OUR PROVINCIAL SPEAKS…
Ever since I was installed as the Provincial of
Jaffna, on the 21 st of May, 2008, the political
situation has become a complex reality in our
region. The thirty- year war is now over (?) but
the complexity continues unabated. The
destruction and loss caused to the resources of
the country and to the whole population are
immense and irreparable. There still continues
among the Tamil population a fear- psychosis, a
sense of hopelessness, loss, shame, humiliation
and uncertainty about their present and future.
Even in this uncertain and painful moment, it is
consoling that the members of the Province
allow these realities to unfold into a new form
of being Oblate Missionaries to address the
emerging new ministries. Their commitment to
serve the refugees in the IDP Camps, the
displaced, the socially and mentally affected
victims, to be with the sick and wounded in the
hospitals is commendable. There are challenges
and hurdles but we go forward trusting in the
Lord.
During the time spent as the Provincial Leader,
I tried my best to address the following four areas;
namely a) Emphasis on personal and collective
renewal supported by strategies indicated and
accepted in the Immense Hope Project of the
Province b) Importance of the visitation of the
Provincial leader to the members c) the present
political realities be allowed to unfold into new
way of being Oblates to respond to the signs of
the times d) To become open to issues relating
to Justice and Peace and to foster peace, and
Harmony among all citizens.
My grateful thanks go to all the members for
their support and collaboration in our collective
efforts to reorganize our disturbed ministries in
a new environment. This is not easy at all to be
rooted in one place when you are uprooted and
thrown out several times.
With our own limitations and failures,let us
continue everything with a positive mind for the
sake of our flock, “My sheep hear my voice, and
I know them, and they follow me. And I give them
eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither
shall anyone snatch them out of my hand”, ( Jn.
10/ 27-28).

HEART-ACHING EXPERIENCE
The untimely demise of Rev. Fr.Philippiah
Jesunesan Omi is an irreparable loss to the
Province. He was a much loved and sought after
human person and Oblate. With outstanding
human values and with a pleasant face and
approach he simply drew the attention of many.
This was evident by the presence of the large
gathering that thronged at his funeral services
at St.Mary’s Cathedral, Jaffna on the 17 th of
August. At the time of his death he was one of
the Provincial Councillors, the Secretary of the
provincial Council, the Superior of De Mazenod
Scholasticate, the Chairman of the formation
committee and the supervisor of the Center for
Peace and Reconciliation (CPR). It is remarkable
that he served as the General Councillor for Asia
–Oceania.
Undoubtedly his passing away has
created a deep void in our hearts and of course
in our Province at large. He was gradually
beginning to bring new life to us with his varied
experiences gained globally but God had his own
plans for Fr.Jesu. We, who are like fragile clay
pots, can do nothing but to accept the
impermanence of human power and to believe
only in the power of God, “For a thousand years
in your sight are like yesterday when it is past,
and like a watch in the night. You carry them
away like a flood; they are like a sleep. In the
morning they are like grass which grows up; in
the morning it flourishes and grows up; in the
evening it is cut down and withers” (Ps: 90/4-6).
Jesu has kept the life span of seventy years. As
there are others too who reflect on his death, I
salute our dear friend Jesu with the words, “Well
done, good and faithful servant; you were
faithful over a few things, I will make you a ruler
over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord”
(Mt:25/21). May He rest in peace.

The Oblates of the Jaffna Province gathered
together in Mannar and Jaffna for the annual
renewal programme. It was planned ahead by
the Provincial administration and accomplished
very successfully. The first two weeks of August
2009 ( 3 rd – 14 th ) were grace-filled days to the
province of Jaffna. Twenty five Oblates and
fifteen Scholastics came together at
“Gnanodhayam”, the Oblate Center for religious
Studies in Mannar, and twenty-two Oblates and
thirteen Scholastics came together at
Thodarpaham, Jaffna for this renewal
Programmme. The animators were our dear
Oblates from India Anthony Jeevaratnam and
Francis Xavier. They did an excellent job fulfilling
our expectations.
The theme they chose was “Personal and
collective renewal”. They developed the themes
under three areas namely: a)personal Identitywho
am I as a Person-as an Oblate;
b)Community- my relationship to the community
and c) the Oblate Mission in the present context.
These reflections were treated by the animators
with in- cooperated realities experienced by the
Tamil community in the aftermath of the thirty
year war. The participants were actively and
keenly immersed in all the workshops, group
sharing and in listening to one another. It was a
forum to identify the areas of concern in our
personal and community living, to learn to accept
our own vulnerability and to prayerfully address
them to heal our wounds and our prejudiced
minds towards the others. The participants
expressed great satisfaction in the manner they
were treated in prayer and with meditation
techniques bringing new immense Hope to our
personal life. The animators did a good job and

