A Letter fromHis Eminence, Timothy Michael Cardinal DolanWhen I visited families in washed-out neighborhoods andemergency shelters, I observed the extraordinary generosity ofneighbors from near and far as they provided food, clothes, cleaning supplies and, above all, encouragement and solidarity.I witnessed the good Catholic Charities does and how it helpsrebuild lives. Catholic Charities, in close partnership with ourparishes, provided help in a way that created hope — as it doesday in and day out — during difficult times and during suddendisasters. Catholic Charities provided support from Day One.Equally important, Catholic Charities will be there for the longterm to help individuals and families pull their lives back together.Sadly, many New Yorkers’ needs existed before and remainafter the devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy. I have beenprivileged again this year to observe some of the work done byCatholic Charities agencies to meet these needs. Among myfavorite memories is that of children of newcomers in Tarrytownwho were welcomed and encouraged in a caring afterschoolprogram at the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM)Life Center in Sleepy Hollow. The program offers but oneexample from the 90 agencies that make up the network ofthe federation of Catholic Charities agencies in ten countiesof the Archdiocese of New York.As we approach the 100th anniversary of Catholic Charities in1917,I continue to be inspired by the professional high-quality serviceI see. Even more, I am awed by seeing the love of Jesus alive inthose helped and those who provide help, along with the personalconcern and compassion shown in Catholic Charities servicesprovided. During this Year of Faith, we recall that of the threethings that last — faith, hope and love — the greatest of theseis love.Timothy Cardinal Dolan visiting with children for a Christmascelebration at the RSHM Life Center.May Catholic Charities continue to bring love to those in need —non-Catholics and Catholics alike — each made in the imageof God.Faithfully and gratefully in Christ,Dear Friends of Catholic Charities:When Hurricane Sandy struck last autumn, its impactdevastated the lives, homes and businesses ofhundreds of thousands of New Yorkers. But itsdestruction also brought to light the indomitablespirit that prevails among individuals, families, parishes and communities.Timothy Michael Cardinal DolanArchbishop of New YorkAnnual Report 2012www.CatholicCharitiesAnnual.org

A Message from the Chair of the Board of TrusteesCatherine R. KinneyDear Friends:To borrow from Charles Dickens, 2012 was the best of timesand the worst of times. Catholic Charities’ nearly 100 agenciesdrew on close to a century of experience to respond tounprecedented demand. In October, Hurricane Sandy hurled unimaginable devastationon metropolitan New York, particularly on those who live inStaten Island. Catholic Charities’ dedicated staff and volunteershelped speed relief to those who needed it most. New York Stateregistered its vote of confidence in our work by naming CatholicCharities as its partner to provide ongoing case managementfor Sandy survivors. Before Hurricane Sandy struck, the challenging economicenvironment already tested our resources. It spurred a recordnumber of calls for help from the hungry, homeless, physicallyand emotionally challenged and immigrants.Catherine R. Kinney, Chair of the Catholic CharitiesBoard of Trustees. Our success responding to these challenges is due to theunwavering support of Timothy Cardinal Dolan who readilylends his heart and hand to our work. It is also due to theleadership and vision of our Executive Director, MonsignorKevin Sullivan, and the devotion of dedicated staffand volunteers.Catholic Charities could not fulfill its mission without thegenerous philanthropy of our Trustees, the Cardinal’sCommittee for Charity and fellow donors and parishioners.I am so grateful for their generosity. In this photo provided by the Vatican newspaper L’OsservatoreRomano, Pope Francis washes the foot of an inmate atthe juvenile detention center of Casal del Marmo, Rome,Thursday, March 28, 2013.On August 4, 2012, Catholic Charities suffered the loss ofJohn Phelan. Appointed by Cardinal Egan ten years ago asthe first lay chairperson, John, with his love and dedicationto Catholic Charities’ mission, integrity and strong leadershipskills leaves a lasting imprint. After working on Wall Streetwith John for more than 30 years, it is a humbling honorto succeed him as Board Chair. We will work to build on his legacy to create a bright futurefor all New Yorkers. So many depend on Catholic Charitiesfor help and hope. I am excited to be part of this vitalorganization. With warmest regards,Catherine R. KinneyChair, Board of Trusteeswww.catholiccharitiesNY.org

