What to do… for INFANTS (Newborn to age 1)• If infant stops breathing, have someone call an ambulance.• Turn infant face down on your forearm <strong>and</strong> support itshead with that h<strong>and</strong> -- hold at angle so it’s head is lowerthan chest. (May want to brace arm holding infant againstyour thigh!)• Give 5 back blows between infants’ shoulder blades withheel of your other h<strong>and</strong>.• Turn infant over so it is facing up on your forearm (still atan angle so head lower than chest) -- use your first twofingers to find center of the breastbone on infant’s chest.• Give 5 thrusts to infant’s chest using only 2 fingers! (Eachthrust should be 1/2 to 1 inch [1 to 2.5 cm] deep!)• Repeat steps until object is coughed up or infant passesout.If INFANT passes out:• Check for object in the infant’s mouth <strong>and</strong> try to clear itout with your fingers.• Begin Rescue Breathing … <strong>and</strong> remember, cover bothmouth <strong>and</strong> nose on Infants! (see BREATHING PROB-LEMS)If no air gets in INFANT during Rescue Breathing:• Turn infant face down on your forearm again supportingits head with that h<strong>and</strong> -- hold at angle so head lower thanchest.• Give 5 back blows between infants’ shoulder blades withheel of your other h<strong>and</strong>.• Turn infant over so it is facing up on your forearm <strong>and</strong> useyour first two fingers to find center of the breastbone oninfant’s chest.• Give 5 thrusts to infant’s chest using only 2 fingers!
