Time‐dependent Layout Methods For Visualization Of Dynamic NetworksPeterson, ElishaVisualizationVisualization, Dynamic Networks, Longitudinal Social NetworkWED.PM2Typical techniques for visualizing changes in dynamic networks involve either keeping nodes in fixed positions throughout or interpolating between snapshotsof static network layouts. In the first case, the visualization does not make use of information about how the graph changes over time, while in the second casethe resulting animations can be difficult for the user to interpret because the positions of nodes can change dramatically from one frame to the next. Weintroduce techniques for generating layouts of dynamic graphs that make explicit use of the time component in the data, leading to a smoother layout thathighlights changes in network structure while ensuring that node positions do not change too much over time. The techniques are illustrated using the IkeNetsocial network of military officers, and the results are compared to other longitudinal visualization techniques.
