Chapter 16 Working with DatastoresStorage FilteringvCenter Server provides storage filters to help you avoid storage device corruption or performancedegradation that can be caused by an unsupported use of storage devices. These filters are available bydefault.Table 16‐4. Storage FiltersFilter Name Description KeyVMFS FilterRDM FilterSame Host andTransports FilterHost Rescan FilterFilters out storage devices, or LUNs, that are alreadyused by a VMFS datastore on any host managed byvCenter Server. The LUNs do not show up ascandidates to be formatted with another VMFSdatastore or to be used as an RDM.Filters out LUNs that are already referenced by anRDM on any host managed by vCenter Server. TheLUNs do not show up as candidates to be formattedwith VMFS or to be used by a different RDM.If you need virtual machines to access the sameLUN, the virtual machines must share the sameRDM mapping file. For information about this typeof configuration, see the vSphere Resource Managementdocumentation.Filters out LUNs ineligible for use as VMFS datastoreextents because of host or storage typeincompatibility. Prevents you from adding thefollowing LUNs as extents:• LUNs not exposed to all hosts that share theoriginal VMFS datastore.• LUNs that use a storage type different from theone the original VMFS datastore uses. Forexample, you cannot add a Fibre Channel extentto a VMFS datastore on a local storage device.Automatically rescans and updates VMFS datastoresafter you perform datastore management operations. The filter helps provide a consistent view of allVMFS datastores on all hosts managed by vCenterServer.NOTE If you present a new LUN to a host or acluster, the hosts automatically perform a rescan nomatter whether you have the Host Rescan Filter onor off.config.vpxd.filter.vmfsFilterconfig.vpxd.filter.rdmFilterconfig.vpxd.filter.SameHostAndTransportsFilterconfig.vpxd.filter.hostRescanFilterTurn off Storage Filters in the vSphere Web ClientWhen you perform VMFS datastore management operations, vCenter Server uses default storage protectionfilters. The filters help you to avoid storage corruption by retrieving only the storage devices that can beused for a particular operation. Unsuitable devices are not displayed for selection. You can turn off thefilters to view all devices.PrerequisitesBefore making any changes to the device filters, consult with the VMware support team. You can turn offthe filters only if you have other methods to prevent device corruption.Procedure1 Browse to the vCenter Server in the vSphere Web Client object navigator.VMware, Inc. 147
