The amount of physical data points to be handled by oneprocess station is more than three times larger. This means extended functionalityfor the same price as of its predecessor.ECIO2 Compact I/O Ethernet moduleInnovated compact I/O module with Ethernet and RS485 interfaces. TheECIO features 30 inputs and outputs and uses Ethernet for communicationwith the process station. <strong>DOMAT</strong> CONTROL SYSTEMMINIPLC CONTROLLERSThe range of free programmable DDC controllersMiniPLC by <strong>Domat</strong> Control System is offering opensystem features right from the automation level.MiniPLC is the best choice for heat exchange stations,boiler rooms, or HVAC units up to about 400I/Os, connected over a network – be it to a SCADAsystem or just for web access. Typical examples areheat exchange stations with several heating circuitsand DHW preparation, small hotels with gas boiler,AHU, and 20-30 rooms, or heating and airconditioningof a residential object with integration of other technologies,such as pool heating, outdoor lights, wateringsystem etc.All MiniPLC stations communicate in an Ethernet networkamong each other but they also can exchangedata with 8“ touch screen controllers IPCT.1 so thatthe system topology can be easily expanded.The controllers are of two types (IPLC201 andIPLC301) and provide following interfaces:• 1x RS485 for I/O module bus (ModBus)• 2x RS232 / 2x RS485 for GSM modem for alarmSMS or system integration (e.g. M-Bus) – IPLC301only• Ethernet for communication with a touch screen orSCADA system – either native (TCP/IP) or over anOPC server.MiniPLC offers economical, reliable solution for smallsystems with native web access. For special and customized applications,MiniPLC can be extended with user-specificprogram modules and functions, e.g. communicationprotocols, functional blocks for which customers providetheir own code, etc. That is why MiniPLC is suitablealso for industrial process control.8


<strong>DOMAT</strong> CONTROL SYSTEMPROCESS STATIONS, I/O MODULESThe IPCT.1 process station is an embedded computerwith no moving parts providing standard interfaces:Ethernet, COM ports, USB, audio, keyboard, mouse.It hosts an operating system (Windows XP Embedded),process control software SoftPLC, and touch screenHMI application.a standard protocol, they provide an open I/O busalso for 3rd party manufacturers. The other way round,3rd party devices, such as variable speed drives,IRC controllers, and energy meters using one of thesupported protocols can be integrated directly intothe process station. Sometimes they can be evenconnected to the same I/O bus as the I/O modules,providing integration at the I/O level. The processstation is usually installed at a place accessible forthe maintenance staff. As the I/O bus may reach up to1000 m, data from the whole building can be linked toone process station, or more panels with I/O modulescan be connected together to one process station,which saves cabling costs.A process station may have – same as a MiniPLC– a web server enabled, so even without a SCADAsystem the process data can be accessed, setpointschanged, schedules set, trends monitored etc.The Ethernet port links to SCADA and hosts peerto-peercommunication at the same time, the I/Omodules and peripherals are connected to serial portsover separating interface converters. The I/O modulesare powered by 10 to 30 V DC or 12 to 24 V AC. Inputsand outputs, power part and communication areoptically separated from each other which preventsthe rest of the bus from damage in case of overvoltageat one module.Each module is addressed by a configurationsoftware. Analogue inputs are entered with theirmeasuring range: either they are declared as active(0..10 V) or passive for connection of all commontemperature sensor types. For special sensorcharacteristics, each input can be separately linearizedwith freely defined linearization curve.in a dynamic vector graphics. A process station can beconnected over the Ethernet to other stations and / orMiniPLCs and share data – outside temperature, loadshedding signals, energy demand signals, etc. This ispossible – thanks to TCP/IP – even in distributed andlarge networks of a company, city, or in the Internet.Digital outputs with relays can switch directly 230V AC low voltage, so that for small loads no separatecontactors / relays are necessary. Digital inputs andoutputs statuses are indicated by LEDs. <strong>DOMAT</strong> CONTROL SYSTEMROOM UNITS AND CONTROLLERSDesign range of communicative room units and controllersbrings new dimensions in room controls. LargeLCD display (60 x 60 mm) displays room temperatureand status so that the data are visible up to 5 m distance.With a push/turn knob both temperature correctionand operation mode change is easy, as is multilevelparameter setting inclusive weekly schedule plan.Floor heating is controlled by