ABOUT PUBLIC SAFETY CANADAAs Canada’s lead department for public safety, Public Safety Canada (PS)works with five agencies <strong>and</strong> three review bodies. They are united in asingle portfolio <strong>and</strong> report to the same minister. The result is betterintegration among federal organizations dealing with national security,emergency management, law enforcement, corrections, crime prevention<strong>and</strong> borders.PS AGENCIES:Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) - facilitates legitimate crossbordertraffic <strong>and</strong> supports economic development while stopping people<strong>and</strong> goods that pose a potential threat to Canada.Canadian <strong>Security</strong> Intelligence Service (CSIS) - investigates <strong>and</strong> reportson activities that may pose a threat to the security of Canada. CSIS also providessecurity assessments.Correctional Service Canada (CSC) - is responsible for managing offenderssentenced to two years or more in federal correctional institutions <strong>and</strong>under community supervision.National Parole Board (NPB) - is an independent decision making bodythat grants, denies or revokes parole for inmates in federal prisons. NPBhelps protect society by facilitating the timely reintegration of offendersinto society as law-abiding citizens.Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) - enforces Canadian laws,prevents crime <strong>and</strong> maintains peace, order <strong>and</strong> security.PS MANDATE:To keep Canadians safe from a range of risks such as natural disasters,crime <strong>and</strong> terrorism. To do this, Public Safety Canada coordinates <strong>and</strong> supportsthe efforts of federal organizations ensuring national security <strong>and</strong> thesafety of Canadians. PS also work with other levels of government, firstresponders, community groups, the private sector <strong>and</strong> other nations.PS PROGRAMS:• EMERGENCY MANAGEMENTPS is responsible for developing <strong>and</strong> implementing federal policies foremergency management.
