Encircle Marketing’s latest report to TTN shows that, in thelast quarter of 2012, prices particularly at the top end ofthe market (greater than 17”, WYZ and Premiums) sawnotable declines.Top End of Tyre Retailing Market Hardest Hit in Last Quarter of 2012Encircle Marketing’s latest report to TTN shows that, in the lastquarter of 2012, prices particularly at the top end of the market(greater than 17”, WYZ and Premiums) saw notable declines.Prior to this, prices had fluctuated throughout the year (somemonths up/ others down) but from October until the end of the year, prices started to fall back. If we look at WYZ, for example, theaverage price position at the start of the year was £108.29 31 (fullyinclusive) increasing to £116 by September. In October however, theaverage price had fallen to £113.09 setting the trend for November(£111.96) with December (£112.42) seeing a slight recovery.Elsewhere, for V, the reduction was less significant (but still notableall the same) at £75.15 at year end versus £76.61 in September. For H, the reduction was slightly higher £71.85 versus £73.38 (STflat £57.17 versus £57.88).Further analysis of the data at a rim size level, reveals a similarpicture, namely, sizes on a rim less than 17” are by and large staticand sizes above this are conversely down (in the last 3 months ofthe year).Encircle report that the one size that looks hardest hit by this trendis the 235/ 40 18Y. It ended the year at £140.06 (again fullyinclusive) having been as high as £155.63 in June and £154.16 inSeptember.Moving onto the brands, and collectively, the Premium sectorappears the hardest hit in terms of price position with a reduction inthe last quarter over mark norm @4.3% and versus the year high, inJune of 5.4% (£94.75 versus £100.24). Mid Range appearingsomewhat unaffected (as of yet) however, Budget also seeing adecline. Interestingly, the decline within the Premium market starteda month prematurely, when compared to the overall market (in4September rather than October). As the top-line figure suggests, all Premiums, with the exception ofPirelli, saw a drop in their price position in the last quarter. Hardesthit were Bridgestone who moved from £101.18 in September to£95.31. That said, this movement was somewhat affected byBridgestone’s change in distribution over the same time. Encirclereport a significant growth for Bridgestone within Local Independentsover the same period in terms of overall recommendation. Thiscoupled with the channel typically selling brands cheaper than others(channels) has consequently dragged the overall number down.Continental and Michelin were not too far behind on thisperformance. Pirelli however bucked the trend. This was primarilydue to its re-emergence within ATS and Kwik Fit (where it had lostbusiness in the early part of the year). Finally, looking at trends by Channel, Encircle report that theNational Fast Fits follow the trend, with levels down in the lastquarter (£101.71 in December versus £105.92 in September).Outside of this, the Pure Internet players followed suit (£75.09versus £81.56 over the same period) but notably the main stayIndependents have seen a shift upwards. Over the course of 2012,this Channel saw consistent month on month increases to actuallyend the year at a higher average selling position than even the CarDealers. Encircle is quick to point out however that this is drivenby a change in behaviour with more Premium brands being pushednow when compared to earlier in the year (Premiums taking up27.8% of all recommendation s in Q4 versus 23.2 in Q1).It will be interesting to see Encircle’s update in May as to how thisevolves into 2013.Accurate Vehicle & Tyre Data Drives Everything We Do - www.carwebuk.com

TYRE INDUSTRY NEWSLatest ReportTyre Dealers Struggle.....The latest Plimsoll Analysis shows that the tyre dealers market isin a healthy state and on average sales are increasing at 7.9%.On top of that, margins are sitting at 2.9% and 35 companies areshowing increased profitability and sales. However, despite this promising news, a review into the top 400businesses operating in the tyre dealers industry has found that21 companies are struggling for survival.David Pattison, senior analyst on the project, said: “As seen withthe recent closures and administration of big high-street andcommercial stores, these organisations were losing groundagainst the competition. It’s much the same in the tyre dealersmarket, the overall market is healthy, but some are fallingbehind.“These 21 firms have seen sales have decline in the latest yearand profitability plummet to such an extent that they’re nowoperating under severe financial pressure.“These phases of the business cycle often lead to casualties. What’s different this time is the pace of this change as, in thepast, it’s taken up to 10 years for a large company to fail but nowit may only take two or three years.“Twenty-one companies have seen their sales fall by up to 21%.Over two thirds are losing money and many have seenproductivity fall to such an extent that they are becomingincreasingly uncompetitive.