HEARTS OF IRON DARKEST HOURopposing views. The sliderposition determines whichview the nation tends tofavour, and how strongly itdoes so. We’ll take a closerlook at the meaning of each ina moment.Domestic policies have farreachingimplications on anation. Some will givebonuses or penalties in yourday-to-day activities, whileothers will limit or affect yourdiplomatic or domesticactions, or will alter the natureand quality of your armedforces. The first two slidersdetermine the type ofgovernment that is in powerand will have a limiting effecton the allowable positions ofsome of the other sliders.Further, they determine whichministers will serve on thecabinet and can have asignificant impact on yourrelationship with other nations. While you can examine anynation’s domestic policies, it isyour own country’s policiesthat will be of greatest interestto you. You can easily reviewthese by clicking on yournation’s flag in the top leftcorner of the folder. Hoveringyour mouse over any sliderwill give you details about thecurrent effects that your policysetting has on your nation, and hovering it over the small“+” or “-” buttons at either endwill show the effects ofchanging your policy by onestep in that direction. The domestic policy of yournation can be changed byclicking on either the “+” or “-”button on the end of a slider.Drastic policy changes areimpossible and certain typesof governments will placerestrictions on the allowablepositions of some of thesliders. You are allowed tomake only one policy changeevery two years, and this islimited to adjusting only oneslider by only one step. Sinceeach slider has ten distinctsteps and it may take severalof these to achieve anysignificant change, you shouldcarefully consider your policiesand determine what changewill benefit you most beforemaking a change. The onlyother means of alteringdomestic policy is through thechoices you make when youreceive one of the game’sspecial events, or as a resultof several other importantgame actions.Auto sliderTo the left of each “-” and tothe right of each “+” buttonsthere are checkboxes thatallow to plan in advance theslider moves. When itbecomes possible to movea slider, the game checks ifone of the checkboxes ischecked and automaticallymoves the slider in thatdirection, notifying theplayer of the move. If themove is not allowed(because of constraints orbecause the maximumposition has already beenreached), a messageappears to notify the userthat it had not beenpossible to move the slideras desired. If you don't want toplan the slider movein advance but youwant to check thesituation beforedoing the change, you can use thecheckbox at thebottom of thesliders. If this ischecked, amessage willautomatically notifythe player as soonas a move becomespossible. When yousee this, you canpause the game, goto Diplomacy folder, study the situation andmove your change. Thegame will notify again whena new slider will becomepossible.67
