The line will importenough energy to powerabout 650,000 homes and improveoverall reliability of theregion’s transportation systemand add protection againstfuture transmission emergenciesthat could lead to criticalemergency shortages.“Here’s the reality about thethree R’s,” said County SupervisorDianne Jacob during thepublic meeting, “A massiveextension chord through ourfire prone back country doesnot equal greater reliability, itequals perilous danger.”Jacob said in my discussionwith SDG&E the utility usedthe 2003 Cedar Fire as aninteresting argument for Sunrise.SDG&E said Sunrise wasneeded because if the existingsouth west Powerlink was togo down in a fire, Sunrisecould endure reliability.SDG&E down played thelikelihood of the region havingtwo massive fires at thesame time. The argumentwas debatable until October2007. It turned out SDG&Ewas right. WE didn’t have twomassive fires at the same time,we had seven.SDG&E stated that access toclean renewable energy wouldcome through sources such aswind, solar and geothermallocated in the imperial valleyand will be connected to whatcould become the largest solarenergy facility in the world. The line will help SDG&Emeet the state’s clean energypolicies requiring increaseduse of renewable power andreduce green house emissions.Supervisor Dianne Jacobsaid there is enough capacityon the existing southwest powerlinkto bring wind, solar andgeothermal energy from theImperial Valley in the regionwithout building Sunrise.SDG&E’s own testimonyreveals the utility can meetCalifornia’s renewable mandatewith out building Sunrise. If SDG&E is as committed torenewable energy as it claimswhy did the company lobbyagainst increasing the state’srenewable mandate? Jacobwanted to know. The third R- Reduce energycosts, according to SDG&E theSunrise Powerlink will generateover 115 million per year in netbenefits by reducing expensivetransmission system congestioncosts and reduce subsidiespaid to local, aging powerplants that are now expensiveto operate.Supervisor Jacob stated:Here is the reality about reducedcost. Repeatedly wehave seen the alleged financialbenefits of Sunrise drop dramaticallybecause of SDG&E’sown miscalculations, matherrors and faulty assumptionsabout power plants.First it was $447 million thendropped to $204 million andagain dropped to $129 million.Less than one quarter ofthe lines original cost savingsestimates.By approving Sunrise Californiawill be building a billiondollar movement to the past.Supervisor Jacob said sheremains steadfastly opposedto the project in its entirety.“Don’t give up, I’m with you,”she told the audience. TheSDG&E open house gavethose in attendance a chanceto visit the many tables anddisplays which outlined theSunrise Powerlink.More than 100 route alternativeswere considered duringthe nearly four year process.A Southern route that avoidedthe Anza-Borrego Desert statePark was emerged as an optionin late 2006. Once the routewas designated for consideration, notices went out toresidents and property ownersalong the route which includedLakeside. Property ownerswithin 300 ft. of the routeswere notified by mail as wellas interested parties includingLakeside Planning Group andLakeside Fire Department, said SDG&E representativeDon Parent.Members of the LakesidePlanning Group and the lakesideFire Department alongwith a number of interestedparties say they did not receiveany notice. After an emotional meetingof the Lakeside PlanningGroup on February 18 whereresidents of El Monte valleyexpressed their outrage overSDG&E’s plan to place 150foot towers across the valley, the residents have decided withthe guidance of SupervisorDianne Jacob that they mustcome together as a cohesivegroup if they want to stopSDG&E. There are severallaw suites in the works whichresidents are looking into.Lakeside residents should beaware other areas of Lakesidewill be affected by the SunrisePowerlink. Mustangfans will be pleased, and thosenot familiar with the Mustangwill love the new 2010 model. It doesn’t’ make any differenceif one is just looking fora fun commuter or a “balls tothe wall” hot rod — Mustangdelivers. The first thing notable isthe styling, not to far from theoriginal but a few more sharpThe 2010 Mustang packs plenty of ponies under the hood.Photo by Dave StallRAINS MAKE FOR EASY GROUNDBREAKINGSTART PLANTING TODAY!edges to enhance the look.In fact, the only sheet metalleftover