“Historically, these businesses would have been seen as goodacquisitions. But today you would need to questions their valueand how they would sit in the future market. Five minutes with thePlimsoll Analysis will help you understand the market better.”The Plimsoll Analysis, which is also available in an online format, provides an individual profile of each of the UK’s top tyre dealers. It also offers an overall financial rating on each company andhelps in understanding up-and coming-competitors, the movers inthe market and acquisition prospects – an area that’s set to bebusy in the months ahead as companies compete for marketshare. For more information on the tyre dealers report or any ofPlimsoll’s titles please contact Chris Glancey on 01642 626 419or alternatively email c.glancey@plimsoll.co.ukReaders of this article are entitled to a £50 discount off thisreport by calling 01642 626419 and quoting reference PR/TI77.6Pothole Plague Risks a Rise inTyre Related Road CasualtiesThe current pothole epidemicblighting the UK’s roads is not onlycausing added financial burden fordrivers and councils, but it is alsoin danger of leading to a rise in thenumber of tyre related roadcasualties. The stark warning has been issuedby TyreSafe, and comes after the consumer watchdog Which?found that Councils in England and Wales paid out £22.8m incompensation to drivers for pothole related damage in 2012.“Hitting a pothole can cause a number of tyre and wheelproblems which can have a serious impact on road safety,”explains Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe. “Visible damagesuch as buckled wheels or lumps in the tyre are the most obvioussigns of a problem which must be addressed by a qualifiedprofessional. However, hidden problems such as cracked alloyscan be just as dangerous.”Indeed, such is the scale of the pothole problem that oneTyreSafe member reported more than 100 customers withdamaged alloy wheels visited one of its outlets in just the lastmonth alone. Furthermore, following the ‘perfect storm’conditions for the formation of potholes, many road experts arenow predicting months of motoring misery ahead.“If drivers do hit a pothole, it’s important that they check theirtyre pressures regularly over the next few days to see if there isany gradual loss of pressure,” adds Jackson. Hairline fractures inthe alloy wheel can lead to air escaping and low pressure canhave devastating consequences.”Other pothole related damage that drivers are being advised tolook out for include cuts, lumps or bulges in the tyre as well asany changes to the vehicle’s feel or handling which can be asign of misalignment.Accurate Vehicle & Tyre Data Drives Everything We Do - www.carwebuk.com

TYRE INDUSTRY NEWSProtect Winter Tyre InvestmentMotorists are recognising that being prepared for the worstthat UK winter weather can throw at them, whether it’s heavysnow, cold conditions or heavy rain, is worth investing in andas such winter tyres are starting to gain traction with motoristswho are now waking up to the added safety benefits they offer.Indeed, Kwik-Fit recently reported that demand for winter tyresat its depots has quadrupled in the last four years. However, with household budgets remaining squeezed, driversthat have made the switch to winter rubber will be keen toprotect their investment and see that their new tyres last aslong as possible. One of the easiest and most important waysto ensure this is by having a four wheel alignment check whenwinter tyres are fitted.“When fitting new tyres to a car, it is vitally important that thevehicle has a thorough 14 point alignment check at the sametime,” explains Kathryn Beaurain from the websiteAlignMyCar.co.uk. “Failing to have your wheels aligned meansthat your new tyres may suffer from rapid or uneven wear. Notonly does this lead to higher running costs as the tyres willneed replacing much sooner and increased fuel consumption, but it can also compromise your safety on the road as well.”When visiting a Hunter equipped AlignMyCar centre, motoristshave the reassurance that their alignment check will be carriedout using the latest alignment technology to deliver accurateresults, fast.More Cold Weather PredictedIn the UK we can expect some bad weather during the laterwinter months and quite often there is more snow in Februarythan during other winter months. In the past five decades theUK has experienced temperatures consistently below 7°C atwhich level summer tyres do not perform efficiently in termsof traction and stopping distances. The solution to maintaining safe passage on the roads insnow, ice and low temperatures is to fit winter or cold weathertyres. According to leading tyre company Continental Tyres, drivers are six times more likely to have an accident duringwinter months than any other time in the year.Research has indicated that the one major fear that mostdrivers have is the fear of skidding on wet or icy roadconditions. Cold weather tyres cannot overcome the laws ofphysics but will help to maintain traction and reduce stoppingdistances when the ambient temperatures fall below 7°C orwhen the roads are snow covered or icy.Concerns have been expressed recently about insurancecover on vehicles fitted with