Chapter 26 Using Storage Providers• Alarms indicate a change in storage system availability. For example, when you use profile-basedstorage management, you can specify virtual machine storage requirements. When changes tounderlying storage occur that might violate the storage requirements of the virtual machine, an alarmgets triggered. For more information about events and alarms, see the vSphere Monitoring and Performance documentation.Thin-provisioned LUNs have special reporting requirements. For information about space monitoring onthin-provisioned LUNs, see “Array Thin Provisioning and VMFS Datastores,” on page 249.Register Storage ProvidersTo establish a connection between the vCenter Server and a storage provider, you must register the storageprovider.NOTE If you use Virtual SAN, the storage providers for Virtual SAN are registered and appear on the list ofstorage providers automatically. See “View Virtual SAN Storage Providers,” on page 189. If fortroubleshooting purposes you need to remove or unregister the Virtual SAN storage providers, you can usethis procedure to register them manually. Make sure to register a separate storage provider for each host inthe cluster.PrerequisitesVerify that the storage provider component is installed on the storage side and obtain its credentials fromyour storage administrator.Procedure1 Browse to the vCenter Server in the vSphere Web Client navigator.2 Click the Manage tab, and click Storage Providers.3 Click the Register a new storage provider icon.4 Type connection information for the storage provider, including the name, URL, and credentials. For the Virtual SAN storage provider, enter a separate URL for each host that participates in the cluster.http://host_ip:8080/version.xml, where host_ip is the actual IP of the host.NOTE The Virtual SAN storage provider is a non-SSL provider. This means that the traffic betweenSMS and the Virtual SAN storage provider does not need to be secured by a valid user name andpassword. However, when registering the Virtual SAN provider, you must provide some values for theUser Name and Password fields because these fields are mandatory on the registration dialog box. Anyvalues are accepted because the Virtual SAN storage provider does not perform any real validation andignores these credentials.5 (Optional) To direct the vCenter Server to the storage provider certificate, select the Use StorageProvider Certificate option and specify the certificate's location. If you do not select this option, a thumbprint of the certificate is displayed. You can check thethumbprint and approve it.This step is not valid for Virtual SAN and is optional for all other types of storage providers.6 Click OK to complete the registration. The vCenter Server has registered the storage provider and established a secure SSL connection with it.VMware, Inc. 255