from the previousMustang is the roof panel.Buyers still have the option fora V8 and a five speed manualtransmission. One can have a4.0-liter V6 that puts out 210horsepower and 240 poundfootof torque then the 4.6-literthat produces 315 horsepowerand 325 foot pounds of torqueall backed by either a fivespeed automatic or a fivespeed manual that will do 15mile per gallon in the city and25 miles per gallon on theopen road. The V6 will get acouple more miles. The interior is a lot like Mustangsfrom the past but withupgrades that all Mustang enthusiasthave been waiting for— heated seats, a one piece softinstrument panel constructed inseamless TPO (ThermoplasticOlefin) skin. The center consolehouses Sync along with911 Assist and a vehicle healthreport. The navigation workedperfectly and it looked like itbelonged in the new dash, thegauges looked retro especiallyat night. How does it drive? Wellit is a Mustang and thatshould say it all. The ridewas quiet and had plentyof get up and go (I had the4.6-liter engine with a fivespeed automatic). The backseats were the typical Mustangback seats, but plentyof room in the trunk. Thecar came with all the bellsand whistles, power windowand door locks, A/C. a greatsound system and eye poppingstyling.I’m not sure about the GoldBurst color I had but otherthan that I had a blast toolingaround San Diego.Pricing had not been set asof this article, but I assume itwill start in the low $20,000range and go up accordingto your dream list. MARCH 5, 2009 GAZETTE PAGE 92010 Ford Mustang at a glanceInterior is similar toMustangs of the past, with upgrades.Mustang fans willbe happy with the2010 Mustang.Plenty of truck room.Photos by Dave StallBumper-to-Bumper with Dave StallDave: I just bought a new 2008 Ford F250 for my wife(She tows a horse trailer) and the finance managerasked me if I wanted to buy Gap Insurance. I said no but I gotto wondering when did dealerships start selling auto insurance? What is Gap Insurance? Once I said no she didn’t bother to tryand explain what it was. I read your column all the time and wedid purchase the extended warranty. We plan to make this ourlast truck! Fred, Santee.Fred: Congratulations on your new truck and happy to seeyou bought the service contract. Gap Insurance is just like anextended warranty, it is additional insurance in the event thetruck was involved in an accident shortly after purchase. Theway it works is like this. Lets say the truck cost you $35,000and a week or two later it was broadsided and the insurancecompany totaled the truck but when they looked up the valueit may be only worth $33,000 or less then when the insurancecompany pays off the truck to the lending agency you would beresponsible for the difference. Gap Insurance, if purchased willpick up the difference between what the pay off is and what thetruck is worth. Gap Insurance is based on your credit historyand your driving record.Dave: You’re not going to believe this story but I’m going tocommute to Mesa Arizona once a month. The company will payfor my gas and car but I’m responsible for any damage done tothe car. I have not made my first trip yet in fact I won’t get my carfor another month. I was taking to my Dad about my new joband he said I should get a vinyl or leather bra for the nose of mynew car because of the sand storms and if I hit one it will surlydamage the paint. The problem is I can’t find one anywhere. Doyou have any suggestions? My new vehicle will be a Chevy HHRpanel truck. Thanks for your help. Cindy, Escondido.Cindy: Wow, I thought I drove a lot, hope you activated theXM Radio. The reason you can’t find vinyl or leather nose coversis because of the damage they do to the paint job, if not securedproperly (Which they never are) they will rub the paint at freewayspeeds and in the sun your paint will naturally fade except for thepaint under the nose cover so when you trade the vehicle backin and remove the cover you now have a two-tone nose. Whatis available today is a product called Clear Bra, it is transparentso you won’t get the fading problem, it sticks to the paint soyou won’t get rubbing and if it gets damaged you can removeit and have a new piece applied. Plus not only do they do thefront end of your vehicle but they can protect the back sides ofyour outside mirrors plus they have kits for the roof, wheel wellopenings rear bumper, A pillars and a lot more.