winter tyres. According to theAssociation of British Insurers many insurance companies donot require the payment of any additional premium ifcustomers decide to fit winter tyres, provided that the tyresmeet and are fitted in accordance with the vehiclemanufacturer’s specification. However, some insurers requirethat motorists contact them to let them know if you fit wintertyres. If in doubt – check!Winter Tyre Demand Up 450%Over recent days Kwik Fit, the UK’s leading tyre retailer, has soldmore than five times the number of winter tyres than the sametime the previous week, as drivers have taken heed of severeweather warnings and made advance preparations. However, it is still a small proportion of drivers who are switchingtheir tyres in the winter and research for Kwik Fit shows that themajority of drivers (two thirds, or 68%) are unaware of thedifference between cold and warm weather tyres. A quarter(23%) of motorists say they haven’t even heard of winter tyres.Kwik Fit is calling for the government to update the driving testto include knowledge of winter tyres. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) Theory Test askscandidates 50 questions from a pool of nearly 1,000, but evenwith such a vast number of questions on a wide range of topics, the Test doesn’t have anything on winter tyres, even though theycan dramatically improve safety in cold weather.Despite the vast majority of the UK having long term averagetemperatures below 7°C throughout December – February, andwell below this in peak driving times, only a small minority ofdrivers have switched to winter tyres in previous years.“With more countries making winter tyres compulsory, and theirbenefits very clear, we believe they should be part of the theorytest. There are plenty of questions on tyres, and indeed someaddressing driving in winter, but winter tyres are not covered. The Theory Test is the only time that the government has a trulycaptive audience and can educate new drivers about keepingsafe on the road. The DSA should take this opportunity to makesure drivers know about the safety benefits of winter tyres,” saidRoger Griggs of Kwik-Fit.Motorists Ignore Safety AdviceSix in ten motorists have ignored official advice to not travel inwintery conditions, with half claiming work as their reason forrisking their safety, according to new research from ContinentalTyres. 29 per cent of drivers, over 10 million people, disregardemergency warnings either frequently or all of the time. Those that take the chance, half blame either not getting paidor the prospect of getting fired if they fail to turn up for work astheir reason. A genuine emergency only accounted for thejourneys made by one in six people when the advice was not totravel. The shocking statistics are revealed in a study of 2,000motorists for Continental Tyres produced as the UK has beenstruggling to cope with weeks of snow and freezingtemperatures. The report also found that 16 per cent of road users have hadan accident and one in four have been forced to abandon theircars on winter roads.Laura Hardy, safety expert at Continental Tyres, said: ‘’If theadvice is not to travel other than for emergencies, then thatadvice needs to be heeded.“It is alarming to think the recession may be prompting peopleto ignore vital road safety warnings made when we haveadverse weather and drivingconditions.”Researchers found that 46 per cent ofpeople have had a near miss on ice andsnow, prompting 39 per cent to say theyfeel unsafe driving in the winter months.8Accurate Vehicle & Tyre Data Drives Everything We Do - www.carwebuk.com

TYRE INDUSTRY NEWSEnvironment Agency ArrestsServe as Severe WarningThe Tyre Recovery Association(TRA) has welcomed raids bythe Environment Agency inthe North West as part of aninvestigation into allegedwaste tyre crime.Three sites were targetedwith the support ofLancashire Police and GreaterManchester Police forces and fivearrests were made.“The Environment Agency has once again demonstrated thatit has the intelligence, commitment and powers to tacklewaste tyre crime head on and the latest raids in the NorthWest are welcomed by the TRA.“It is a stark reminder that everyone involved in thecollection, recycling and reprocessing of waste tyres mustabide by a series of strict guidelines,” said Peter Taylor,Secretary General, Tyre Recovery Association. The raid forms part of Operation Broadway which has beenrunning for seven months and is one of the NationalEnvironmental Crime Team’s major on-going investigations.Other tyre crimes it has uncovered include industrial scalefly-tipping and the exporting of illegal waste. However, to help those in the tyre trade understand theirlegal responsibilities there is the UK tyre industry’s tyrerecovery programme called The Responsible RecyclerScheme (RRS).It is the largest voluntary tyre recovery programme in Europeand currently safely handles more than two thirds of theUK’s annual waste tyre arisings.Since 2006, across the whole of Europe there has been acomplete ban of sending tyres, including shredded tyres, into landfill sites. Under the RRS, tyres are stored, collected, recycled or reprocessed in line with all UK and EUlegislations. Independent audits and full traceability meansthat tyres handled by RRS member companies can betracked throughout the disposal chain.