Student Learning and Achievement in English; accomplished American PsychologicalAccreditation for the programs in School Psychology and Counseling Psychology; chaired Search forVice <strong>President</strong> for Student Affairs.Chairperson and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, The Department <strong>of</strong> Educational Services and Research,The Ohio State <strong>University</strong> (1987-1992)Offered a comprehensive program <strong>of</strong> studies to prepare personnel in School Psychology, SpecialEducation, Counselor Education, Rehabilitation Services, and Research and Evaluation. ages. The department included 31 full-time faculty, 3 instructors, 22 adjunct appointments, 1 clinic director, 7clerical staff and approximately 500 students. The yearly budget was approximately $2.5 million.Accomplishment highlights: Reorganized department and enhanced faculty and student morale;fostered growth <strong>of</strong> multidisciplinary psychoeducational clinic; increased number <strong>of</strong> faculty, particularlyminorities; significantly increased fundraising dollars for Department; established internationalagreements with colleges and universities in Israel and Portugal; increased number <strong>of</strong> universityteaching awards for faculty; chaired several university-level search committees; established theResearch and Evaluation Center; served on variety <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> level committees and commissions,including the Commission on Women, Council for Academic Excellence for Women, <strong>University</strong> LongRange Academic Planning Committee and others.Chairperson <strong>of</strong> The Ohio State <strong>University</strong> Senate, The Ohio State <strong>University</strong>, (1990-1991).The Ohio State <strong>University</strong> Senate (130 members) was the chief governance body <strong>of</strong> the university. Ithad 19 standing university committees and was comprised <strong>of</strong> elected faculty representatives, keyadministrators, and student government representatives.Accomplishment highlights: Established a new Research Committee <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> Senate; set uptask force to study the calendar year (change from quarter system to semester); revised and simplifiedprocess for Faculty Workload Statements; served on <strong>President</strong>'s Council; chaired bimonthly <strong>University</strong>Senate Steering Committee which coordinated activities <strong>of</strong> 19 standing committees.Acting Associate Provost and <strong>President</strong>ial Intern, The Ohio State <strong>University</strong>, (1986-87)Responsible for the academic affairs <strong>of</strong> the regional campuses (e.g., OSU-Marion, OSU-Mansfield,OSU-Lima, OSU-Newark). Each campus had approximately 1,000 students, 25-30 faculty and aDean/Director who reported to the Provost's <strong>of</strong>fice in Columbus. Carried out projects which related toestablishing a university research park, revising the undergraduate core curriculum, changing from a quarter tosemester system, and dealing with alumni questions and issues.Accomplishment highlights: As Acting Associate Provost, enhanced organizational activities <strong>of</strong>Council for Regional Campuses; established regional campus research grant award for faculty;administrative oversight <strong>of</strong> Mansfield campus (following dismissal <strong>of</strong> Dean).
