Using Storage Providers 26vSphere uses storage providers to integrate with external physical storage and storage abstractions. Whenusing storage providers, vSphere can gain a better insight into resources and obtain comprehensive andmeaningful storage data. vSphere can also communicate to storage any requirements that are based onstorage policies you define for virtual machines. The storage provider is a software plug-in developed by a third party through the vStorage APIs for StorageAwareness (VASA). The storage provider component is typically installed on the storage side and acts as aserver in the vSphere environment. vCenter Server uses storage providers to retrieve information aboutstorage and to query storage resources. This information helps storage policy based management (SPBM)make decisions about virtual disk placement and compliance. For information about whether your storage supports the storage provider plug-ins, contact your storagevendor. If your storage supports storage providers, use the vSphere Web Client to register and manage each storageprovider component. This chapter includes the following topics:• “Storage Providers and Storage Data Representation,” on page 253• “Storage Provider Requirements and Considerations,” on page 254• “Storage Status Reporting,” on page 254• “Register Storage Providers,” on page 255• “Securing Communication with Storage Providers,” on page 256• “View Storage Provider Information in the vSphere Web Client,” on page 256• “Unregister Storage Providers in the vSphere Web Client,” on page 256• “Update Storage Providers in the vSphere Web Client,” on page 257Storage Providers and Storage Data RepresentationThe vCenter Server communicates with the storage provider to obtain information that the storage providercollects from available storage devices. The vCenter Server can then display the storage data in thevSphere Web Client.Information that the storage provider supplies can be divided into the following categories:• Storage topology. Information about physical storage elements appears on the Storage Views tab. Itincludes such data as storage arrays, array IDs, and so on.VMware, Inc. 253