we hope to have such animation programme in
future as well. We are also aware that there is
still much need in our Province for continued
spiritual renewal and for active participation
from the part of the members. There is also need
to integrate both ministry and lives in our
personal witnessing. Sometimes we are
absorbed in our different ministries to the extent
of forgetting our personal lives and witnessing. I
was able to know myself and my limitations
through our open interaction we had in the
common forum. Let us continue this spirit of
being supportive and standing for one another.
Our sincere appreciation and gratitude are due
to the Oblate animators from India for their
painstaking efforts to do their best and
particularly to Fr.Francis Nallapan OMI, the
Delgation Superior for sending them here.
Provincial’s Visit
The whole month of April 2009, I visited our
Oblate members working in Europe. Fathers
Linus and Amalathas(Paris), Anpurasa (Lourdes)
Ratnaraja (Rome), Alrin (Denmark) and
Inpanathan (Norway) were visited by me.
I was with them listening and encouraging.
We were able to regularize certain contracts and
some need more time and discernment. I was
very happy to meet with the Bishop of Denmark
who so nicely welcomed me and hosted me
with a sumptuous lunch. He helped us with
some mass stipends for which we are very
grateful. I can never forget the oblate
Community in Denmark under the leadership
of Fr. Paulmarx Omi. It was really an oblate home

for me. I enjoyed their oblate hospitality during
my stay there. They paid my air ticket from Paris
- Denmark - Norway - Paris. I am very grateful to
them. Most importantly the Jaffna Province
remains indebted to the Oblate Community in
Denmark for their generous support and
assistance to the Province. We greatly value their
generosity. My sincere thanks to all of you dear
Alrin, Ratna, Linus, Amal, Anpu and Inpa for
Four of our members are working to
promote Peace through education, NVC
programmes, seminars and other orientation
Programmes. This ministry is being looked upon
with suspicion by certain sector of people.
Justice and Peace Initiatives
We have to carefully continue this
ministry. Besides this, both the Provinces of
Jaffna and Colombo are involved in the initial
phase of Peace-Building Programmes initiated
by the general Administration and supported by
Misereor.

A VERY BIG “THANK” TO YOU ALL
Dear Rev. Fathers and Sisters,
welcoming me to your places and for your love
and concern extended. It is my responsibility to
visit you now and then, which I hope to do. In
the meantime I wish you all the best in your
places. Take care of your health please and
continue to pray for one another.
I visited Fr. Alfred who was recently released
from the IDP camp and presently stationed at
Gnanodhayam, Mannar and Fr. Reginald who is
still kept at the Ananthakumaraswami - IDP camp.
Words are insufficient to express our gratitude to you all
for the valuable and timely assistance that you so generously
rendered to Fr. Jesunesan omi during his stay at the National
Hospital, Borella and at the Home for the Elders of the Little
Sisters of the Poor.
We, the Oblates of the Jaffna Province, are in a special
way very grateful and indebted to Frs. Clement
Waidiyasekara omi, Srian Ranasinghe omi, Noel Dias,
Dileepa Jayamaha omi, Kelum Dias omi, Basti omi, Bros.
Lebourn and Patrick Prasanth for all the assistance rendered.
Our deep sentiments of gratitude are due to the Little
Sisters of the Poor at Darly Road, Maradana, for their
indefatigable service to Fr. Jesu. Their personal care and
concern for him are commendable. Dear sisters, we really
value your services. We thank the Doctors, Nurses and
Attendants of the National Hospital and all those who helped
us in various ways.
You all showed your love and solidarity, as children of God.