A Report to the Community from the Executive DirectorMonsignor Kevin Sullivanrespond to ensure individuals and families are able to rebuild theirlives. Disaster-response professionals visited parishes to deliverinformation and resources. Volunteers collected and distributedfood and supplies. Neighbors checked on neighbors.Day In & Day OutWhen overwhelming events such as Superstorm Sandy strike, it is easyto forget about our neighbors’ ongoing hardships and crises. ButCatholic Charities remembers. Day in and day out, our federation of 90agencies provides crucial help and hope for thousands of New Yorkers.Take a moment to check out the list of Catholic Charities agenciesthat appears later in this report. Notice their locations and servicesthey provide. In nearly every community throughout the New Yorkmetropolitan area, one or more of these agencies addresses almostevery human need. The Catholic Charities federation protected and nurtured morethan 10,000 children last year through activities such as HeadStart, afterschool programs and foster care. We fed more than6,000,000 meals to hungry New York children and families. We prevented more than 6,500 families from becoming homeless. And we maintained and renovated affordable apartments formore than 2,500 struggling families.Monsignor Kevin Sullivan at a Three Kings Day party held formembers of Obreros Unidos De Yonkers, the Catholic CharitiesDay Laborers of Yonkers program.Hopeful signs indicate our nation’s economy hasbegun to recover. The stock market index has risen. Some new jobs have been created. The housingmarket has improved slightly. Throughout, we havewitnessed the amazing generosity of so manyduring these difficult economic times. But do not be fooled. Many New Yorkers — children, families and individuals — continue to face significanthardships. Families are doubling up. Grandmothersraising grandchildren run out of food before theend of the month. Shelters are packed. People callour offices daily worried about next month’s rent.Children are being raised in precarious conditions.Jobs remain scarce, particularly for older workersand young people entering the workforce. In the midst of these ongoing crises, SuperstormSandy slammed New York. The entire Catholic Charitiesnetwork mobilized immediately and will continue toThose with developmental disabilities and mental illness foundsafety, respect and caring. Teenagers fleeing oppression receivedhelp resettling into safe homes. Immigrants were helped to avoidexploitation, learn English and find jobs.Catholic Charities further expanded its extensive immigrationservices by integrating the International Center and its volunteerbasedconversational English-language programs. These programsutilize the generosity of hundreds of volunteers to provide tens ofthousands of hours of English-language classes and conversationseach year. These services are particularly important in light of theheightened national attention to immigration reform. Not surprisingly, obstacles abound when providing so manyextraordinary services for so many in need, including reducedfunding, reorganization of reimbursements and limited philanthropy. To face these challenges, budgets have been tightened. Staff cost-oflivingincreases have been deferred. Yet thanks to the tremendousdedication of our staff, volunteers and boards of directors,Catholic Charities continues to provide quality services.New InitiativesMore than ever, Catholic Charities agencies look for newopportunities to meet ongoing and emerging needs.Following are just a few highlights of our agencies’ recent initiatives:Annual Report 2012www.CatholicCharitiesAnnual.org

• Grace Institute introduced the “Serving our Female Veterans/Military Families” project that provides employment skillsand job placement for female veterans, families andmilitary spouses.• Astor Services for Children and Families opened a state-ofthe-arttherapeutic residence on its Rhinebeck campus toenhance high-quality services it provides to children diagnosedwith severe emotional disturbance/mental illness.• To preserve a community center and augment services,Catholic Charities Community Services joined with theWashington Heights-based organization, Alianza Dominicana. This Alianza Services division provides afterschool, attendance improvement, dropout prevention and communityhealth assistance programs.• The Federal Office of Refugee Resettlement asked LincolnHall to open its campus to house the unexpected surge ofunaccompanied minors fleeing persecution in their owncountries last summer. Catholic Charities ImmigrationServices also expanded its “Know Your Rights” presentationsand in-depth immigration consultations at Lincoln Halland Children’s Village in Dobbs Ferry to preventexploitation of this vulnerable population.• Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice began working in theSoundview area of the Bronx to rejuvenate park space forchildren and families on the shores of the once heavilypolluted Bronx River. It converted a dangerous, abandonedarea into safe, clean recreation space.A child from the Catholic Charities Alianza Services division.Monsignor Sullivan meets with Catholic Charities personnel that staffedNYC Restore Center at the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin (MIV) Centerin Mount Loretto, Staten Island after Hurricane Sandy.• Dominican Sisters Family Health Services acquired ElizabethSeton Pediatric Long Term Health Care in New York City tocreate one of only two fully licensed, non-profit pediatriclong-term homecare providers for medically frail infantsand youth in New York.Catholic Charities continues to regionalize services throughoutthe Archdiocese. By focusing on the unique needs of differentgeographic regions, Catholic Charities streamlines access toservices and more effectively becomes part of the communitiesit serves. A prime focus is the Hudson Valley counties of theArchdiocese. Already successful in Rockland and Orangecounties, regionalization is under way in Dutchess and UlsterCounties. Thanks to a partnership with Agro-Business ChildDevelopment, a former school was transformed into theCatholic Charities Ulster County Community Service Center.Daycare for children of migrant workers, social services,Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) activities and an emergencyfood pantry are provided in a single setting. In the aftermath of disasters and with the persistence of ongoingneeds, Catholic Charities provides help and creates hope forthose in need, non-Catholics and Catholics alike. CatholicCharities is consistent; we have served those in need fornearly one hundred years. And Catholic Charities is creative, adding projects and enhancing programs to meet new needsand changing demand. We do this because we see the dignityof each person as made in the image of God. And in seeingthis dignity, we bring Jesus’ legacy of love to our work, bringing help and hope to all in need.Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, Executive DirectorCatholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New Yorkwww.catholiccharitiesNY.org

On average, Catholic Charities agenciesof the Archdiocese of New York spend 88 cents of each dollar on program expenses. While many services are provided through government partnerships, substantialprivate philanthropy is necessary to sustain the range and quality of services offeredby Catholic Charities agencies. The size of the individual segments of the chart represents a weighted average of thenumber of people served and the expenditures that hopefully reflects moreaccurately the proportion of services provided in each category. Some services, primarily residential, are very intensive, requiring higher expenditures to serve asmaller number of individuals with special needs. Other categories, such asinformation and referral and emergency meals, serve many more people at a muchlower cost per person.Because of Catholic Charities’ comprehensive approach to assistance, someindividuals and families receive multiple services over a period of time. Some areserved by more than one Catholic Charities agency. It is difficult to know the preciseunduplicated number of those served. Our analysis indicates that Catholic Charitiesserved more than 360,000 different individuals in 2012, approximately the samenumber served in the previous year.Annual Report 2012www.CatholicCharitiesAnnual.org
