PrefaceThe activities between IGIDR and CSH are beingcoordinated by Prof. Vinod K. Sharma of IGIDR andDr. Basudeb Chaudhuri, Director of CSH, New Delhi.During the year 2008-09, institute hosted visits of someprominent French and Indian academicians. Dr. PatrickCriqui from CNRS in Grenoble and a well knowneconomist in the field of Energy and SustainableDevelopment gave a talk at the institute under theIGIDR-CSH-French Scientific Section Event. Dr.Nicolas Buclet gave a talk under the French ScienceToday programme. Dr. Claude Moreau, Attach forScience and Technology, Mumbai, Embassy of Francein India. The CSH is also financially supporting someacademic events such as the International Symposiumfor a Sustainable Future, to be organised by theinstitute in January, 2010. Several other activities,events and projects have been planned, which are in theprocess of being worked out in the near future underthe IGIDR-CSH collaboration.Other ActivitiesIGIDR has also been active in various capacitybuilding and outreach activities. The Centre for theStudy of Society and Secularism and the IGIDRorganised a joint seminar last year on Women'sEmpowerment. The seminar co-ordinator was Dr. SrijitMishra.With the aim of creating a more intellectuallystimulating ambience on campus, the Brown-BagSeminar series (BBSS) was started in August 2008. Itis meant to be an informal platform, for both studentsand faculty members to present their work in progress.This seminar is convened by Dr. Shubhro Sarkar.IGIDR has now started organising a distinguishedlecture series under which eminent economists areinvited to give a thematic lecture to the faculty and thestudents. Two such distinguished visitors were Dr.Arjun Sengupta, Chairman, the National Commissionfor Enterprises in the Unorganized Sector (NCEUS)and Prof. Y.K. Alagh (Chairman IRMA). The Institutehas also put in place a system of block seminarswhereby distinguished economists and statisticians areinvited to give a series of about four lectures on aunified theme for the benefit of faculty and students.The Institute has already strengthened its outreachactivities by introducing various initiatives such asVisiting Students Programme, Visiting ScholarsProgramme, and Post Doctoral Programme.ConclusionThe faculty, students and staff of IGIDR are united intheir commitment to move ahead on the path ofacademic excellence with a balanced orientationbetween economic theory and practice and socialcommitments.The 2008-09 Annual Report is intended to take stock ofour activities throughout the year in order to facilitatevaluable communication with the wider academiccommunity, policy makers and practitioners in thefield.I have pleasure in placing this document in the publicdomain.Dilip NachaneDirectorvi Annual Report 2008-09
Organisation of IGIDRBackground, Aims and ObjectivesThe Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR)is an advanced research institute established in 1987, inMumbai, by the Reserve Bank of India, for the study ofnational and global issues relating to economic development.The Institute is recognised as a Deemed University underSection 3 of the UGC Act. The primary objectives of theInstitute are to:i) promote and conduct research on development from a broadinter-disciplinary perspectiveii) serve as a centre for promoting cooperative endeavour andinteraction between research scholars and institutions inIndia and abroadiii) undertake any other project or activity which the Institutemay usefully carry out for the furtherance of developmentand social welfare.Board of ManagementThe present composition of the Board of Management isas follows:1.