REMEMBERING FR. JESUNESAN Omi
I venture to recall a few sacred memories of
Rev. Fr. Philippaia Jesunesan, OMI, whom we call
affectionately Fr. Jesu.
It is with profound sorrow, sympathy, love and
affection, I record the demise of Fr. Jesunesan.
Of the nine children, six boys and three girls, he
was the last gift of God to his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Caitampillai Philippaia and Gnannamma
Annamma. He was born on September 19 th , 1939
in Puloli, Point Pedro. He was, indeed, a special
blessing of God to his family. Being the youngest
in the family, he was the butt of special affection
and love of all in the family. He was born in a
God-fearing family, where a sure foundation was
laid for his future vocation for religious and
priestly life.
Fr. Jesus had his primary and secondary
education at St. Patrick’s College, Jaffna, where
he already had a solid and sound foundation
under the guidance of the Oblate Fathers.
Thereafter, he joined the Oblate Juniorate at
Kohuwela, Nugegoda to study Latin language,
and proceeded to the Novitiate in Bandarawela.
He made his first religious profession on August
15 th , 1959. Then he joined the Oblate
scholasticate, Ampitiya, Kandy and did his
philosophical and theological studies at the
National Seminary, Ampitiya. He was ordained a
priest of God at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Jaffna, on
December 21 st , 1965, by his Lordship bishop
Jerome Emilianuspillai, Omi.
Fr. Jesu possessed many excellent qualities.
He had inherited a faith built on the faithfulness
of his parents. His was a cause, worth committing
himself to. With single mindedness and
simplicity of life style, he, being not encumbered
with inessentials, was able to measure up to the
demands of a true disciple of Christ.
He engaged himself in several ministries,
especially preaching, teaching, formation,
spiritual guidance
and parish. The
authorities, recognizing
in him his
capabilities, commi
tted him to the
preaching ministry
as his first assign
ment. He excelled
in this ministry so
well that he even joined a group of senior Oblate
preacher to conduct a grand mission in India.
Young Fr. Jesu was not second to none in this
ministry. He was not at all a budding preacher,
but already a preacher par excellence, admired
by one and all. He could keep his hearers, young
and old, spell bound by his humorous and witty
expressions, yet, opening their hearts to truth.
In fact, later on he was assigned to work in India
as a missionary for a few years.
In the field of education, he exhibited his
talents, especially during the period he held
office as the Vice Rector of St. Patrick’s College,
Jaffna. His teaching was always lively and
enlivening, and brought light into others’ lives.
He disciplined the students with love, corrected
them wisely and understood each of the students
in his uniqueness. He knew how to prod the
hesitant, curb the rash ones, and never quench
their love for life. He also knew how much to
demand and what to overlook. He affirmed their
worth, their life’s beauty and their gifts. He
handled them understandingly and not feel put
out when a youth acted out.
In his formation ministry he was a person who
expressed willingness to have dialogue with
everyone. His concerns for others went beyond
the parameters of the institution, so to say,
always directed to the welfare of the formandi.
Every moment was precious to him in the
presence of God. He had a set time-table for each

of his duties through proper education and stern
discipline. Above all, he had to set an exemplary
example and great sense of dedication in the
discharge of his duties. He is certainly a proud
product of the congregation.
Within two years of tenure of office as the
Provincial of the Jaffna Province, he was elected
to the post of General Councillor for Asia -
Oceania. For full six years he held this post, and
during this period his commendable contribution
to the General Administration towards the
welfare of the congregation was very significant
and magnanimous. On his return to the Province,
he took charge of Amalautpavam, home for
retired priests, in Jaffna. After a year he accepted
the responsibility entrusted to him as the
superior of the Scholasticate at Colombuthurai,
Jaffna, without hesitation.
Fr. Jesu was a man of God who mirrored the
qualities expected of him. He had a care free
heart to see the one great truth, God alone
matters. His prayer life was not seen during
prayer. It was seen in his spontaneous comments
and reactions. He communicated great serenity
and warmth and a good understanding of the
human heart that, no wonder, people of all walks
of life were drawn to confide to this man of God.
He would admit a laugh at his inevitable
mistakes. He had the heart to enjoy the
numberless occasions for laughter, but never in
scorn or the desire to hurt another. He was one
who could feel at home with any one and at any
place. He taught the others the essential things
of life in simple ways. He even believed that the
world could be a better place because of him.
The beautiful memories that Fr. Jesu left behind
will ever remain green in our hearts.
Though Fr. Jesu was crippled with dreaded
illness, he was never overtaken by despair or
disillusion. On the contrary, he remained close
to his master experiencing him as his lifelong
companion. After a brief illness borne patiently
in peace with the crucified Saviour, he passed
away on August 13 th , this year. On the 17 th of
August, after the last funeral services performed
at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Jaffna, presided over by
the Provincial of the Jaffna Province, Very Rev Fr.
Paul Nadchethiram, OMI, amidst a great number
of priests, religious men and women and laity,
the remains of our dear Fr. Jesunesan were
interned in St. Mary’s burial ground, Jaffna.
“We thank you, Lord, for making Fr. Jesunesan
capable of such love. We thank you for the
beauty we have discovered in him,the sparkle
in his eyes, the gesture of tenderness,
the warmth glow of his face,The radiance that
came from within his heart. Tiny though his
life be compared to your splendour, What a
lovely ray it was, and what unspeakable
beauty it has shown us. Having awakened his
heart through life’s tender touch, lead him to
the unending ecstasy for which you created
him.”

