Chapter 19 Working with Virtual SAN4 View the summary information and click Next.5 Assign an existing or a new license key and click Next.6 (Optional) Enable lockdown mode to prevent remote users from logging directly into the host. You can configure this option later by editing the Security Profile in host settings.7 Select what to do with the host’s virtual machines and resource pools.• Put this host’s virtual machines in the cluster’s root resource poolvCenter Server removes all existing resource pools of the host. The virtual machines in the host’shierarchy are al attached to the root. Because share allocations are relative to a resource pool, youmight have to manually change a virtual machine’s shares , which destroys the resource poolhierarchy.• Create a resource pool for this host’s virtual machines and resource poolsvCenter Server creates a top-level resource pool that becomes a direct child of the cluster and addsall children of the host to that new resource pool. You can type a name for that new top-levelresource pool. The default is Grafted from .8 Review the settings and click Finish. The host is added to the cluster.Place a Member of Virtual SAN Cluster in Maintenance ModeBefore you shut down, reboot, or disconnect a host that is a member of a Virtual SAN cluster, you must putit in maintenance mode. When you place a host in maintenance mode, you can select a specific evacuationmechanism.PrerequisitesCheck that your environment has the capabilities required for the option you select.Procedure1 Right-click the host and select Enter Maintenance Mode.2 Select one of the evacuation modes and click OK.OptionEnsure accessibilityFull data evacuationNo data evacuationDescriptionThis is the default option. When you power off or remove the host fromthe cluster, Virtual SAN ensures that all accessible virtual machines on thishost remain accessible. Typically, only partial data evacuation is required.Select this option if you take the host out of the cluster temporarily, forexample, to install upgrades, and plan to have the host back in the cluster. This option is not appropriate when you permanently remove the hostfrom the cluster.Virtual SAN evacuates all data to other hosts in the cluster. This optionresults in the largest amount of data transfer and consumes the most timeand resources. Select this option if you plan to remove the hostpermanently.NOTE The host will not enter maintenance mode if a virtual machineobject that has data on the host is not accessible and cannot be fullyevacuated.Virtual SAN does not evacuate any data from this host. If you power off orremove the host from the cluster, some virtual machines might becomeunaccessible.VMware, Inc. 187
