HEARTS OF IRON DARKEST HOURslightly less time to produceand thus a lower total ICconsumption, and thesubsequent unit will requireeven less time. Until the orderhas been cancelled orcompleted, each unit that youmanufacture will receive agearing bonus that increasesas each is produced. There isa maximum bonus level, though, beyond which therewill be no further reductionsin time and this maximumlevel can be modified by.Note also that provincialassets, no matter whichmethod of ordering them youuse, do not benefit from serialrun gearing bonuses. Moreoverthe gearing bonus isreduced if auto-upgrade hasbeen selected and a newmodel becomes availableduring the serial run: after thecompletion of the current unit, the whole line is upgraded tothe new model, but thisreduces the acquired gearingbonus (by roughly 10%, so it'snot a great loss).Building Provincial Assetsand Using the “QuickOrders” ButtonsProvincial assets are the widevariety of structures that canbe built to make yourprovinces more economicallyproductive, more defensible,or to provide an additionalboost to your research in thefields of rocketry or nuclearscience. Depending on theitem involved, there are threepossible ways that it may beordered, although in mostcases only two of thoseoptions will be available toyou. The exception to that ruleis the AA battery, which mayuse all three methods.Infrastructure, factories, landfortifications and coastalfortifications must have aprovince location specified atthe time that the initial order isplaced for their construction. You may do this either byselecting the desired provinceand then using the appropriateQuick Build button in theProvince Details display, or byright-clicking on the provinceon the main map and selectingthe asset you wish to build.Using either method willinitiate a new production orderfor that item, adding it to thelisting at the bottom of theProvince Details informationpanel, as well as to theProduction Queue. If yousubsequently order additionalitems using either method, they will be added to youroriginal order. All orders forthese items are serial ordersand completed assets willautomatically be deployed tothe province. All other assets may beordered using the right-clickmethod or by placing a simpleProduction Order as describedearlier in this section. Theorder will then be listed in theProduction Queue while it isbeing manufactured. If youuse the right-click method, theasset will automatically deployto the province uponcompletion. If you use theProduction Order method thenthe asset will be “sent” to yourForce Pool to awaitdeployment instead. It willthen force you to spend a bitof extra time placing themlater, but it gives you an addeddegree of flexibility in theirlocation and construction. The Production QueueThe Production Queue allowsyou to quickly review andmanage your currentproduction orders. Each timeyou place a new order, anentry will be added to thequeue’s scrollable list. On theright side of the entry, you willsee some basic details aboutthe unit being produced aswell as an icon that shows itstype and a listing of its nameand basic attack and defencevalues. A tooltip will give youmany more additional info. Ifyou used the quick ordermethod to requisition aprovincial asset, the autodeploymentlocation will beidentified as well.On the left side of each line’sentry is the estimated dateand time of the completion ofthe whole order.Below this is the“productionpercentage”value, indicatingwhetherproduction ofthis item isproceeding atfull speed (this is always at100% unless there is notenough IC available). Underthat you can find the theestimated date and time thatthe current unit will be readyfor deployment. Towards themiddle of the line you will seethe daily IC requirement of theproject. If you have placed anorder for a production run, youwill also see two numbersbelow this. The first is thenumber of units from this orderthat have already been52

HEARTS OF IRON DARKEST HOURcompleted, and the second isthe total number of unitsordered in the production run. Each entry also has a set ofsix buttons that allow you toadjust the order’s priority, thelength of the serial build (the +and – buttons) and CancelDevelopment button (an “X”,which prompts a confermationwindow). Moreover there is acheckbox to toggle on and offauto-upgrade for each entry.Manufacturing new itemsrequires an allocation of IC totheir production and manyitems will also require a onetime“consumption” of manpowerfrom your national pool. While you can still place anorder for an item that you can’tafford, its manufacture will notbegin until sufficient manpowerand resources becomeavailable. Both are allocatedon a priority basis in thequeue, which is always sortedin order of priority, so theorders at the top of the list willalways be allocated to andmanufactured first. You can review an order’sstatus by looking at itsproduction percentage. If thisvalue is 100%, then productionis proceeding normallyand you can expect it to beready on its reported ETAdate, unless something like adrop in available IC happensto affect it in the interim. If it isless than this, production isbeing delayed either by a lackof necessary IC or byinsufficient manpower. Anyorder that isn’t at 100%production will be colourcodedin yellow or orange tomake it easy to spot whenscanning the ProductionQueue. Yellow means thatproduction is only proceedingat a partial rate, while orangeindicates that production hashalted.Manpower is not onlyconsumed by productionorders, but is also withdrawnfrom your national pool whenunits that have sustainedcasualties are beingreinforced. If you lack themanpower for a newproduction order, you havefour alternatives. You cansimply wait until you haveenough manpower in yourpool, at which point theavailable manpower will bewithdrawn automatically andproduction will begin.Increasing its priority in thequeue will ensure that it willreceive the manpower sooner.A second option is to cancelthe order by clicking the “X”button and placing the orderagain once you have enoughmanpower in the national pool.Since manpower is withdrawnwhen an order is first placed, you may have other ordersthat are higher in the queuefor which you’ve already paidthe required manpower cost.Cancelling one of these willreturn the full manpower valueof the order to your pool whichwill then be automaticallyapplied to the next order in thequeue that is waiting formanpower. Your final option isto disband some of the unitsyou have in the field. Thisplaces their manpower backinto the pool, but they will loseany combat experience thatthey have earned.Shortfalls in IC allocation canbe dealt with in a variety ofways. The simple one is toallocate more IC to production, but this will take that IC awayfrom something else, so thismay not necessarily be aviable solution. Building morefactories in your provinces willincrease the total potential ICif you are suffering from a lackof capacity and have lots ofresource reserves, whilefinding additional sources ofnatural resources will increasethe actual IC if you haveenough factories but theyaren’t operating at full capacitydue to a lack of resources.Technological advances mayenhance your factories’ IC orimprove your resourceextraction and conversionrates so you might want tolook at this as an alternative.Your remaining option is tochange the priority of yourorders to ensure that the onesyou need most are producedfirst, and that lower priorityorders are put on the backburner until you have anexcess of IC.The IC that you’ve allocated toproduction is assigned toorders based on their priority,or their position in the queue.Orders at the top of theproduction queue have thehighest priority and will getany new IC that becomesavailable. If you cancel one ormore of the orders that arecurrently running at a 100%production rate, then you willlose any IC and hence theresources that have alreadybeen used by the order, leaving the IC to becomeavailable to the next order in53