Rev. Fr. F. A. Thevaraj Omi was installed
by Very Rev. Fr. Provincial on the First of June
2009, as the Superior of the Preaching Community
at Vavuniya in the presence of many Oblates
from Mannar- Vavunia Districts. With his
experience in the preaching ministry for a long
period and his new knowledge of mass media
communication, Theva will bring new life to the
Preaching Community. The Oblates of the Jaffna
Province heartily congratulate Fr.Theva on his
successful completion of his studies in Manila
with M.A., degree in Mass Media Communication.
All the best Theva.
Rev. Fr. A. Confucious Omi is appointed
the vice Rector of St.Joseph’s Juniorate,
Columbuthurai, and will serve also as the bursar
of the Community. He has already taken up his
residence there. It is to be noted that
Fr.Confucious was working in Mullaitivu at our
Psycho-Social Center, “Amaithy Thendral” with
the Director Fr. Maria Sebastian. We are certain
that Fr.Confucious will give his best to the
formation of the young candidates, and support
Fr. G. Wenceslaus omi, the Rector in all his
endeavors.
Rev. Fr. Eugene Amalraj Omi, who
was ordained on 18.6.2009, is appointed the
assistant Pastor of the Oblate Parish, Happutale.
He will assist Fr.G.Atputharajah OMI. Fr. Amal, we
wish you a pleasant stay at this salubrious station
and a successful ministry. You will do well in your
responsibilities as you begin your first ministry.

Rev. Fr. A. Sylvester Omi, who was
involved very enthusiastically in the Parish of
Haputale as co-pastor, has been appointed
Director of the Oblate Social Service(OSS) of our
Province and is stationed at Vavunia to minister
among the people who became socially and
economically poor and destitute due to 30 year
war. He will also concentrate on the welfare of
the returnees from the Refugee camps. Rev. Frs.
Yogarjah Omi, Meno Basti Omi and Godfrey Joel
Omi will be coordinating the OSS with Fr.Sylvester
for Mannar, Jaffna and Trincomalee respectively.

PLACEMENTS
PLACEMENTS
Rev. Fr. Francis Daniel Omi flew to
London on the 22nd of June 2009, and was
assigned to a Parish in Kilburn. He has to cook
his own meals besides his pastoral
responsibilities. Danie, we are a little sad that
you may not have sufficient time to talk if you
are confined to the Kitchen. Wish you a happy
stay and a successful Ministry over there.
Rev. Fr. A. Emmanuel Omi is continuing
the ministry of teaching to the students of Vanni
at Arunachalam Relief Centre, at Cheddikulam.
He was the Pastor at Amathy Puram, Oblate
Mission in Kilinochchi, and now he has moved
out of Vanni with his people. He is temporarily
residing at Cheddikulam. He also helps the Pastor
of Cheddikulam for Sunday masses. He
conducted a seminar for three months for 50
Catholic students who were preparing to sit the
G C E A/L. examination which was organized by
the Department of Education. Being a
Government teacher, he takes up Mathematics
for the G C E O/L students, English and
Christianity for the G C E A/L students. We are
happy to note that our Oblates move with the
people wherever they go. Best of luck.
Rev. Fr. Meno Basty Jayantha Omi is
appointed the secretary to the Provincial. He will
coordinate also the services of OSS in Jaffna and
the publication of Yazaha-Thoni- our News Letter.
Being a person with various gifts and talents, Basti
will contribute much to the Province. He has
already laid a good foundation for his service.
Well begun is half done but a caution: this is only
your first Obedience.
Rev. Fr. A. Jesurajan Omi is appointed
Chaplain of Vavunia Hospital and the College of
Education. He will take up residence at the
Preaching Community at “Amathi Aham”,
Vavuniya, forming part of the Community. We
are certain that he will do this ministry well with
his knowledge and experience gained in India
through many work-shops.

