Multicultural<strong>education</strong> recognizes and supportsdifferent perceptions of the universe asequally valid; enables teachers to clarifytheir values and perceive their attitudesand stereotypes about other groups ofpeople; and develops respect for linguisticand cultural differences.LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY INTERVIEW (LPI)Students already holding teachercertification who are pursuing eitherbilingual/bicultural teacher certificationor English as a second language (ESL)certification must pass the LPI to be eligiblefor these certifications. Studentspursuing initial teacher certification inESL must pass the LPI prior to being allowedto student teach.The LPI is an oral exam which testsan individual’s ability to communicatein English (for English as a second languageteacher certification) and in bothEnglish and the individual’s native language(for bilingual/bicultural teachercertification). Societalinfluences other than the classroom (i.e.,parents, television, and mass media) arealso analyzed. Studentsevaluate, adapt, and write materialsfor ESL classes.MCC 627 Historical & CulturalBackground of Limited EnglishProficient Students (3)This course examines the acculturationof language minority students inAmerican schools. Topics include: socializationand discourse practices thatcontribute to the variety of cognitivestyles of ethnolinguistic and bilingualstudents; the psychological and socialfactors that facilitate development of orinhibit their self-image, as well as theability to function within a culturally diversesociety; the relationships betweenbilingualism and intelligence, socioeconomicfactors and psycholinguistic processesthat affect ways in which childrendevelop literacy skills; psychologicaland pedagogical consequences ofschooling, including bilingual programs,immersion, and submersionstrategies; the concepts of “space” and“time” as being culturally imbeddedand their relevance to the bilingual <strong>education</strong>alsetting; and the role of assessmentin bilingual schooling.MCC 628 Approaches to TeachingEnglish Writing Skills to ESLand Bilingual Students (3)The goal of this course is to provideESL and bilingual teachers or teachersin-trainingwith the knowledge, experience,and skills needed to assess studentwriting, develop appropriate writing assignmentsand teaching techniques, anduse new technologies (e-mail, the Web,CD-ROMs, etc.) to teach writing. Thecourse will also explore research onwriting and attitudes toward writing.63


GRADUATE CATALOG 2002–2004MCC 650 Research in Urban Education:ESL/Bilingual Tracks (3)This course introduces students todifferent research techniques so as toallow them to work on topics relevantto the fields of bilingual/<strong>multicultural</strong><strong>education</strong> and the teaching of Englishas a second language.MCC 655 Methods of Teaching ESL (3)Students observe, practice, and developpractical techniques for teachinglistening, speaking, reading, and writingskills to learners of English as a secondlanguage. Students conduct peer teachingand demonstrate various methodologies.Emphasis is on classroom management,testing, and developing creativematerials that foster communication.MCC 660 Internship in ESL (5)This internship is a full-semesterfield experience in a school with a recognizedESL and/or bilingual program.Students are assigned to work with a cooperatingteacher certified in their fieldof specialization. They observe, tutor,and then teach children, under the supervisionof the cooperating teacher. Internsassume the full responsibilities ofa classroom teacher during the course ofthe semester and are responsible for inclassand out-of-class activities normallyassigned to teachers.MCC 661 Internship Seminar (1)Students attend this weekly seminarto share, analyze, and evaluate their studentteaching experiences. They helpfind solutions to problems faced bythemselves and others.64