“The message is clear from this latest action by theEnvironment Agency – become a responsible recycler or riskbeing arrested. The best way to ensure you’re fully up-todatewith your legal responsibilities for tyre recycling is tojoin the Responsible Recycler Scheme,” added Taylor.Anyone with suspicions or knowledge of illegal wasteactivities should contact the Environment AgencyTel: 0800 807060 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.Meanwhile, to find out more about the Tyre RecoveryAssociation’s Responsible Recycler Scheme, visit:www.tyrerecovery.org.ukCar Drivers Must be Educated onTyre Pressure Monitoring SystemsCompany car drivers need to be educated to get the most of thetyre pressure monitoring systems that are becoming compulsoryacross the European Union. From November of last year, all new car model types approved inthe EU must have TMPS installed while all new cars sold musthave them fitted from November 2014.Mike Wise, director of Tyre Programmes at motor industry e-commerce expert epyx, said: “While this technology will inevitablyadd a small amount to the price of a new car, we believe that itis something that fleets should embrace.“Every piece of research that has ever been carried out into tyrepressures in the fleet and general car parc shows that tyres areoften woefully underinflated, damaging fuel economy and creatingsafety risks. This is an excellent way to solve the problem.”However, Wise added that TMPS would only be effective if driverswere educated in its use and if fleet managers made it clear thatthey expected the systems to be properly used.He said: “TPMS systems have been around for some years andthe potential problem is that some drivers simply ignore them, either because they don’t understand their purpose or becausethey simply can’t be bothered to inflate their tyres.“With the equipment becoming effectively compulsory on fleets,as part of their duty of care, employers need to ensure thatdrivers understand TPMS and acknowledge that any warningflagged up by the system must be acted upon.”Wise added that a further issue was that TMPS should not beused by drivers as an excuse not to regularly inspect their tyres. He said: “There is obviously much more to the safety of a tyrethan its pressure and fleets managers should ensure that driversare still carrying out regular inspections as part of the generalvehicle checks that should be part of their risk managementpolicy.”epyx’s 1link Service Network e-commerce platform is used toauthorise the fitment of around half a million tyres every year fora potential two million company cars, vans and trucks.New New PartnershipWestlake Tyres continues to successfully implement itsEuropean expansion plan and has recently agreed a newpartnership with T. Hansen Gruppen A/S for the distributionin Denmark of Westlake’s passenger tyre range.Nigel Hampson, Head of Business Development for EskayTyres, distributor of Westlake Tyres in the U.K. and severalkey European markets, stated: “We believe that the T.Hansen Gruppen A/S is the ideal partner to grow withWestlake in the Danish market. Having accompanied us tothe impressive Westlake production facilities and discussedplans for both the summer and winter tyre markets, we areconfident that T. High Performance and European Label Grade Tyre‘The new Sport BluResponse, a touringsummer tyre designed to be fitted onpassenger cars, delivers impressivebenefits including excellent performances inwet grip, no compromise on mileage andimportant savings on the fuel consumption’BlueResponse Wins Tyre TestDunlop Tyres are celebrating a win with their all new SportBluResponse Summer Tyre. After a successful launch of the tyre in Dubai in January, AutoExpress were able to carry out a ‘mini test’ against theMichelin Energy Saver +. The test put the two tyres head-toheadin both dry and wet testing.Jamie Fretwell from Auto Express tested the tyres andcommented: “The BluResponse is a worthy addition to thebrand’s range..... Polymers in the tyre help it adapt to theroad surface quickly and it gripped for longer than thecompetitor’s tyre..... cornering grip in the wet was impressiveand the car turned in nicely, with the tyre’s stiff outershoulder helping here.”Kate Rock, Consumer and Brand PR Manager for Dunlop said:“We are pleased to see that our new Dunlop eco tyre isperforming well in magazine tests already. We have everyconfidence in this new tyre as the TUV testing showed that itwas better than its key competitors in several key test areas. The new tyre offers impressive wet braking, with up to 3meters shorter braking distance versus the average results ofcompetitors in the TUV test. Its superiority also appears inwet handling, with up to 3% versus the average scores oftested competitors.