UC300, a communicativecontroller with an extra analogue input fora Pt1000 floor temperature limitation sensor.To control fancoil units, choose FC010 with roomunit UC010. The controller has three relays for a 1 to 3stage fancoil, two PWM outputs for heating and cooling,and two inputs for presence sensor and windowcontact. The small controller body fits to the fancoileasily with two screws or a DIN rail holder. The controllercommunicates with the room over a RS485 bus.The FC020 features analogue inputs, and thereforesuits perfectly to plants where the communicativeroom unit with display is not the right choice or wherea room unit can not be installed at all, such as corridorsand public places. Analogue outputs for heatingand cooling are also available here.For air handling units, small boilers, A/C units andother devices, universal room units are the bestchoice. They provide basic functionality (room temperature,room setpoint, operation mode setting) aswell as more complex functions: heating curve selection,DHW setpoint, relative humidity and air qualitydisplay and setting, etc. The set of functions to enableis configured at the commissioning time. For example,the set of operation modes may be residential (Day,Night, Auto, Off) or hotel/office (Comfort, Standby,Party, Off). Each mode provides separate setpoints forheating and cooling. The configuration software is freeof charge.The universal room units are available also with onedigital output for control of e.g. radiator valve, and twoinputs and two outputs for e.g. presence sensor andwindow contact, and control of heating and coolingvalves. The control algorithm is not part of the roomunit and must be configured in the process station,which gives more freedom to the application engineer.In the range there are also room controllers withEthernet communication (UC150, UC250), roomtemperature and humidity sensors with Ethernet,PoE and Modbus/TCP communication, with or withoutLCD display, signalling units UI400 for commercialrefrigeration, and other customized devices.The controllers and room units communicate eitherwith a process station, which reads energy demandsignals to control primary plants and sets centraldepression modes, or with a SCADA station overa serial converter or Modbus RTU / IP router. For smallinstallations, such as residential houses and familyhotels, the web interface UCWEB is an easy way howto manage the rooms over the Internet, and controla boiler or a heat pump.All room units and controller provide open communicationover Modbus RTU / TCP and because of widepower voltage range they are suitable not only for the<strong>Domat</strong> process stations and SCADA, but also for anyopen control or SCADA system. They are available infive basic colours (white, grey, beige, dark grey, andpastel green).Individual room controllers, on the other hand,provide independent control functionality with PI oron/off algorithm, together with the operation modelogic. The setpoints are predefined and therefore onlybus address must be set at the commissioning time,optionally with enabling or blocking other functions(valve protection, change-over, selected operationmodes, time scheduler etc.)The UC100 room controller provides one SSR PWMoutput to control a thermic actuator or electricalheater, UC200 features two outputs for heating andcooling, and two inputs for presence sensor (e.g. froma card reader or IR sensor) and window contactor dewpoint sensor for systems with cooling panels.10


<strong>DOMAT</strong> CONTROL SYSTEMSOFTPLC ENGINEERING TOOLSoftPLC IDE is a software package for applicationdevelopment, or programming of the control system.There are runtimes installed in the process stationswhich process the project data. However, it may beused not only for the <strong>Domat</strong> Control System I/O modulesand SoftPLC process logic. The runtime is ableto run as a data source for SCADA. In those applications,only I/O channels and variables are defined,there are no PLC functions in the runtime. Therefore noPLC programming knowledge is necessary to set upthe communication.ferent technologies may be controlled from differentplaces worldwide.The Touchscreen application then acts as an universalHMI for a variety of PLCs which use standard communicationprotocols, such as OPC, BACnet / IP, ModbusRTU or TCP, M-Bus etc. Drivers for 3rd party systemsmay be used, too (Landis & Gyr, Saia, Advantech,Johnson Controls, and more).In the Touchscreen Editor then create graphical panelscontaining texts, images, buttons, embedded orfull-page graphs, value indicators etc. The resolutionis freely definable: use any of the predefined standardresolution, or enter your own. The data is stored ina vector format and Touchscreen is able to adapt thepanel size to the actual screen resolution: it is not necessaryto redraw the project in case the display resolutionchanges