P Sebastian Thomas, MD, Anesthesiology, has been elected as Chair of the PainCommittee for the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists.Richard D. Veenstra, PhD, Pharmacology, has been appointed to the Board ofDirectors of the Greater Syracuse Region of the Syracuse and Southern Tier AmericanHeart Association, Founder's Affiliate.<strong>University</strong>_________________________________________________________________Dale Avers, PT, DPT, PhD , College of Health Professions, and Diane Luft, MLS,Library, have been elected to a 3 year term as <strong>SUNY</strong> Faculty Senators, representingthe <strong>Upstate</strong> campus at <strong>SUNY</strong>-wide faculty governance meetings.Gary Johnson, MD, Emergency Medicine, has been named Interim Chair of theDepartment of Emergency Medicine, succeeding John McCabe, MD. Dr. Johnson hasauthored numerous publications, and has served on the New York ACEP’s (AmericanCollege of Emergency Physicians) Board of Directors and serves on numerous <strong>Upstate</strong>and statewide committees. He received <strong>Upstate</strong>’s President’s Award for Excellence inTeaching in 1999, the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in2001 and the Department of Emergency Medicine’s Outstanding Clinical TeachingAward in 2003.Educational LeadershipAmy Campbell, JD, MBE, Bioethics & Humanities, is representing <strong>Upstate</strong> <strong>Medical</strong><strong>University</strong> on a course development team that is collaborating with Syracuse<strong>University</strong>. The team is developing an interdisciplinary course that will examine thelegal, ethical and social implications of stem cell research. The course is beingdeveloped by faculty at both institutions with the help of funding from the EmpireState Stem Cell Board. Dr. Campbell said course materials will be written through thesummer and fall. SU will likely pilot the course in Spring 2011.- 10 -