Rev. Fr. S.J. Francis Omi is appointed
the resident Spiritual Director at De Mazenod
Scholasticate, Columbuthurai. He will assume
this new responsibility from the 1st of October,
2009. Our Scholastics will greatly benefit from
his spiritual wealth. Thank you Father for
accepting this important ministry. We value the
presence of senior Oblates like you in our
Formation Houses.
Rev. Fr. M. Sebamalai Perera Omi is
appointed the Director of our Wholistic Health
Centre (WHC) Jaffna with effect from the 1st of
September, 2009. Presently Fr.Sebamalai is the
hospital Chaplain in Jaffna and the Bursar of the
provincial House. He shoulders this new post as
an additional responsibility. He succeeds Fr.
Soosai Damian OMI.
Rev. Fr. P. Vimalarajan Omi is
appointed the co-vocation promoter of our
Province. He will cover the districts of Mannar,
Vavuniya and Trincomalee. Vimal can catch lot of
youngsters when he moves about in different
Parishes to preach the Word of God. Vimal, we
are sure that you will make use of the opportunity
well.
THE VISIT OF MOST REV. FATHER SUPERIOR GENERAL
Fr. General will be arriving in Sri Lanka on 30.12.2009.
His presence in our Province is scheduled from the 12 th
of December, 2009. He will preach the annual retreat
for the Oblates of the Province of Jaffna from the 14 th
of Dec, 2009, at Sangamam, Kopay, Jaffna.

The Visit of Most Rev. Fr. Superior General:
Our Superior General Most Rev. Father
Wilhelm Steckling Omi will be visiting our
Province and will be with us from the 12th to the
23rd December, 2009. He will preach the Annual
Retreat to the Oblates at Sangamam, Kopay,
Jaffna from the 14th - 18th . His schedule for the
rest of the days will be notified to you later.
The Provincial Council that met on
16.08.2009 appointed Rev. Frs. F.L.N. Croos
(Chairman), S. Damian, P. Mahesan, S. Peter,
J. Beshman and M. Basti as members of the
Organizing Committee for the visit of Fr. General.
Rev. Fr. Eugene Benedict Omi, after having
served as the Director of JRS in Trincomalee, left
for Rome to pursue his post graduate studies on
Family and Marriage. The Province whishes him
a pleasant stay at the Oblate General House and
a successful study programme. Come out with
flying colours.
Rev. Fr. A. Linus Soysa Omi took up the
responsibility as the Chaplain of the Tamil
Catholic Communiy in France on 22nd August,
2009. He was in Paris studying French almost for
one year prior to his assuming the Chaplaincy.
With his knowledge and experience as a senior
Oblate, he will serve well our people over there.
The province wishes him a fruitful ministry.
Rev. Fr. S. Philips Omi, left for USA on
26.04. 2009 to be with his family members and
returned to the Province on 11.07.2009. In his
absence Rev. Fr. C.s. Croos omi, took charge of
the Shrine of our Lady of Good Voyage, Chaddy.
Stan, be careful of your weight, we are really
concerned about you.
Rev. Fr. P. Benignus Omi, being the
Director of Anpaham, is busy organizing the
return of our orphans. Presently he is building
some sheds, study hall and other residential
facilities to our orphan children in Mannar. He is
also visiting the internally displaced people in
the camps and helps our Oblates in their social
assistance.

News and Views
Rev. Fr. A. Jeevendra Paul Omi, the Grant
Director of the Missionary Oblates of Mary
Immaculate, Rome, was in Sri Lanka during the
month of May. He visited the internally displaced
people in the camps both in Jaffna and Vavuniya.
Along with Fr. Provincial, he held meetings with
the Oblates in Jaffna and Vavuniya and expressed
his support and collaboration in our efforts to
provide immediate relief to the refugees and the
internally displaced people.
WELCOME BACK Fr. AMAL
Rev. Fr. Arulraj Amalathas Omi has
returned to the Province after serving for six years
in France as the Chaplain to the Tamil Catholics
in France. Fr. Amal has done a wonderful job in
France and has won the great admiration of the
people. Fr Amal! While congratulating you for
your excellent service to the people in France
and for your love for the Province, we wish you
well in your new ministry, as the Director of
Sangamam at Kopay. Well done Fr. Amal
Mission Superior of South Korea:
Rev. Fr. S. James Jeyachandran Omi, the
Mission Superior of South Korea, was in Sri Lanka
for a short holiday. He visited his home town,
Urumpirai, and met his friends and relatives. He
returned to the Mission on the 18 th of August,
2009. It was a pleasure to meet him after a long
time. It was unfortunate that we could not spend
quality time with him as we all were busy with
the Renewal Programme.

