REFRIGERANT FLOW DIAGRAMSCooling Only (Figure 1) Heat Recovery (Figure 2)Low pressure liquid refrigerant enters the cooler and isevaporated and superheated by the heat energy absorbed fromthe chilled water passing through the cooler shell. Low pressurevapour enters the compressor where pressure and superheatare increased. Heat is rejected via the air cooled condenser coiland fans. The fully condensed and subcooled liquid refrigerantthen enters the expansion valve where pressure reduction andfurther cooling takes place before returning to the cooler.During heat recovery operation the refrigerant passes to thewater cooled condenser instead of the air cooled condenser. The high pressure superheated refrigerant vapour enters thecondenser shell, where heat is rejected to the warm water in thetubes, and is condensed. High pressure liquid refrigerant thenpasses through the expansion valve, where pressure reductionand cooling takes place, before returning to the cooler. Excessheat is rejected at the air cooled condenser.TABLE 3FOULING FACTORSTABLE 4ALTITUDE FACTORSCOOLERFouling Factor m² °C/kW Capacity Factor Comp. DATA REQUIREDTo select a YORK YCAJ/YDAJ glycol chiller, the followinginformation is required.1. Required cooling capacity.2. Design cooler water/glycol entering and leavingtemperatures.3. Design water/glycol flow rate.4. Design condenser entering air temperature. This willnormally be the design summer ambient air temperatureunless location or other factors have an influence.5. Altitude above sea level.6. Design cooler fouling factor.7. Static pressure resistance against condenser entering andleaving airflow where ducts, louvres, attenuators, etc., areused, at full unit air flow.Note: Items 1, 2 and 3 must be linked by the following formulae:Capacity (kW) = Range (°C) x Flow (litre/sec)Glycol FactorWhere:Range = Entering liquid temperature - leaving liquid temp.To determine Glycol Factor refer to Figure 3 for ethylene glycolor Figure 5 for propylene glycol. For the design leavingtemperature look up the recommended concentration of glycoland the Glycol Factor at this concentration. This is the minimumconcentration which should be used for the design leavingtemperature. If a higher concentration is desired the GlycolFactor can be determined from Figure 4 for the ethylene glycolor Figure 6 for propylene glycol.SELECTION METHOD1. Determine the correct model of chiller by selecting the modelwhich most closely matches the required capacity at thedesign conditions of leaving glycol temperature and enteringair temperature.2. Apply the relevant correction factors for fouling factor, altitudeand fan application (Tables 3 to 5) and glycol concentration(Figures 3 or 5), to the capacity and power values from thecapacity tables. Ensure the corrected capacity is stillsufficient for requirements.3. Using the corrected capacity of the selected chiller, adjust thedesign temperature range, or flow rate, to balance theformulae shown in “Data Required”.4. Physical and electrical data can now be determined fromTables 11 to 13.5. Always re-check that selections fall within the designlimitations specified. (See Table 2).GLYCOL SAMPLE SELECTIONSAMPLE SELECTIONA chiller is required for cooling propylene glycol from 4°C to-1°C having a required duty of 380 kW.The following design conditions apply:Fouling Factor:0.088m °C/kWAltitude:1200 mAmbient air: 30°CGlycol Strength:27% w/wFor propylene glycol leaving at - 1°C the recommendedconcentration from Figure 5 is 27%. The specified strength istherefore suitable. From ratings using an "Ethylene Glycol" temperature of “-2°C”leaving temperature (Propylene Glycol capacity = EthyleneGlycol capacity at 1°C lower temperature) at 30°C air aYCAJ 77SU7 gives 397 kW capacity and 140 kW compressorpower. (see Table 9).From the design fouling factor, corrections of Capacity x 0.987and power x 0.995 apply. See Table 3.From the design altitude, corrections of Capacity x 0.973 andpower x 1.020 apply. See Table 4.From the design glycol strength, corrections of Capacity x 1.02and power x 1.008 apply, (Interpolation from Table 10).Applying these factors to the selection: YCAJ 77SU7Capacity= 397 x 0.987 x 0.973 x 1.02 = 389 kWCompressor Power= 140 x 0.995 x 1.02 x 1.008 = 143.2 kWFor the glycol concentration specified and a leaving temperatureof - 1°C, Figure 8 shows a Glycol Factor of 0.243. The flow