Born in 1952 in Kibbutz Mizra, Mr. Naharin trained at Batsheva<strong>Dance</strong> Company, the School of <strong>American</strong> Ballet, The Juilliard School and Maurice Béjart’s Ballet duXXe Siècle in Brussels, among others. After living in New York from 1978 to 1990, he returned toIsrael, when he was appointed Artistic Director of Batsheva <strong>Dance</strong> Company in 1990. Mr. Naharinhas since choreographed over 20 works exclusively for Batsheva, and he has restaged many of thoseworks for companies around the world. He has also pioneered “Gaga,” a movement language thatemphasizes exploration of sensation with improvisational techniques. Mr. Naharin dedicates the<strong>Ailey</strong> performances of Minus 16 to his late wife Mari Kajiwara (1951–2001), who was a dancer withthe <strong>Ailey</strong> company from 1970 to 1984.“It Must Be True” performed by the John Buzon Trio. A native of Columbia, SouthCarolina, Dove began studying modern dance and ballet with Carolyn Tate, Xenia Chilstowa,Jack Moore, Judith Dunn, Bertram Ross, Helen McGehee and Mary Hinkson. After receiving hisbachelor’s degree from Bennington College, Dove moved to New York City, where he studied withMaggie Black and Alfredo Corvino and performed with José Limón, Mary Antony, Pearl Lang andAnna Sokolow. In 1970 he received a scholarship to the Merce Cunningham School, and later joinedthe Merce Cunningham <strong>Dance</strong> Company. Shortly thereafter, he made his choreographic debut in1979 with the <strong>Alvin</strong> <strong>Ailey</strong> <strong>American</strong> <strong>Dance</strong> <strong>Theater</strong>. ABOUT THE ARTISTSABOUT THE ARTISTSwith Stella Adler. In 1958, he founded <strong>Alvin</strong><strong>Ailey</strong> <strong>American</strong> <strong>Dance</strong> <strong>Theater</strong> to carry out hisvision of a company dedicated to enriching the<strong>American</strong> modern dance heritage and preservingthe uniqueness of the African-<strong>American</strong> culturalexperience. He established the <strong>Alvin</strong> <strong>Ailey</strong><strong>American</strong> <strong>Dance</strong> Center (now The <strong>Ailey</strong> School)in 1969 and formed the <strong>Alvin</strong> <strong>Ailey</strong> RepertoryEnsemble (now <strong>Ailey</strong> II) in 1974. Mr. <strong>Ailey</strong>was a pioneer of programs promoting arts ineducation, particularly those benefiting underservedcommunities. Throughout his lifetime,he was awarded numerous honorary doctoraldegrees, NAACP’s Spingarn Award, the UnitedNations Peace Medal, the <strong>Dance</strong> MagazineAward, the Capezio Award and the Samuel H.Scripps <strong>American</strong> <strong>Dance</strong> Festival Award. In1988, he received the Kennedy Center Honorin recognition of his extraordinary contributionto <strong>American</strong> culture. When Mr. <strong>Ailey</strong> died onDecember 1, 1989, The New York Times said ofhim, “you didn’t need to have known [him] personallyto have been touched by his humanity,enthusiasm and exuberance and his courageousstand for multi-racial brotherhood.”Judith Jamison (Artistic Director Emerita)joined <strong>Alvin</strong> <strong>Ailey</strong> <strong>American</strong> <strong>Dance</strong> <strong>Theater</strong> in1965 and quickly became an international star.Over the next 15 years, Mr. <strong>Ailey</strong> created someof his most enduring roles for her, most notablythe tour-de-force solo Cry. During the 1970sand 1980s, she appeared as a guest artist withballet companies all over the world, starred inthe hit Broadway musical Sophisticated Ladies,and formed her own company, The JamisonProject. She returned to <strong>Alvin</strong> <strong>Ailey</strong> <strong>American</strong><strong>Dance</strong> <strong>Theater</strong> in 1989 when Mr. <strong>Ailey</strong> askedher to succeed him as Artistic Director. In the 21years that followed, she brought the Companyto unprecedented heights—including two historicengagements in South Africa and a 50-cityglobal tour to celebrate the Company’s 50thanniversary. Ms. Jamison is the