FORMATION
Our Scholastic Brothers Packianathan Christy Nirmalarajan and
Robert Robinson made their Final Profession of Vows in the Oblate
Congregation, on the 18 th of July at St. Joseph’s Juniorate Chapel,
Columbuthurai in the presence of the Oblates, the Diocesan clergy
and relatives of both candidates. Fr. Provincial officiated at the
liturgical services.
On the following day, both of them were ordained deacons in the
same chapel by His Lordship Rt. Rev.Dr.Thomas Savundaranayagam,
the Bishop of Jaffna. Presently both of them are exercising their
ministry , Bro. Christy with Fr. Alban Rajasingam Omi at
Vanchiyankulam and Bro. Robinson with Fr. Vincent Patrick Omi
at Center for rehabilitation of Alcoholic and Drug Addicts (CRADA)
in the diocese of Mannar. We wish them a successful pastoral
ministry under our senior Oblates.
JOINT PREPARATION FOR
FINAL COMMITMENT
Scholastic Brothers from Colombo and Jaffna
Provinces, together with the Scholastics from
Pakistan Delegation, began a one-month joint
preparation in view of perpetual vows at the Pre-
Novitiate at Maggona on the 25 th August, 2009.
There are eleven scholastics from our Province
participating. Fr.Emmanuel Fernando Omi is
coordinating the Programme. Our Provincial
Superior Fr.M.Paul Nadchethiram Omi also took
two lectures for the scholastics. They will be at
Maggona till the 25 th of September. It is a Godgiven
opportunity for our scholastics to have an
intense preparation with deep prayer and
reflection.
RENEWAL OF VOWS

FIRST VOWS
Five Novices from the Province of Jaffna, Bros.
K. Bede Sujaharan, S. J. Surenthiraraj, A.X.
Amalaraj, F. Srikanth and A. Siyanstan Jenis made
their first profession of Vows on the 22 nd of
August , at Sacred Heart Novitiate, Banadarawela.
The Provincials of Colombo and Jaffna received
the vows of their respective candidates. Rt. Rev.
Dr. Ponniah Joseph, the auxiliary Bishop of Trinco-
Batti presided over the Eucharist. There were
present a number of Oblates, religious and
relatives of the Novices. Though the climate
turned unfavourable, the ceremony went on
well. Congratulations brothers! They will
proceed to the Oblate Scholasticate, Ampitya to
pursue their philosophical studies at the National
Seminary.

OUR NOVICES
Four pre-Novices from our Province, namely.
Thires Puspam Jenistan benedict, Santhiogu
Vincent Michael, Vethanayagam Anucious and
German Brighten Fernando were initiated into
the Novitiate Programme on the 21 st of August,
at the Novitiate, Bandarawela by Fr.Clement
Waidiyasekara Omi, the Provincial Superior of
Colombo Province. Our Provincial too was
present on the occasion. They were well
prepared by Fr.Jerome Lambert Omi, the Director
of the Pre-Novitiate. Thank you Jerome for your
close accompaniment with them.
All the six students, Thomas Marious Croos,
Santhiyapillai Santhirathas, S. Jesuratnam
Jeevaratnam, Rasathurai Vimal Raj, Canijude
Benet Singer and Xavier Justin Rajah.who sat the
English Entrance Examination of the National
Seminary, Kandy, from our Oblate Juniorate,
passed successfully. They will be moving to
Gnanodayam, Mannar after a month holiday to
St. Joseph’s Juniorate
prepare themselves to enter the pre-Novitiate.
Fr. G. Wenceslaus Omi, the Director of the
Juniorate is very proud of their (his)
achievements. He toiled hard to make them
learn the English Language. Congratulations
boys and the Rector. If you have any confusion
in future, you can consult Fr. Confucious Omi,
who is fresh on the staff.
The Death of Another Son of De Mazenod
The Oblates of the Jaffna Province have experienced
another irreparable loss by the death of Rev. Fr. Mariampillai,
Pavilupillai OMI. Fr. Pavilupillai was born on the 19 th of
October, 1921 at Sillalai, Jaffna. He pronounced his first
profession of religious vows on the 08 th of September, 1946
and made his final profession on the 08 th of September, 1949.
He was ordained a priest on the 06 th of July, 1952 in Rome. He
served the Lord and His people in various capacities. Fr. Pavi
breatehed his last on the 08 th of September, 2009. The funeral
services took place on the 10 th of September, 2009, at St
Mary’s Cathedral Jaffna, and his mortal remains were
interned in St. Mary’s burial ground, Jaffna.