e.g. due to upgrade.An important part of the application is SMS ande-mailing module. Each alarm is able to send a separatemessage with definable addressee, subjects,body, etc. It is even possible to control values overSMS according to simple scripts defined by the applicationengineer. The user is not forced to enter complexstrings, he or she can define how the SMS shouldbe composed. The Touchscreen includes list of phonenumbers granted to change values while messagesfrom other phone numbers are ignored.The application development in Touchscreen Editoris very convenient and easy: at the SoftPLC trainingsonly less than one hour is devoted to explain and practiceit. Users appreciate its intuitive menus, rich editingfunctions and multiple objects editing, which speedsup engineering. The ready project may be exportedfor web by one click. The panels with live values arethen available anywhere in the net including embeddedgraphs and value change functionality. The Touchscreenalso ports into the Windows Mobile and PocketPCenvironment. The process data is available usingPDA, tablets, smartphones and other mobile devices.The application includes a generic dialogue for alarmmanagement inclusive alarm history. The SoftPLCalarms may be acknowledged and deleted, all user actionsare recorded in the Alarm History. Entering valuesmay be protected by a PIN code, while alarm acknowledgerights may be set as not protected for easy operation.The Touchscreen also provides time scheduling functionality;there are three types of time schedulers:binary, multistate, and analogue, to enter any valuewithin a predefined limit. In the schedules, there aredefinable exceptions such as school holidays, nationalholidays, etc.One Touch screen application is able to access multipleruntimes over the network, one runtime can hostmore Touchscreen applications. The access rightsfor individual RcWare users are set up separately in theData editor of each project and screen separately. Eachuser can be granted access to a group of schemasonly (and optionally change values). History trends arealso available over the web access, with a comfortablemenu where users choose from predefined templatesand time spans to display. The plant graphics looks outexactly the same as in the SCADA, there is no needfor extra web-specific engineering. The only actionwhich needs to be taken is to configure the web serverwhich is a matter of 15 minutes.graphics and “Find in pictures” functions available.Those functions locate and focus the correspondingdatapoint in the data table or in the plant graphics.TrendingSelected datapoints store their values periodically.There are two types of history data:• long term history: saved permanently to text files orSQL database, for long-term analysis• short term history: several days back, faster sampling,for trending, tuning loops, and problem analysis.ScriptingFor complex data processing, computing and logicfunctions, script data points can be defined. The scriptinglanguage can be either classical RcWare (based onexisting systems) or JScript.NET. For analoguevalues, upper and lower alarm limits may be defined.Each alarm point has an insensivity time period(switch-on delay). After this time span an alarm messageis initiated, which can be forwarded to:• alarm phone call• SMS message• pop-up window• voice message (to the management station soundcard).The sampled values can be displayed as a graph andexported to .CSV or .XLS files. The export may alsofollow automatically on a periodical basis. The SQLdatabase is open for 3rd party programs so that theRcWare Vision station can be used as a data integrator,providing actual values e.g. over an OPC server,and history readouts over a SQL database or/andautomatic export files.Communication driversThe range of drivers is updated continuously, newdrivers are added on demand. <strong>DOMAT</strong> CONTROL SYSTEMPHOTOVOLTAIC PLANTSIn 2009, <strong>Domat</strong> Control System installed energy monitoringsystem at one of its first photovoltaic powerplants which nowadays represents a reference exampleof company state of the art solution and experiencein this field. Total installed power of this plantis 1.9 MWp and the panels are located in 7 arrays, 10to 15 strings each. The monitoring system reads outDC current in each string, and is able to detect if thestring provides less DC power than expected. The algorithmsare sophisticated enough to distinguish betweena temporary power decrease or dropout dueto snow coverage, cloudy weather as well as for instanceand long-term or permanent power loss causedby panel failure or dirt. Alarms are communicated toa management station together with actual DC currentvalues, data from the AC output energy meter, anddata from the inverters which are read over the bus.The management station also provides web interfaceso that the plant