Mr Tello Motloung, SRCPresident <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Qwaqwa Campus, waselected <strong>the</strong> first CSRC President.New SRC constitution formain campusIn <strong>the</strong> wake <strong>of</strong> calls by some student formations,<strong>the</strong> Council approved anamendment to <strong>the</strong> SRC constitution for<strong>the</strong> Main Campus to allow for <strong>the</strong> introduction<strong>of</strong> proportional representationalongside a first-past-<strong>the</strong>-post electoralsystem.The new Main Campus SRC constitutionwas <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> consensusreached during a lengthy negotiationprocess involving diverse student formationssuch as Sasco, <strong>the</strong> ANC YouthLeague, <strong>the</strong> Young Communist League,<strong>the</strong> ACDP, Here XVII, KovsieAlliance, aswell as <strong>the</strong> democratically elected SRCmembers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Main Campus. Independentexperts facilitated <strong>the</strong> negotiationprocess. This constituted a legitimatebasis for <strong>the</strong> democratic participation <strong>of</strong>all students on <strong>the</strong> Main Campus in <strong>the</strong>governance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> university.In terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> amendments to <strong>the</strong>Main Campus SRC constitution, nine <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> 18 SRC members will be elected bymeans <strong>of</strong> proportional representation,and nine on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> a direct, firstpast-<strong>the</strong>-postelection.The following portfolios <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> maincampus SRC have since been contestedby individual candidates on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong>“first past <strong>the</strong> post”: president, secretary,academic affairs, legal and constitutionalaffairs, student development, arts andculture, men’s internal liaison, ladies’internal liaison, media, marketing andliaison. The o<strong>the</strong>r nine portfolios werecontested by affiliated organisations on aproportional representation basis. Theseare <strong>the</strong> two vice-presidents, treasurer,dialogue and associations, transformation,campus affairs and recreation,sport, international affairs, and communityservice.62
