Community <strong>Housing</strong>Neighbour to Neighbour – <strong>John</strong> <strong>Orr</strong> <strong>Tower</strong>February 2009“Neighbour to Neighbour” is our newsletter for students in our <strong>John</strong> <strong>Orr</strong> <strong>Tower</strong> apartments. The intent of thisnewsletter is to communicate information to tenants regarding their lease with Queen’s and their relationshipas residents of <strong>John</strong> <strong>Orr</strong> <strong>Tower</strong> and the Kingston Community.Going Away for Reading Week (Feb 16‐21)• Cancel your newspaper• Leave a light on or purchase an inexpensive timer, which once programmed willturn your lights on and off• Email community.housing@queensu.ca before February 9, 2009 to arrange forperiodic checks of your unit during the break if you plan to be away for any lengthof time (> 3 days). Please include: your unit address and the dates that you are away.• Check your insurance policy (or your parents) to see whether you are covered if away for morethan 3 days and contact your insurance company as required• Make a list of valuables & record serial numbers• Have your mail held at the post office or have a friend place inside your apartment• Make sure that all your windows are closed, electrical appliances are turned off such as your stoveelements/oven, iron• turn the thermostat to 15C or 60F (if you have access) this will keep fuel consumption down &your plumbing safe from freezing• Make sure unit door is lockedPlease note that Queen’s <strong>University</strong> observes “Family Day” ‐ Monday February 16 as a holidaytherefore our office will be CLOSED.Help us; help you prevent slips and fallsAlong with winter comes snow and ice.Your safety is important. Here are a few tips for consideration whenwalking in icy conditions.To prevent slips and falls when walking in icy conditions:• Proper foot gear will help you keep from slipping and sliding. High heels are out!• Flat or low heel, rubber‐soled shoes with a wide tread design are good for walking on slipperysurfaces.• It is important to take your time and plan ahead• Leave earlier so that you donʹt hurry.• Take no more than half‐stride steps; ensuring one foot is firmly planted before moving the next.Use handrails, where available, particularly on steps and ramps.1