owner can see actual output power,daily and monthly yield, and other values, such as radiationintensity, and panel and outside temperatures.All data are recorded into a database for long-term effectiveevaluation. The energy monitoring system installationis one of the conditions for insurance companiesto provide insurance for losses, damage, anddropouts of energy supplies. It also helps to keep theplant in optimum condition over its whole technologylifetime. The database provides documented API forintegration into a customer’s ERP system. There is noyearly monitoring fee; the complete solution inclusivedata is in control of the user.LUMEN ENERGY MANAGEMENT CENTEROne of the activities of Lumen a.s. is service and maintenanceof photovoltaic power plants. Thanks to the<strong>Domat</strong> energy management system (EMS), all datafrom the maintained plants is brought to a commonplatform and presented to the Lumen service engineers.The system is closely bound to the management andservice database which controls the entire workflow:service agreements, preventive maintenance planning,alarm messaging, plant visit, and invoicing. Authorisedservice engineers have access to the complete processdata, but they also can remotely access the processlogic controllers at the plants and, if necessary, modifythe application software to fit customer demands orthe latest know-how. This reduces servicing costs andresponse time. For daily operation and maintenance,customized plant graphics with easy-to-operate trenddefinition is the best tool. To provide more extensiveanalysis of plant operation, data are exported to openformats so that they can be processed in e.g. MSExcel, which provides uncomplicated and cost-effectivetools for various analysing algorithms and functions.Resulting proven functions may be implemented in theservice database system to simplify operation. TheEMS software is prepared for continuous extension asthe number of connected sites increases. There are noadditional licence nor hidden costs (such as drivers,datapoints, function modules etc.), which helps thecustomer to attach new plants and acquire new clientswith ease. In the groundfloor the visitors find a shopping mall with a cafe andin the first floor there is a variety of services: bowling,fitness, sauna, massage, and rehab studio. Inthe first and second floor there are snack bar, sportbar, and restaurant. Those areas are connected tothe winter stadium. There are 320 office rooms inthe building, facilitating radiators and cooling panelswith central supply of pretreated air.The building management system integrates all importanttechnical systems of the building – HVAC,security, fire safety, fire dampers, AHU units in theserver rooms, and integrated room controls. Meterreadouts are important for effective operation ofthe plant: the system reads data from more than ahundred meters of power, water, heat, and coolingenergy. Some of the readouts are automatically sentby e-mails to the utility suppliers.The BMS also controls lights in public areas, andcommercial outdoor lights.Most of the datapoints is stored as trend data foranalysis and optimization. The alarm system indicatessystem failures long before they influence theindoor comfort.District Heating Network, TrenčínThe district heating provider in the city of Trenčín,Slovakia, decided to upgrade all its 30 boiler roomsand 20 heat exchange station to a common controlplatform and to bring them to a management stationwith remote access. <strong>Domat</strong> Control System won thetender and started to install new control systemsat the plants in December 2009, with average paceof one or two plants per week. The network consistsof wireless communication infrastructure withWiFi and Ethernet clients and four access points toconnect all network nodes. Data from all nodes arepermanently available at the management stations,trend data is stored into a SQL database which isalso used by the customer for data export and additionalcalculations in an ERP software.Strong impact was put to investment protection:all peripherials which were not damaged were alsoused in the new system, which was no problemthanks to the <strong>Domat</strong> I/O modules. The biomassburners were integrated over OPC, while some ofthe compact heating stations used BACnet / IP tocommunicate with the <strong>Domat</strong> SCADA. Heat andwater meters are integrated over M-Bus convertersinto the process stations and then over the networkinto the management stations, too. All data fromthose heterogenous systems are brought to a commonplatform and are available for daily analysisand control. The management system consists ofthree workstations with RcWare Vision: two of themare at the main workplace for online monitoring andcontrol and for long-term offline data analysis, andthe third one is installed at the biomass burner site.16
