Multi Agent Systems for Container Terminal Management24

Paper IA Review of Decision Support Systems inContainer Terminal OperationsILawrence HeneseyPaper submitted for journal publicationAbstractAn overview of literature is conducted on research focusing on improving theperformance of container terminals. The growth of containerization has led tonumerous decision problems for container terminal management to considerin operating their container terminals more efficiently, e.g. where to place aship along a quay, scheduling the resources to work a ship, etc. The researchpapers reviewed are summarized and then categorized based on the decisiontype, time frame, and container terminal system employed. The generalconclusion from the results of the survey is that much research has beenfocused on the marine side interface of a container terminal, which leavesroom for further research such as on the land-side interface. In addition, itseems that the use of simulation is becoming the method that is most oftenused to study these types of problems.
