REMEDIATION SERVICES
The threat of abandoned explosives blight post-conflict areas— periods of armed
engagement have resulted in the presence of explosive remnants of war in over 60
countries. There are an estimated 70 to 120 million remnant mines hidden in former
conflict zones injuring or killing 150 people every day, jeopardizing agricultural land use,
accessibility to potable water sources, and civilian safety. RONCO Demining,
Unexploded Ordnance Clearance, and Mine Action Services
comprehensively restore post-conflict battle areas, enabling the resettlement of
refugees, the restitution of national infrastructure, and the stabilization of peace
keeping efforts.

Peru
Demining and Training In Peru
In 2008, RONCO partnered with CONTRAMINAS to
clear land along the northern border of Ecuador.
Based in Lima , the team established satellite
training sites in Bagua and Chiclayo, trained and
deployed police and military personnel, and
cleared more land in the first few months than
had been cleared in the life of the program. In
2010, RONCO left CONTRAMINAS equipped with
enough physical assets and operational capacity
to direct demining operations independently.
Since 1981, RONCO has successfully cleared more than 300 m

Air Field Surveying and Demining Activities
Bagram Air Field, a former Soviet military
airbase, is completely surrounded by dense
minefields. RONCO provides integrated
clearance methods including canine
detection teams, manual deminers, and
an assortment of flails, rollers, sifters and
other mechanical systems, and has cleared
nearly 95% of the known mined area in and

Land Clearance, Mine Action, and
UXO Training Program - Taiwan
The Taiwanese Ministry of National Defense
contracted G4S Taiwan and RONCO to expand
clearance and training capacities on the Kinmen
Islands. The islands, heavily mined in the 1950s, are being
cleared for civilian use and infrastructure development.
Kinmen civilian authorities, the Kinmen Military Command,
and the Taiwan Ministry of National Defense have prioritized
land clearance to ensure civilian safety and to guide the
transition from military zone to protected tourist attraction.
Initial project clearance efforts presented unique challenges,
including diverse terrain and environmental conservation
concerns. Located off the southwestern coast of Taiwan, the
twelve islands’ landscape is varied. While the satellite islets are flat,
Mount Taiwu, the highest point of the main island crests at 253 meters.
Other mountains stretch into the sea and abrupt cliffs have formed as
a result of erosion.
Because the Taiwanese Ministry of National Defense is committed to
ecological protection, standard clearing efforts were modified to increase
efficiency and decrease environmental disturbance. G4S Taiwan and
RONCO responded with clearance methods and equipment developed
to be minimally invasive. Alternative demining techniques, including the
introduction of prototype robotic technology, support manual clearance, and
transport of hazardous material through thick vegetation. Since June 2010, we
have completed and turned over 21 of 26 minefields.
Before the start of each minefield operation, Taiwanese military personnel facilitate
a commencement ceremony to connect RONCO personnel with village communities
at the operative location. This outreach fosters local understanding of overall operating
conditions, mine risk education, and safety control.
G4S Taiwan and RONCO’s UXO clearance training program in Taiwan trains soldiers at the
Combat Engineering School on Kinmen Island. International demining instructors work with
army deminers in minefields around the island. RONCO instructors provide stages of training
to qualify soldiers as certified deminers in accordance with the Mine Action Center of the
United Nations or the International Demining Organizing upon course completion.

Mine Action
The presence of landmines, UXO and ERW severely impact people,
property and the environment; isolated land clearance recreates
a safe environment, but more is required to ensure economic and
social development. RONCO’s mine action services aim to help
people understand risks, identify dangers, and learn how to stay
out of harm’s way. We provide stockpile destruction, mapping,
mine-risk education programs, and support victim assistance and
rehabilitation services, including job skill training and employment
opportunities.