recipient of numerousawards and honors, among them a primetime Emmy Award, an <strong>American</strong> ChoreographyAward, the Kennedy Center Honor, a NationalMedal of Arts, a “Bessie” Award, the PhoenixAward and the Handel Medallion. She was alsolisted in “The TIME 100: The World’s MostInfluential People” and honored by First LadyMichelle Obama at the first White House <strong>Dance</strong>Series event. As a highly regarded choreographer,Ms. Jamison has created many celebratedworks, including Divining (1984), ForgottenTime (1989), Hymn (1993), HERE…NOW (commissionedfor the 2002 Cultural Olympiad),Love Stories (with additional choreography byRobert Battle and Rennie Harris, 2004) andAmong Us (Private Spaces: Public Places) (2009).Ms. Jamison’s autobiography, Dancing Spirit,was edited by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis andpublished in 1993. In 2004, under Ms. Jamison’sartistic directorship, her idea of “a bigger place,”the permanent home for the <strong>Ailey</strong> company, wasrealized and named after beloved chairman JoanWeill. Ms. Jamison continues to dedicate herselfto asserting the prominence of the arts in ourculture, and she remains committed to promotingthe significance of the <strong>Ailey</strong> legacy—usingdance as a medium for honoring the past, celebratingthe present and fearlessly reaching intothe future.Matthew Rushing (Rehearsal Director) was bornin Los Angeles, <strong>Cal</strong>ifornia. He began his dancetraining with Kashmir Blake in Inglewood,<strong>Cal</strong>ifornia, and later continued his training atthe Los Angeles County High School for theArts. He is the recipient of a Spotlight Awardand a <strong>Dance</strong> Magazine Award, and was named aPresidential Scholar in the Arts. He was a scholarshipstudent at The <strong>Ailey</strong> School and laterbecame a member of <strong>Ailey</strong> II, where he dancedfor a year. During his career, Mr. Rushing hasperformed as a guest artist for galas in Vail,Colorado, as well as in France, Russia, Canada,Austria and Italy. He has performed for presidentsGeorge H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, GeorgeW. Bush and Barack Obama, as well as at the2010 White House tribute to Judith Jamison.During his time with the Company, he has choreographedtwo ballets: Acceptance in Surrender(2005), a collaboration with Hope Boykin andAbdur Rahim-Jackson, and Uptown (2009), atribute to the Harlem Renaissance. She was assistant to the late TalleyBeatty and an original member of Complexions.She was a member of Philadanco and receiveda New York <strong>Dance</strong> and Performance “Bessie”Award. He worked extensively withchoreographer Mark Morris from 2004 to 2011,repeatedly appearing in Mr. Morris’s variousproductions, including as a principal dancer inJohn Adams’s Nixon in China at MetropolitanOpera. He has also performed with JenniferMuller/The Works, Aszure Barton’s Aszure andArtists and Jessica Lang <strong>Dance</strong>. Mr. Segawajoined the Company in 2011.Glenn Allen Sims (Long Branch, New Jersey)began his classical dance training at theAcademy of <strong>Dance</strong> Arts in Red Bank, NewJersey. He attended The Juilliard School underthe artistic guidance of Benjamin Harkarvy. In2004, Mr. Sims was the youngest person to beinducted into the Long Branch High School’sDistinguished Alumni Hall of Fame. He hasbeen seen in several network television programsincluding BET Honors, Dancing with theStars and Today. In 2010, Mr. Sims taught as amaster teacher in Ravenna, Italy, for “<strong>Dance</strong> UpRavenna,” sponsored by International <strong>Dance</strong>Association, and performed in the White Housetribute to Judith Jamison. He has performedfor the King of Morocco and is a certified ZenaRommett Floor-Barre® instructor. In summer2011, Mr. Sims wrote a featured guest blog for<strong>Dance</strong> Magazine. Mr. Sims joined the Companyin 1997.Linda Celeste Sims (Bronx, New York) beganher dance training at Ballet HispanicoSchool of <strong>Dance</strong> and is a graduate of LaGuardiaHigh School of the Performing Arts.