Mission and Ministry
Rev. Fr. A.V. Alfred Omi, who was at Zone
04 Relief Centre at Cheddikulam, Vavuniya,
taking care of the children of Anapham, was
released on the 25th of August. He is at
“Gnanodhayam” (Oblate Center for Religious
Studies) in Mannar. He continues his teaching
ministry temporarily at Pesalai, Mannar, while
visiting our Children now and then. He is
teaching science to the GCE O/ L students, and
English and Christianity to the students of GCE
A/L . The province owes him a lot as he remained
till the end with the children and brought them
out safe. His heart must be still with the children
but he needs some rest and recuperation. Well
done Allu. You are soft but strong. Relax.
Rev. Fr. S. E. Reginald Omi is still stationed
at the Anandakumaraswami Relief Centre at
Cheddikulam. We expected his release with the
other Priests but was postponed. We hope and
pray that Fr.Regie comes out soon and joins us.
He is a little relaxed as he is with his parents.
Regie, we are with you, concerned about you and
praying for you incessantly.
The Emergency Relief for the I.D.P in Sahanagama
Welfare Centre Pulmoddai, Trincomalee
Nearly 1500 internally displaced families are
stationed at the Sahanagama Welfare Centre, at
Pulmoddai, Trincomalee. It is 80 miles away from
our Oblate House. Fathers Antony Poncian,
Godfrey Joel and myself were able to reach the
centre with much difficulty to assist the people. Prior
permission had to be obtained from the Local Civil
Authorities to visit as well as to assist the same
with cooked food and milk-food and other essential
items. We, as Oblates, were able to be present
among the suffering people and help them in every
way possible.
Fr. C. S. Croos Omi, in the absence of
Fr. S. Philips OMI, took charge of the Shrine of
Our Lady of Good Voyage, Chaddy, and Jaffna
and continued the regular services at the Shrine
while enthusiastically organized the feasts of St.
Philip Neri’s Church and St. Mary’s Church at
Allaipiddy. He also preached to the Jaffna
denary Fathers for the monthly day of recollection
that was held at the Bishop’s House,
Jaffna. Fr. Stan Philips OMI may have to undo so
many things.
Narrow Escape
Rev. Fr. S.M. Sebastian Omi and Bro.
Amirtharaj Daberera Omi met with an
accident on the Mannar-Vavuniya road while
returning after visiting the IDP camps. Bro. Amir
sustained a fracture in his leg while Fr.Seba had a
big wound and minor injuries. Thank God they
are fine now though Amir took many days for
treatment at Vavuniya hospital. The motor cycle
is repaired now and is being used by Fr.Seba. Be
careful when you go behind long vehicles.

Rev. Fr. P. Mahesan Omi , the Director of CPR
with the help of a few NGOs conducted seminars
to 45 pre-school teachers on various topics
related to Peace, Justice and Non-Violent
Communication at schools for three months.
The certificate awarding ceremony took place
on the 21st of July 2009 with cultural programmes.
Psycho-socio-spiritual Renewal Programme
at Thalvupadu, Mannar
Preparative work was initiated by visiting
houses at random for one month prior to the actual
programme. Antagonism towards us and our
work, particularly from those seriously addicted
ones, was expressed resentfully against renewal.
We also observed that there was lack of unity
between some of the egocentric youths and the
public. This sort of anti-feeling was expressed by
nearly 4% of the population at Thalvupadu, while
36% remained passive and 50% of the people
expressed their desire to help us in this project.

15.08.2009 - 30.08.2009
A net work was created having the core group
consisting of Rev. Fr. Stephen the Parish Priest,
some active members from the Parish Council, a
few Catholic Youth Union members and the key
members of the community-based-organizations.
The creative participation of the Parish Priest was
highly appreciated. This consistent support made
a great impact on the smooth implementation of
the said project. Group meetings were organized

