IF INDOORS - If near blast, stay put if home or building is not damaged.If fires are spreading, cover nose <strong>and</strong> mouth <strong>and</strong> find shelter in a basementor building further away. Then ...• Close doors, windows <strong>and</strong> fireplace damper <strong>and</strong> turn offair conditioner, ventilation fans, furnace <strong>and</strong> other intakessince they can pull in air or fallout from outside.• Go to an underground shelter or make an expedient shelterusing as much shielding as possible (like furniture,appliances, books, boxes of dirt, etc.) in your basement orthe center of room or building.• Grab your water, food <strong>and</strong> supplies <strong>and</strong> have radiationdetection devices ready to monitor radiation levels.• Keep a battery-operated radio with you to hear updates<strong>and</strong> stay inside until it is safe to go out.IF OUTDOORS - Cover mouth <strong>and</strong> nose with a cloth <strong>and</strong> take shelterimmediately. Remember ... distance, shielding <strong>and</strong> time.IF IN A VEHICLE - Keep windows up, close vents, use “recirculating” air<strong>and</strong> listen to radio for updates. If possible, drive away from site. If you can’tget away <strong>and</strong> you are near the blast area, immediately seek shelter fromdeadly fallout <strong>and</strong> fires.Things to watch out for:• fallout - can arrive 10-20 minutes after the blast -- lookslike gray s<strong>and</strong> or gritty ash <strong>and</strong> is very radioactive the firstfew days so find heavy shielding. Fallout can be carried bywinds for hundreds of miles.• fires - gas lines or chemicals may cause them to spread• flying & falling objects - the blast <strong>and</strong> shock waves canshatter windows <strong>and</strong> hurl debris or body parts like missiles• weak structures, floors or stairs - be careful since theycould have been weakened or damaged by blastsListen - Turn on radio or TV (if working) to learn projected paths of falloutor fires.