“As well as these impressive credentials the tyre also ratesvery highly on the new EU Tyre Label which provides a ratingon rolling resistance, wet grip and noise. The BluResponsecame out with a market leading BA rating.”The new Sport BluResponse is all grip, no compromise, one of theworld’s leading manufacturers of high and ultra high performancetyres, that announced it has launched a new breed of tyres. Thenew Sport BluResponse, a touring summer tyre designed to befitted on passenger cars, delivers impressive benefits includingexcellent performances in wet grip, no compromise on mileage andimportant savings on the fuel consumption.Built on 125 years of winning races, the tyre comes withmotorsport derived polymers, which deliver increased adaptabilityto the road surface for improved wet grip and brakingperformances. With a European BA label on rolling resistance andwet grip respectively, the tyre is also one of the highest gradedtyres available on the market today.“Recent research among Dunlop consumers revealed that, amongst the main criteria considered to select a new tyre, mostconsumers pay attention to the brand first, then wet grip as areflection of safety, and then fuel efficiency,” states SanjayKhanna, Managing Director, Dunlop Brand. “That makes Dunlop, with its new Sport BluResponse a big player on the market. However, we would not be Dunlop if we did not focus on the overallperformance and not only the label grades.Independent test results from TÜV SUD clearly show that, evenwith high label grades, we have not – and will not – compromise onperformance.”On wet, the new Sport BluResponse benefits from large centralgrooves that evacuate water efficiently, especially at high speed, delivering high quality aquaplaning performance. Compared withseveral key competitors, the new Dunlop also offers impressivewet braking, with up to 3 meters shorter braking distance versusthe average results of competitors in test. Its superiority alsoappears in wet handling, with up to 3% versus the average scoresof tested competitors. It also provides relevantinformation in actual cost terms for greater transparency.FOS is a significant step forward in the OTR business foroperators of earthmoving equipment and other heavy plant andequipment. It enables each OTR representative to deliver a fleetinspection report direct from a customer’s site via an internetconnection. These reports give full details to the customer by tyre position“Customers do not talk in bars or PSI; they talk in pounds (ortheir local currency). For this reason, we decided to convert thevariance between the measured pressure and therecommendation into a reliable ‘value at risk’ covering the life ofthe tyre. Under this format, the findings talk much more to ourend-users. This system also gives the value of the fleet visitperformed by our experts, a service that not all premium brandsare providing today” said Stephan Renson, After Sales andMarketing Manager Off-The-Road Tyres Goodyear EMEA.The programme has been operating across most Europeanmarkets since mid-November with feedback demonstrating thatcustomers are impressed with how quickly they can receive thereports, but above all it’s the “value at risk” report that is provingmost impressive. This aspect of the report, which is believed tobe unique in the industry, helps customers to understand thefinancial risk of running with incorrect tyre pressures.24buyclassiceasythetyreswayvintagetyres.com/tradelinkYOUR DIRECT TRADE ACCOUNTTHROUGH OUR WEBSITEauthentic tyres fromthe ultimate classic tyre authorityvintagetyres.com/tradelinkt: 01590 612261 sales@vintagetyres.com///////////////////////////////////Needadvice on classictyre choice, fitmentor atechnical query?Give us a ringor email.Apollo Tyres....’Manufacturer of the Year Award’Apollo Tyres has been honoured with the Tire Manufacturer ofthe Year award, at the Tire Technology International Awards forInnovation and Excellence 2013. TYRE INDUSTRY NEWSRegistration is now open at: www.cvshow.com whereprospective visitors can register by clicking on the‘free tickets’ panel on the home pageContinental Tyres at CV Show2013 is set to be an exciting year at Continental Tyres and whatbetter place than the CV Show to unveil a whole range of newproducts, including the company’s first ever dedicated bus andcoach tyres, the very latest ContiVanContact van tyres, and thenew Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS),ContiPressureCheck. The new all-axle bus and coach tyres, Conti Coach, Conti CityPlusand Conti Urban are the first tyres to be introduced in thegeneration 3 range, marking the beginning of the mostcomprehensive product enhancement for truck and bus tyres inthe over 140-year history of Continental Tyres. With each new generation 3 tyre designed to meet the challengesspecific to its application, Conti Coach, designed for longdistance coach operations, has been engineered to provideexcellent rolling resistance, giving greater fuel economy as wellas considerably higher mileage compared to its predecessor. The Conti CityPlus for regional or intercity applications has theaddition of a thicker sidewall to protect the tyre from damage aswell as enhanced wet braking capabilities throughout the life ofthe tyre provided by the new 3D tread structure. And finally theConti Urban, for innercity use, not only benefits from a thickersidewall but also an innovative