A WORD FROM THE HAFFSenior Coach Chris MehaffeyROUND 1We went into the first match against an expected strong Modbury side that had come 3 rd in Division 2 in 2007, PremiersD2 in 2008 and unluckily been relegated from D1 after winning 6 games in 2010.We are without Charles Brice for 3 weeks and Alex Jarvis for 4, both who are on holidays. Fraser Pinkney is out for 1or 2 and Michael Fischer for around 4 both still recovering from long term injuries from last year. Dan Miller is still 2away with a hamstring, but despite all this we went into the game giving ourselves a good chance. We welcomed new players playing their 1 st A Grade games in Jake Brennan, Alex Holbrook and Henry Nicholson allyoung men with huge potential. We had worked hard off-season in further developing the style of football we want to play that will prove to be veryexciting as the year unfolds. We really wanted the players to concentrate on our style.Modbury were as expected very physical, quick, well drilled and skilled and certainly provided an up tempo style ofgame from what we were used to. We lost no. 1 rover Sam Franklin in the first few minutes of the match that effectedour rotations greatly as the day wore on.For the 1 st 3 quarters we were able to match it with Modbury to trail by 10 points at 3 quarter time still right in thegame. The game seesawed as neither of us could get a break on the opposition. We perhaps wasted many entries intoour forward line and errors cost us 6 goals for the game generated by pressure from the opposition and a little anxietyas players adjusted to the physical in close game.Although fitter than we have been for many seasons it was interesting the number of our players who started to crampwhich to me summarised the pressure and intensity of the game that we were not used to. Modbury will be a top 2 or 3side so they have set the benchmark early for us to know what level we must rise to in order to have the year we allbelieve we can It is imperative that the players trust each other, believe in each other and stick to what we believe willbe a successful style of football.Unfortunately in the last qtr with rotations “gone” we made numerous errors, the work effort dropped a little causingnumerous skill errors and we were beaten soundly in the last quarter with Modbury adding 6 goals to our 1.

A WORD FROM THE HAFFSenior Coach Chris MehaffeyOur better players for the day were captain Sam Fritsch in the midfield, “runners” Ben Way, Alex Holbrook and ShaneBracegirdle, backman Ben Hill-Ling showing us he is getting back to his very best of a couple of years ago and tirelessruckmen Anthony Lewis and Will Madsen. There were some of the best signs seen at the Club for some time and continued training of our style of play will see usgo from strength to strength. The players can be happy in the fact that they did their best to produce what we are tryingto establish and 2010 will be an exciting time for the Club.We front Flinders Park next week in a very important game for us to get on the board and further players from the BGrade will get opportunity this week with Will Paley overseas for 7 weeks, Sam Franklin with a shoulder issue out for5 weeks and Charles Canny away for 1 week. Our depth will be tested but we have sufficient players in form and with the correct attitudes on the day very capable ofwinning the game.Hope to see many supporters down at Flinders Park on Saturday.Chris Mehaffey

Carey still the King: BrownBy Jim MortonLions kingpin Jonathan Brown is humbled by the comparisons, but doesn't believe he holds a candle to his childhoodidol Wayne Carey.Brown, enjoying his best-ever start to an AFL season with 17 goals in Brisbane's three wins, also expects teammateBrendan Fevola to tip him out for another Coleman Medal. The Brisbane centre half-forward's brilliant early-season form, along with that ofNick Riewoldt up until his hamstring injury, has seen the pair inevitably compared toNorth Melbourne great Carey.Carey himself this week rated Brown, who plays 9kg heavier than the former Kangarooat 105kg, the best and most influential spearhead in the game. But the Brisbane captain on Wednesday felt the two-time premiership-winning skipperCarey remained the best he had seen."Comparisons are for when you finish your playing career I believe," he said."That's obviously a compliment but Carey was certainly an idol of mine and I don'tthink I'd come close to him, that's my opinion.AAPIn which decade of the 20th century did an Australianfirst swim the English Channel? This was definitely achieved. TheKings have a influx of talent on and off the field but the passion from therookies was a stand out. The day saw Henry ‘Mantis’ Nicholson downed halfa onion and a Praying Mantis, all in the name of raising money for the club.A moment that was definitely held in high respects as the teary recruit finishedthe onion and bellowed ‘it’s all for the club’.Akshay ‘Ashytray’ Caplash is another ‘shoe in’ with the up andcoming talent, there are high expectations of his capabilities.Spirits are high within the group as the photos will show.
