Michael C. Iannuzzi, MD, MBA, Chair, Department of Medicine, was namedEdward C. Reifenstein Professor of Medicine. Reifenstein (1880-1970), for whom theprofessorship is named, was a widely known physician and organizer of the firstcardiac clinic at <strong>Upstate</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Center. He was a practicing physician for 64 yearsand held faculty positions for four decades.Peter Kane, MD, Anesthesiology, received the NYSSA 2009 Distinguished ServiceAward.Peter Mariani, MD, Emergency Medicine, received the annual "Unsung Hero Award"from Hospice of CNY on Tues., 11/17/09 for his work with ultrasound-guidedpalliative procedures for home care hospice patients.Peter Mariani MD, Emergency Medicine, became ABMS-certified in HyperbaricMedicine in December 2009. His score on the national hyperbaric board examinationachieved a 95th percentile ranking among candidates.Arnold M. Service______________________________________________________________ServiceInternational LeadershipRichard Kelley MD, Otolaryngology and Kara Kort, MD, Surgery, traveled as partof Wide Horizons For Children <strong>Medical</strong> Mission trips to Ethiopia in the fall of 2009and spring 2010 to perform surgeries, provide medical care, and train health careproviders in the Yirg Alem Hospital in southern Ethiopia. Dr Kelley was the firstENT doctor to visit southern Ethiopia and evaluated and treated over 150 patients,including ear surgery. Dr. Kort, an expert endocrine surgeon, operated on numerouspatients with massive goiters in a nation where thyroid disease is commonplace due toiodine deficiency. Ethiopia faces a staggering shortage of hospitals and healthcareprofessionals. These medical missions provide individuals, who have been waiting forsurgery in many cases for years, the opportunity to receive free medical care.Additionally, the training and equipment the <strong>Medical</strong> Mission Teams provide greatlyimprove the quality of care available to the community even after the mission iscompleted.Andras Perl, MD, PhD, Medicine, was appointed as a member of the Federation ofInternational Societies of Clinical Immunology Center of Excellence Designation.Steven J. Scheinman, MD, Senior Vice President and Dean of the College ofMedicine, was appointed co-chair of the organizing committee of a new InternationalConference on Early Disease Detection and Prevention, which was held in Munich,Germany, February 25-28, 2010. This was a new concept for such a meeting, notlimited to any one medical specialty but focusing rather on approaches to earlydetection and prevention of disease in a range of specialties. National LeadershipRan Anbar, MD, Medicine, has been chosen President-elect of the American Societyof Clinical Hypnosis, and will assume the office of President in 2011.Kerry Greene Donnelly MBA, RT(R) (M) (CT)(QM), College of HealthProfessions, has been asked to serve on the Job Analysis Task Force of theAssociation for Vascular Access (AVA). The AVA is developing an internationalcertification examination for vascular access professionals.Paul Grover, PhD, Associate VP for Academic Affairs, was invited to serve as asmall group facilitator and panel member at the Middle States Commission on HigherEducation Self-Study Institute in Philadelphia, PA on November 10 and 11, 2009. Thegroup he advised consisted of representatives from doctoral level institutions currentlypreparing for accreditation through the MSCHE self study process. Dr. Grover sharedhis experience in coordinating the recent <strong>Upstate</strong> self-study that resulted inaccreditation with commendation.Laura Knight, MD, Pathology, has been appointed to serve on the NationalAssociation of <strong>Medical</strong> Examiners’ Forensic Pathology Training Subcommittee and onthe Best Resident Paper and Poster Award Subcommittee in 2009 and 2010. Dr.Knight has also been appointed to serve on the National Association of <strong>Medical</strong>Examiners’ Education Subcommittee in 2010.Melissa W. Ko, MD, Neurology, was selected by the American Academy ofNeurology to attend the 2010 Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Forum in Ft. Lauderdale,FL, January 7-10, 2010. The forum provides training in patient and legislativeadvocacy for 30 neurologists worldwide to be applied at the local, state and federallevel. Dr. Ko's advocacy interest is combating the obesity epidemic in central NewYork in adult and pediatric patients.Leslie