tread compound designedexpressly to combat the challenges of innercity roads such ascontinuous braking and acceleration. The Conti Urban Tyre alsobenefits from reduced rolling resistance. Also on display at the CV Show will be the new generation 3 ContiEcoPlus HT3 trailer tyre, successor to the HTL2+ tyre, which willbe available in the UK later this year. The tyre, designedspecifically for long distance work, has excellent rollingresistance properties which classify it as energy efficiency classA on the EU tyre label. From the tread through the belt design tothe casing and bead, the engineers at Continental made sure thedesign and rubber compound for each of the generation 3 tyresis perfectly suited to its application. Finally the company will also be showcasing the exciting newTPMS system, ContiPressureCheck. Over 90 per cent of all tyrefailures are preceded by slow leaks that cause gradual loss oftyre pressure. Identifying a failure early can not only preventpunctures, but also lower operating costs by warning ofunderinflated tyres, which can lead to higher rolling resistanceand increased fuel consumption and carbon emissions.ContiPressureCheck is the only tyre pressure monitoring systemto generate its pressure and temperature data by using a sensormounted inside the tyre itself. This has the advantage ofprotecting the system from impact and means the sensors canmeasure temperature data directly in the tyre without obstructingtyre fitting. ContiPressureCheck is quick and simple to install andcan also be added during later tyre changeovers.Bodybuilders Dominate CV ShowWith the accent firmly set on whole vehicle type approval, it isgratifying to see the return of the UK’s bodybuilders to thenation’s favourite road transport event, the Commercial VehicleShow 2013.Not since the CV Bodybuilder Show in 1994 has there been anopportunity for the road transport industry to compare such awide range of bodywork and trailers under one roof. That isthe message from Goodyear and the Freight TransportAssociation (FTA) following a series of joint events they carriedout at motorway service areas at the end of 2012.The free tyre check events collected and analysed data on anumber of aspects of UK truck tyres including the treadpattern, the tread depths and the pressures, and whilst theresults show that the vast majority of commercial trucks on UKroads are operating on tyres that fall within the law, the extentto which they actually deliver optimum driving experience cansometimes leave a lot to be desired. Indeed, only one out ofover a 1000 tyres checked was deemed to be illegal due to itstread depth – a result that would have been unthinkable justfive years ago as Andy Timms, Area Manager for FTA’s VISexplains: “Driver awareness of what is required for a tyre to bedeemed legal has improved over the last few years and this isdemonstrated in the results we saw at our series of events.”The Parts AllianceAs the leading business group in the aftermarket, The PartsAlliance is committed to up-skilling and driving productivity inthe industry through its products and services. VAN & LIGHT TRUCK TYRESNew Light Truck Tyre Vantra LTHankook Tire extend their line-up for commercial vans and transporters, introducing the Hankook Vantra LT. The all new light truck tyre was developedin view of the high demands that are placed on passenger and goodstransport vehicles in regional traffic. Durability, fuel efficiency and mileageplayed a key role during development as well as safety-related drivingcharacteristics such as short breaking distances and superior wetperformance. The new Vantra LT is now available in 34 dimensions.Frequent use in start/stop traffic places special demands on tyres: a longservice-life with high economic efficiency to maximise mileage and robustnessagainst external influences are important while safety performance is playinga key role as well. The Hankook Vantra LT’s innovative design features suchas a sidewall protect shield and optimised groove location with durablecontact patch technology enable increased performance and assure safety athigh speeds whilst at the same time reduce tread wear and improve the tyre’sfuel efficiency by up to 13 per cent versus its predecessor. In addition, 3-channel wide central grooves and 3D lateral grooves enable fastwater dispersion to reduce hydroplaning and guarantee superior performancein wet and even cold weather conditions. The Hankook Vantra LT’s footprint is designed to improve durability by applyingsquare shape contact patch technology that allows for an optimised grooveposition, increasing stability in the outer grounding footprint area. Incombination with the tyre’s innovative reinforced belt structure featuring adouble steel belt this allows a more even distribution of the ground pressureresulting in an improved wear performance of up to 12 per cent. In addition, the reduced tyre deformation results in a lowered rolling resistance, resultingin higher fuel efficiency and thus heightened cost-effectiveness – a key factorfor tyres used for start/stop traffic. The additionally applied sidewall protect shield effectively helps to preventsidewall