from the NGOs, honored the programme by his
presence. The participating teachers were very
grateful to CPR for the very relevant and useful
topics treated and requested the CPR to conduct
such seminars in all schools. Fr. Praveen is to be
commended for the excellent organization.
for the planning of the project. A systematic plan
of action was made.
In project proper, all the houses were visited,
totalling 480 families. Eight psycho-social helpers
visited the houses and filled up the forms. Then
Rev. Fr. Leon, Rev.Fr. Beno Omi , Rev. Fr.
Yogaraj Omi, Rev. Fr. Jesurajan Omi and 4 Oblate
Brothers blessed all the houses. 114 men have
been found addicted to alcoholism. The people
were open in exposing their problems particularly
related to addiction. We were able to identify the
addicts with the support given by their wives and
children. The courageous attitude of the wives and
children towards identifying the addicts is
remarkable. On the part of the addicts, their
readiness to give up addiction was positive. Our
frequent visits to the affected families were taken
up well by the families concerned. Our visits late
at night were welcomed without any remorse.
Shifting of the toddy tavern far away from
the public:
A meeting was held under the leadership of the
Parish Priest for the tavern owners and village
leaders. Consequently in that meeting, the following
decisions were made:
I. Shifting of the toddy tavern far away from
the public;

II. Reduction of selling hours to one hour in
the morning and two hours in the evening.
Awareness programmes to parents, students,
youth, and village leaders were organized at group
level. Non-violent communication, life skills, and
strategy to overcome addiction were some of the
topics covered during the session.
The special feature of this event is the successful
accomplishment of the residential addiction
treatment camp. 29 Beneficiaries came forward
voluntarily for this treatment camp.
Medical treatment was attended by medical
officers from Mannar Hospital.
Dr. Ganeshan, a well-known psychiatrist came
from Colombo as a special resource person. He
highly appreciated this venture emphasizing on the
positive outcome of this project.
Individual counselling, family counselling, group
counselling, meditation, street dramas entertainment
programmes and documentary film shows were
some of the special features that highlighted this
project.
Eucharistic rally was arranged on
29.08.2009:
The whole village was joyously involved in the
preparation for this gracious occasion. Rev. Fr.
Rockson, Rev. Bro. Robinson Omi and Rev.Fr.
Jerome Lambert Omi were the preachers. The final
blessing was given by Very Rev Fr. Victor Sosai,
the Vicar General.
Thanksgiving concelebrated Mass was
presided over by Rev. Fr. Xavior cross, the former
Vicar General. Rev. Fr. Vincent Patrick Omi
preached the homily at which he reiterated the
principles for happy life without alcohol.
Finally a cultural programme from 6.45 pm to
10.15 pm was held. The whole village attended
this programme. Drama competition, dances,
meaningful songs, and action demonstrations were
staged, motivating the public for a new life without
social evils.
Our team consisted of eight trained psycho
social helpers, four Oblate Priests, four Oblate
brothers, and three psychiatric workers from
Mental Health Unit, Mannar hospital.
Plan for sustainability:
* Daily follow up programme for the beneficiaries
from 5.00 pm to 8.00 p.m.
* Monthly gathering on the last sunday of every
month.
* Strengthening youths through residential three
day awareness programme in September.
* Strengthening women through residential three
day awareness programme in October.
* Monthly cultural programme emphasizing
positive outlook on life.

The Jubilarians of the Year - 2009
Silver Jubilee of Religious Life
Rev. Fr. Edmund Reginald Omi celebrated the Silver
Jubilee of his Religious Life on the 8 th of September, 2009.
It is very unfortunate that he still stays at the
Ananthakumaraswami – IDP camp at Cheddikulam with
his parents. He was lovingly remembered and prayed for
during the mass on the 8 th of September, the day of his
Oblation. Dear Fr. Regie we assure you that we are taking
all the necessary steps to take you out as early as possible.

Dear Jubilarians we congratulate and wish you many
more years of fruitful service in the vineyard of the
Lord.
The Jubilee of these Oblates will be celebrated in December at the
conclusion of the Retreat.

Fifty years as Oblate Religious
Rev. Frs. Celestine Soosaithasan Croos Omi, S.M.
Selvaratnam Omi, Stanislaus Philips Omi and P. Jesunesan Omi
completed fifty years of religious life on the 15 th of August,
2009. They made their first profession of vows as Oblates on
the 15 th of August ,1959. We the members of the Jaffna
Province join them in thanking God for the gift of religious life
that God has generously blessed them with.
Silver Jubilee of Priesthood
Rev. Fr. Victor Jeyasingham Omi celebrated the Silver
Jubilee of his Priesthood on the 2 nd of May. He was ordained
a Priest of God on the 2 nd of May, 1984 in Jaffna . At present
Fr. Jeyasingham is serving the Tamils at Plermo, Italy. Dear
Fr. Jeya, we wish you well and pray that God may bless you
with many more fruitful years of service in his vineyard.