ratecan be determined, therefore, from the formula shown in "DataRequired".389 kW = (4 - (-1)) x Flow (l/s)0.243Flow rate = 389 x 0.243 = 18.9 (l/s)5This satisfies the Operating Limits.Cooler pressure drop can be found by taking the value of waterpressure drop using line C, see Figure 9, for a YCAJ 77SU7 andmultiplying by the correction factor (Figure 7), for 25% strengthand a mean temperature of 1.5°C,i.e. (4 + (-1))/2°C:33 kPa x 1.25 = 41.2 kPaPage G.48Doc. If HighPressure Fans are included, instead ofStandard Fan , add data from item 8.If Low Noise Fans are included, deductdata from item 11. Data in brackets are forYDAJ chillers. Total maximum kW is at12°C leaving chilled water and 45°Cambient. For nominal kW at 6°C leavingchilled water and 35°C ambient multiplythe result by 0.83.Single Electrical Connection amps(Item 3).This accessory option is a single electricalconnection on YCAJ units, rather than thestandard two inputs for each of thecompressor/ fan systems. On YDAJ chillers there are two controlpanels and item 3 is the electrical input ateach panel if the single electricalconnection accessory option is used.Standard units have four electricalconnections each serving a separatecompressor/ fan system. If high pressure or low noise fans areincluded, add or deduct, as appropriate, data from items 9 or 12 for YCAJ chillersand for each of the two single inputs onYDAJ chillers. Use the resulting data tosize electrical cables per panel.System Electrical Inputs (items 4 & 5)For standard chillers, where item 3 is notincluded, YCAJ chillers will have oneinput from each of items 4 and 5, YDAJchillers will have two inputs from each ofitems 4 and 5.If High Pressure or Low Noise Fans areincluded add or deduct, as appropriate, data from items 10 or 13 to eachcompressor/ fan system. Use theresulting data to size electrical cables persystemStarting amps (Items 6 & 7)Starting amps are for the largestcompressor. All currents are at nominal400 volts. For 380 volt supplies (outsideEurope), multiply amps by 1.05.ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONSStandard Units and Units withIsolatorsAll units require two off 3 phaseseparately fused 3 wire supplies plusearth. One supply should be connected toeach of the two power supply sections inthe control panel. Also required is a separate supply, connected to customer terminals in thecentre common power section of thecontrol panel. This supply is for the controlsystem and should be 220/240V singlephase on 4 wire units or optionally twophases (380/415V) on units fitted with a 3wire supply kit.Units with Common Input SupplyUnits fitted with common supply inputaccessory require only one 3 phase 4 wiresupply plus earth, per control panel, oroptionally one 3 phase 3 wire supply plusearth on units fitted with a 3 wire supplykit.ALL SOURCES OF SUPPLY TOTHE UNIT MUST BE TAKEN FROMONE MAIN ISOLATOR NOTSUPPLIED BY YORKPower Section Volt Free ContactsAll wiring to the power section voltage freecontacts require a supply provided by thecustomer maximum voltage 240 volts. The customer MUST take particular carederiving the supplies for the voltage freeterminals with regard to a common pointof isolation. Thus, these circuits whenused MUST be fed via the common pointof isolation so the voltage to these circuitsis removed when the common point ofisolation to the unit is opened. Thiscommon point of isolation is not suppliedby York. The York voltage free contactsare rated at 125VA.All inductive devices (relays) switch bythe York voltage free contacts must havetheir coil suppressed using standard R/Csuppressors.Logic SectionAll wiring to the logic section terminalblock is low voltage and must be run inscreened cable, with the screen earthedat panel end only. Run screen cableseparately from mains cable to avoidelectrical noise pick-up. Use gland plateon the back of the control panel directlyinto the logic section to avoid mainscables. If the cable exceeds 7.5 metresuse the Micropanel Isolator kit accessory. The voltage free contacts must besuitable for 24 Vdc (gold contactrecommended). If voltage free contactforms part of a relay or contactors, the coilof this device MUST be suppressed byusing a standard R/C suppressor. Theabove precautions MUST be taken toavoid electrical noise which could cause amalfunction or damage to the units and itscontrols.Page G.62Doc. No. PC110/11.01/GB