damage. The innovative pattern not only guarantees superior wet braking performanceand effectively prevents hydroplaning but also improves fuel efficiency byminimising energy loss while driving. Whetherthey are owned by a sole trader or are partof a major fleet, commercial vehicles areliterally the wheels of industry – so theirowners and operators are always eager tominimise costly off-road time. More thanwith any other sector of the tyre market, itis vital therefore that the retailer can offerthe right tyre at the right price for everycommercial vehicle on the road – and thatthey can do so with a minimum of delay.Already well-established as the UK’slargest tyre distributor, Stapleton’sstockholding at any given time now tops1.2 million, which, combined with thecompany’s 14 distribution points and 300-strong fleet, offers almost unprecedentedchoice as well as the capability to deliverwith rare rapidity.“Our comprehensive stockholdingtogether with enhanced hourly, threetimes daily, twice a day and next daydeliveries exemplifies our ‘Working for theCustomer’ philosophy,” says Stapleton’sHead of General Wholesale, Nigel O’Hara.“Equally important, though, is the stableof private brand van and light truck tyresthat we’ve been developing over the lastfew years. In addition to the householdname premium brands like Bridgestone,Continental, Dunlop, Goodyear, Michelinand Pirelli exclusive brands such asMaxxis, Nexen, Matador and Primewellamong others enable our dealers to offerhard-pressed commercial vehicledriver/operators keenly priced alternativeproducts without the slightestcompromise in safety or performance. We’re convinced that this gives themsome vital extra muscle in a fiercelycompetitive market!”Maxxis UE-168The most recent name to join thatexclusive stable is Maxxis, a brandwith an enviable motorsportspedigree that translates to its van andlight truck tyres in the shape of theMaxxis UE Van Tyre range. Designedto deal effortlessly with the toughestchallenges a van tyre is likely to face, the rugged UE103’s deep shouldergrooves make it puncture andabrasion-resistant and deliversresponsive all-season, all-roundhandling and performance. TheUE168 shares those fundamentalcharacteristics, augmented by acompound and tread design speciallyformulated with the long haul andlongevity in mind.Primewell PV600With the PV600, Primewell, a veteranmember of the Stapleton’s stablethese days, addresses in particularthe needs of the van driver carryingheavy loads, for whom safety androad noise are paramount concerns.Available in 20 sizes from 14” to 16”its high endurance technology isdesigned to make light work of heavyloads with excellent safety marginsand an impressively quiet ride.Nexen CP321In a similar vein, Nexen’s CP321multi-purpose vehicle tyre – just oneof three van tyre patterns from thisKorean manufacturer that’sdeservedly well established in the UK– is an excellent all-round solution forvan operators with responsive car-likehandling and even wear thanks to itssolid shoulder rib in all its 14 sizesfrom 13” to 16”.Accurate Vehicle & Tyre Data Drives Everything We Do - www.carwebuk.com

Re-focusing on Van TyresMatador MPS 330 Maxilla 2Of course, not all van driving isheavyweight work – andfollowing on from the everpopular MPS 320 Maxilla is thenew MPS 330 Maxilla 2 fromMatador. Available from 14” to16” the new MPS 330 providesexcellent wet weatherperformance due to its robustconstruction and three wideradial drainage grooves - and isparticularly popular with driverswho like their van to perform likea car on the motorway and onthe urban cycle too.Nigel concludes, “Being the operatorsof a sizeable fleet of vans ourselves -we’re acutely aware of the problemsthat drivers and owners face. I believeour intimate understanding of thismarket sector has been a major factorin arming our retailers with thecompetitively priced products theircustomers demand. Not only has thishelped our retailers in less thanfavourable market conditions, it hasalso been instrumental in helpingStapleton’s to continue to buck theglobal economic trend!”More information on Stapleton’s is atwww.stapletons-tyres.co.ukTel: 0870 60 54321.Making White Van Man Think OrangeMCV3The latest generation of Maxxis tyres, designed specifically for van and lighttrucks means that fleet operators no longer have to compromise between costsavings and performance. The MCV, UE, UR and MA ranges provide superbvalue for money, durability and handling in all weather conditions, helping keepcommercial drivers safe on the road. The new MCV3, for example is designed with wider main grooves and more sipesfor better water dissipation and stability at high speed, as well as increasedcomfort and traction in mud and snow. Improved puncture and abrasionresistance also comes as standard with the MCV3 via a double steel beltconstruction, continuous shoulder ribs, and extra plies.Continuous product improvement is obviously a key concern for Maxxis, as UKMD Derek McMartin confirms: “We pride ourselves in the advanced technologythat goes into all of our products what we call Orange Engineering. This principleunderpins all that we do, so an everyday