The SEI was the brainchild of the late Dr. Robert Barlow and Dr. WilliamBrunken of SUNY Downstate. The mission of the SEI is to integrate thecomplementary strengths of the four SUNY Medical Universities and SUNY Collegeof Optometry into a single entity in order to enhance fundamental and translationalresearch for the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases to the benefit of all NewYorkers.- 37 -
