Another method is to usethe Province Hot Button, thefirst of the six buttons, todisplay a scrollable list of yourprovinces. Click on one ofthese to center the map onthat province. The next fourhot buttons (placed after theProvince and the Decisionbutton) can also be used tojump to the location of aspecific land, air or navalforce, or to a combat currentlybeing fought.Message boxes that appearduring play will often include a“goto” button that you can clickto take you quickly to therelevant area of the map. Ifyou know the name of theprovince you would like to goto, you can also press the “\”button on your keyboard andtype the name of the provinceinto the box that appears onyour screen; remember,spelling is important!Many of the pages in theStatistics Folder include a“hyperlink” that will take youdirectly to a province whenyou double-click on its name.That’s quite a few methods…and I’m undoubtedly forgettingsome!ProvincesEach province - andmost importantly, whocontrols it - is thebasic unit of measurefor victory in DarkestHour.There is a distinctionbetween “national”provinces, “owned”provinces and“occupied” provinces.National provinces areones that have historicallybelonged to anation for a long periodof time and where thepopulation is generallycontent with being partof that nation. The canbecome rebellious onlyif the dissent in thecountry is high. Nationalprovinces will be theheart of your economy andprovide you with the bulk ofyour military recruits. Ownedprovinces do not share thissense of nationality, but havebeen under a nation’sdominion long enough thatonly very small pockets ofresistance remain to fight forindependence. They tend togenerate only a modesteconomic benefit to yournation and are usually notinclined to join your armedforces. An occupied provinceis one that has only recentlycome under the control of anation, almost invariably as aresult of a hostile action, andwhere the public not onlyresents its new rulers, but willusually try to actively opposethem. These provinces tend tocontribute very little to youreconomy and are not suitablefor recruiting purposes.Not only can provinces contributevital natural resourcesor industrial capacity to yournation, but they can alsoprovide additional defences orstrategic assets for yourmilitary. Even a quick glanceat a province on the main mapwill reveal important informationabout it, particularly inconjunction with several of thedifferent map viewing modes.Clicking anywhere within aprovince’s borders will changethe display in the informationpanel on the left side of thescreen to provide all theessential details about theprovince. This is the ProvinceInformation Panel.Province NameEach province’s nameappears on the Main Map andin the top left corner of theProvince Information panel.Hovering your mouse over theprovince will also display atooltip with its name, terrain,any special weather con-32
