Chapter 22.4.13 Low temperature desulphurisationDescriptionIn standard desulphurisation units, the energy required for heating the feed gas originates fromthe fired reformer flue-gas. However, in concepts using an exchanger reformer heated by theeffluent of the secondary reformer, an independent energy source is needed to preheat the feedgas, which may be a gas-fired heater with additional NO x emissions. Using desulphurisationcatalysts with a lower operation temperature can utilise the low temperature steam to heat thefeed gas, instead of direct firing. In this way, NO x emissions from the desulphurisation unit areavoided.Achieved environmental benefits• energy savings• prevention of an additional emission source.Cross-media effectsNone believed likely.Operational dataNo information provided.ApplicabilityAn integrated technique applicable in the desulphurisation section of new and existingautothermal heat exchange reforming plants.EconomicsCost benefits can be assumed.Driving force for implementationCost benefits.References to literature and example plants[3, European Commission, 1997]Large Volume Inorganic Chemicals – Ammonia, Acids and Fertilisers 77