J. Kohman, MD, FACS, Surgery, has been elected to the Commission onCancer representing the Fellowship with a membership term of three years.John McCabe, MD, Chief Executive Officer of <strong>University</strong> Hospital and SeniorVice President for Hospital Affairs, has been named chair of the Board of Directorsof the American Board of <strong>Medical</strong> Specialties (ABMS), the organization that overseesthe certification of physician specialists in the United States. The team is developing an interdisciplinary course that will examine thelegal, ethical and social implications of stem cell research. The course is beingdeveloped by faculty at both institutions with the help of funding from the EmpireState Stem Cell Board. "Bob" Barlow Jr. July 31, 1029 – December 24, 2009Robert B. "Bob" Barlow Jr., 70, of Jamesville, NY, and Woods Hole, MA,passed away December 24, 2009, after a battle with leukemia. Bob wasborn in Trenton, NJ, and lived in Freehold, NJ, where he met his wife, of48 years, Patricia. He graduated from the Peddie School in New Jersey,received his bachelor's from Bowdoin College and his doctorate fromRockefeller <strong>University</strong> in New York City. After Rockefeller, Bob becamea scientist, researcher and professor at Syracuse <strong>University</strong> for 28 years until the late1990s, when he joined the faculty at <strong>Upstate</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>University</strong>.There, he was the driving force that established the Center for Vision Research, a groupnow that numbers 50 people and is the largest clinically focused research group at<strong>Upstate</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>University</strong> His leadership was critical in establishing the <strong>SUNY</strong><strong>Upstate</strong> Foundation's endowment to support vision research and the <strong>SUNY</strong> EyeInstitute, a collaboration of all four <strong>SUNY</strong> medical schools performing vision research.Bob had been the recipient of many awards, including the President's Award forExcellence and Leadership in Research at <strong>Upstate</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>University</strong> in 2002, SeniorScientist Award-Research to Prevent Blindness in 2005, State <strong>University</strong> of New YorkChancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities in 2007, andthe ARVO Gold Fellow in 2009.He also held leadership positions on several boards, including being a vice president ofthe board of trustees of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, onthe board of trustees of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole,Massachusetts, and a director for the Doreen Grace Brain Center in Mashpee,Massachusetts. He had been a visiting scholar at Harvard <strong>University</strong>, <strong>University</strong> ofCambridge in England, and the <strong>University</strong> of Tsukuba in Japan and had a long list ofinvited presentations as a lecturer. He had been featured in many scientific journals andprograms, including Nature Magazine, Discovery Channel and the BBC.- 40 -


His work has also been published in more than 103 scientific papers, and there are fivemore that will be published posthumously. And last, due to his thoughtful preparation,his important work on macular degeneration will be continued under the guidance ofhis colleagues at <strong>Upstate</strong>l. Bob had many passions outside of the lab, most of whichinvolved the water. He loved to swim, scuba dive and fish on his boat, the "Jimbo."During the summers at Woods Hole, he made a ritual of swimming every day, usuallyoff Nobska Beach, and even swam across Vineyard Sound and Buzzard's Bay. Back inSyracuse, when not at home or the lab, he could be found in a pool swimming mastersor heading to a Syracuse <strong>University</strong> basketball game. He was also an active member ofthe Pompey Lions Club. Bob is survived by his wife, Patricia; his three children,Kimberly (Braith) Kelly of Connecticut, Jill (Mark) Bloom of Maryland and Jack(Alison) Barlow of Massachusetts; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; hisbrother, James Barlow; his sister Margaret Jane Lawson; and several nieces, nephewsand cousins.Donations can be made in Bob's name to the Vision Research Fund, 311, <strong>Upstate</strong><strong>Medical</strong> <strong>University</strong> Foundation, 750 East Adams Street, CAB 326, Syracuse, NY13210 (315) 464-4416.