commercial driver benefits from thesame commitment to quality as a supercar driver. Drive with ConfidenceWith the light truck market expecting to see growth over the nextyears, and a growing replacement market, the need for fuelefficient tyres has never been more been more apparent. Risingcosts of ownership, driven by petrolprices has seen fuel efficiency atthe top of mind for fleet andindividual vehicle owners alike.Dunlop’s recent launch of theEconoDrive is designed tohelp light truck drivers drivewith confidence and lowerthe cost of ownershipthrough more miles perkilometre. With some 12advanced engineeringupgrades and newtechnologies, Dunlop’sEconoDrive is specificallydesigned to ensure that lighttrucks can go farther, for longer, and at lower cost.Speaking on the matter, SanjayKhanna – Dunlop Brand MarketingDirector explains: “At Dunlop we have always understood thatcompanies which operate light trucks are in the market to makea profit with their goods and services, we aim to deliver a nextgeneration tyre, designed to provide high quality, long distances,a comfortable ride all at reduced fuel cost to the customer; thismeans we are helping truck drivers and owners to achieve theirspecific business targets head-on.”Tailored to meet these specific needs, Dunlop’s EconoDrive hasincluded a number of new and upgraded features, including witha new, stiffer Silica/Carbon Black blend specifically designed toreduce rolling resistance and increase mileage.Special features include new construction elements, a four ribtread design for wet conditions and a redeveloped compound. The EconoDrive includes the introduction of an optimized ply lineand sidewall gauge, combined with high ply turn-up, which allowsfor less heat generation creating lower rolling resistance. Eachbelt end includes an optimized topping which further ensuresless heat generation, again delivering a better roll.As dedicated technicians, Dunlop engineers have focused notonly on better fuel efficiency but on a tyre that delivers acomfortable drive. Specific features include an enhancedconstruction under the tread to provide uniform pressuredistribution. A flat belt construction allows for squarer footprintand therefore more contact on shoulder providing betterhandling. Additionally, the thicker sidewall gauge helps to protectagainst curb damage. To help with aquaplaning and other wet road conditions, acenterline circumferential groove enables the tyre to effectivelyabsorb water, while lateral grooves allow for an efficient waterevacuation towards the outside.Reflecting on the EconoDrive, Sanjay Khanna comments, “Wehave gone through great lengths to develop a tyre whichdelivers on cost of ownership.“A significant amount of effort has gone into the developmenta state-of-the-art tyre for light trucks and vans which deliverson fuel efficiencies. To achieve this we did not onlyconcentrate on improving in one area, we literally pushed theboundaries to do so across the board.”Sanjay concluded: “When developing this tyre we wanted tomeet as many of the needs indicated to us by light truckdrivers, and today we deliver a tyre that meets those needs.”Michelin’s range of 17.5-inch multi-purpose tyres has beendesigned for small and medium size commercial vehicles platedbetween 6 and 12 tonnes, and are particularly suitable for vehiclesdriving on a mixture of motorways, A-roads and city streets.Compared with the previous Michelin range they replaced, thelatest generation of multi-purpose light truck tyres offer up to 20per cent extra mileage for drive axle tyres and up to 10 per centfor steer tyres. In addition, the tyres deliver improved grip andgreater wear resistance, making them both safer and moreeconomical. The 20 per cent improvement in mileage stems from optimisedtread compounds combined with Michelin’s patented ‘DoubleWave’ sipe tread pattern. The ‘Double Wave’ sipe is three-dimensional, deep and interlockingand its name comes from the fact that it is wavy, both on44Michelin Light Truck Tyre Rangethe surface and underneath. Pressure from the load and from theengine torque causes the horizontal and vertical waves to generatea self-locking effect that limits tread block movement, therebyreducing irregular tread wear and increasing mileage potential. The Michelin XDE 2 has ‘Double Wave’ sipes distributed evenlyacross the tread, improving traction and grip on wet and slipperyroads.Sidewalls on the Michelin XZE 2 and XDE 2 tyres also benefit fromthree rubber ribs to help protect the casing and improve damageresistance. These reinforcements reduce tyre scrub and abrasiondamage from kerbs, thereby increasing mileage and improvingretreadability.Light truck fleets operating vehicles over longer distances, wherethe majority of the journeys take place on motorways and trunkroads, can specify 215/75 R17.5-inch tyres from Michelin’s XZA 2Energy range. These tyres are specially designed to offer evenwear, increased longevity and fuel savings on long range missions. They also feature additional sipes to guard against tramline wear– a common problem on motorway operationsAccurate Vehicle & Tyre Data Drives Everything We Do - www.carwebuk.com
